THE VALUE OF A BRAND

WHAT IS A BRAND BOOK?

This document goes some way to describe how the IMI Awards should look and feel, in print and online. Each section describes, in detail, how the different elements of the brand work together to create a strong, meaningful and memorable brand identity. It explains how those working with it can conform to a set of established guidelines in order to create a strong brand.

IMI Awards is the leading awarding body for the UK retail motor industry. We offer an unrivalled range of motor industry qualifications that demonstrate skills and competence; the foundation of a successful career.

TONE OF VOICE

USING AN APPROPRIATE TONE ENABLES US TO DEMONSTRATE THAT WE MEAN WHAT WE SAY. COPY MUST BE PUNCHY, CONCISE AND TO THE POINT. WE NEED TO AVOID CLICHÉ, INDECISIVE WORDING AND JARGON. MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE TONE MUST BE APPROPRIATE FOR THE AUDIENCE.

HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF GOOD VERSUS POOR COPYWRITING.

IMI Awards is the UK retail motor industry’s first choice for automotive qualifications and accreditations.

From management to technicians, we offer an unrivalled range of motor industry qualifications.

IMI Awards is committed to advancing the motor industry by being a pro-active, supportive and responsive partner to you, the training provider.

IMI Awards is a market-leading awarding organisation that develops and provides qualifications and accreditations for a network of over 550 schools, colleges and training providers in the UK retail motor industry.

Being the only specialist awarding body that focuses solely on the motor industry, we offer nationally-recognised qualifications that cover all roles in the sector; from administration and management through to master technicians.

Centres approved by IMI Awards can expect expert guidance and the very best of industry qualifications and accreditations, as well as dedicated customer support from both the in-house team and the regional external verifiers.

STYLE GUIDE FOR COPYWRITERS

A LITTLE BIT OF HELP

u IMI Awards – not IMI Awards Ltd., IMIAL or IMI. When referring to IMI Awards for the second time, within the body copy, it may be shortened to IMIA. “IMI Awards offer many qualifications. If you think an IMIA qualification is for you then visit imiawards.org.uk.” However, IMIA must be used with caution. Intended for ease of reading, it is important that the reader links the two terms.

u external verifier – not EV or External Verifier. It would now be ambiguous to use the term EV when referring to an external verifier as, within the industry, ‘electric vehicles’ are referred to as EVs.

u ePortfolio – not e-Portfolio or E-Portfolio

u eFusion – not e-fusion or Efusion

u Life Skills – not life skills or Life skills

u Customer Charter – not customer charter

u No full stops in acronyms, so MET not M.E.T.

u Numbers one to ten to be written in full. Number 11 onwards to be written in numerical figures

u Four figure numbers don’t have a comma. Larger ones do.

u En dash (-) to replace ‘through to’ in numbers, so 16-19 year olds not 16 – 19 year olds

u Em dash (–) can be used to replace commas and colons. They offer a familiar and friendly alternative to a comma or brackets.

THE LOGO

WHICH VERSION SHOULD YOU USE

The IMI Awards logo should appear in its two-colour format wherever possible. When it is not possible, i.e. when using a dark or brightly coloured background, the white-out version should be applied. The handshake and the ‘IMI Awards’ lettering must be used together – they are not independent of each other.

For use by the IMI Awards and approved centres

HOW SHOULD YOU REPRODUCE THE LOGO

The IMI Awards logo should be reproduced to a minimum of 10mm. This measurement is based on the length of the handshake icon within the logo. This is to ensure clear reproduction and readability. There is no maximum reproduction size but we like you to asses the usage carefully. In most instances for A4 literature the logo is reproduced at 48mm in total width. Where possible (in print) the IMI Awards logo should appear in the top left hand side of the page.

HOW MUCH SPACE SHOULD YOU APPLY

The IMI Awards logo should always be surrounded by clear space. The only exemption to this rule is on USB and sticker artwork. The clear space is based on the height of the ‘IMI Awards’ lettering in the logo. This isolation area ensures that the logo remains clear, crisp and free of other visual elements or text.

Minimum size.10mm

Approximate A4 document size. 48mm

3 colour master for centres.

The 2 colour logo version should always be reproduced in the IMI Awards corporate blue and orange.

Not for use by approved centres

Single colour or reversed for flexibility of design.

HOW NOT TO USE THE LOGO

IMIAWARDS

PLACEMENT ON AN IMAGE

There should always be a good contrast between the logo and the background colour or image. The background should not appear on a background colour that exceeds a tint value of 20% – nor should the logo be reversed out of a tint value of less than 80%.

Always make sure the logo has enough contrast to the image. Never skew or stretch the logo to fit your design. Never produce the logo in a non IMI Awards brand colour or tint.

Always leave the minimum space around the logo at all times.Never change the font or element within the master logo.Do not place the logo onto any busy areas of an image.

MISUSE OF MASTER FILES

Do not recreate the IMI Awards logo, use a substitute font, or reconfigure/resize its elements. Always use master artwork supplied by IMI Awards.

COLOUR PALETTES

CORPORATE

These are our two corporate brand colours. These two colours are only ever to be used in the master IMI Awards logo.

PRIMARY

This single colour is the primary text colour for all our marketing materials. We replace black with Pantone® 424 at all times.

COLOUR MATCHING

Please note that the colour reproduction of the PMS colours throughout this brand book is not 100% accurate

Colour variation may also occur when printing on different types of paper stock or through different printing processes, such as litho or digital.

All Pantone® CMYK colour breakdowns are taken from Pantone® Colour Bridge PLUS SERIES. Depending on the stock or on the individual printer, he or she may feel they need to slightly amend the values to achieve an accurate match to the Pantone® swatch.

The RGB values and HEX values also reference Pantone® Colour Bridge PLUS SERIES.

TYPOGRAPHY

PROFESSIONAL PRINT

IMI Awards use Helvetica Neue for body copy and stand-firsts and a bespoke IMI Awards font for all headings. These fonts are to be only used for professional print and for in house marketing substitute fonts are to be applied. These are suggested on the following page.

The colour of body copy should always be in grey, Pantone® 424 and not in black. This is to take away the harsh contrast and give a contemporary effect to the type.

PHOTOGRAPHY

PEOPLE

To give our brand credibility, it is important that we use the correct style of photography. Our style is reportage and very much about capturing a moment, rather than a posed photograph. By using imagery that shows “real” people that could be members of our centre network (candidates, trainers, motor industry professionals etc), we make our brand more relevant to our audience. Wherever possible, we should use photography of real students and employees in the learning environment, but if our only option is to choose stock photography then we should try to find models with some character and personality. There are also some important factors that must always be taken in to consideration when selecting images.

u The car model must be appropriate for the audience. For example, images showing an American stock model are not appropriate for UK or Asian-based audiences.

u Any imagery showing a technician working on a vehicle must adhere to health and safety regulation: protective gloves, appropriate clothing i.e. overalls, long hair tied back, no jewellery, a clean workshop.

u Ensure any props used are industry standard. So any tools that are in shot must be the correct one for the job shown, and in line with what technicians are using today.

Use perspective to capture and draw in the eye. Use a short depth of field and bring out the focus of the photo.

Use people but try focusing on other items to tell a story.

Get low or try new angles to add interest.

Try and crop the image to highlight and add interest.

PHOTOGRAPHY

SUPPORTING

Where appropriate, interesting abstract imagery can be used to suggest a mood whilst avoiding any specific content. This is especially useful in general marketing, because IMI Awards covers such a broad range of specialisms and sectors.

Crop in close to the application if possible to generalise image. Suggest benefits or link the abstract with the product message.

Use high contrast generic abstract motor images over which you can add messages.

Crop photography to aid usability and add interest.

ADDITIONAL BRAND ELEMENTS

HOW WE STAND OUT

We use a selection of additional elements to bring to life our brand visually. These elements when used together help to personalise the IMI Awards and are all a part of the way we communicate clearly and consistently with our customers.

BLOCK OF COLOUR

We use these blocks or arrows to highlight important key features or promote a call to action.

COVER GRADIENT

We use the cover gradient to display our logo and document title. Like with the call to action, it is important that these gradients are always consistent.

QUOTES

We try and use quotes with our reportage character photography. They help to strengthen the message and provide a link to the image.

BULLET POINTS

When we list key features as bullet points we always use the triangle version.

electric vehicle qualifications and accreditations from imi awards Electric vehicles (EVs) are increasing in popularity and, with this wide adoption, standards and procedures will also change.

about the programmes

The motor industry is changing. IMI Awards’ commitment to supporting change and development within the industry ensures individuals are provided with the knowledge and skills they need to stay ahead.

Those working with EVs will be required to maintain, repair and service vehicles to the highest possible standards – and have the correct knowledge and understanding of the issues that are emerging. And because IMI Awards qualifications have been developed by expert working groups from within the industry, candidates can be sure that the qualifications are both relevant and respected.

what are electric vehicles?

The term EV is very broad and can include:u Electric Vehicle / Car (EV)u Pure-Electric Vehicle (Pure EV)u Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)u Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (E-REV)u Electric Quadricycleu Hybrid: Full, Mild, Micro, Stop-Start

who are they suitable for?

IMI Awards’ EV qualifications are suited to individuals looking for a career in the automotive industry and those already employed as technicians – as well as those working in the fleet, public or emergency sectors.

Gaining EV knowledge will enable technicians and professionals to extend their skill-set – and employers to extend their product offering. This will ensure that, as technology develops, high standards are maintained.

qualification or accreditation?

IMI Awards offer two routes to achieve recognition: a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) or Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA).

what is the process?

Like all IMI Awards qualifications and accreditations, they are assessed through a combination of online testing plus oral and/or practical assessment(s). Assessments vary depending on the level and learning route taken.

VRQs can be achieved on a full or part-time basis at an IMI Awards approved centre where individuals will be assessed through online and practical assessments. To become ATA accredited, individuals must pass a series of practical assessments and an online knowledge test at an IMI Awards approved centre.

what are the benefits?

Successful individuals receive industry recognition for their achievements; proving their skills and knowledge to employers. Gaining a VRQ will mean individuals will receive an IMI Awards certificate. Individuals who gain ATA status will receive an ID card or ATA certificate (depending on the route chosen).

costs

In addition to the assessment cost (contact your nearest IMI Awards approved centre for exact costs), there is a single fee which includes registration and certification (or ATA ID card, depending on the route taken).u VRQ (all levels): £30.00u ATA full route: £50.00u ATA module: £35.00

vocationally related qualifications (vrqs)

Technical Certificates, or VRQs, provide individuals with the knowledge and skills they need for a successful career in the automotive industry. These qualifications have been developed in consultation with EV manufacturers and the IMI Sector Skills Council.

Propelled Vehicles

level 3u Electrically Propelled Vehicle Repair

and Replacement

what is achieved with the vrq route?

Successful achievement, and receipt of their VRQ certificate, allows individuals to practically demonstrate that they have the knowledge and skills required to maintain and repair EVs.

automotive technician accreditation (ata)

Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) is a national voluntary scheme which tests the current competence of individuals working in the retail motor industry.

Individuals can choose the full route or a single module based on safe working. Successful individuals will be issued with an ATA ID card (full route) or a certificate (single module) – the cost of which is included in the registration fee.u Electric Vehicle Technician u Hybrid Vehicle Safe Working Module

what is achieved with the ata route?

Once accredited, the technician will be entered on to the ATA register of accredited technicians and will be reassessed every three years to ensure they keep up-to-date with new standards and technologies. The IMI is the governing body for ATA. For more information visit automotivetechnician.org.uk

Knowing that our high quality technical EV training courses are endorsed by IMI Awards continues to take our organisation forward and bring in new business.

IMI Awards’ management qualifications have been developed in conjunction with automotive management manufacturers, dealers and training providers. As experts within the industry, they recognise the importance of preparing and upskilling the automotive managers of the future; so you can be sure that once you have passed an IMI Awards qualification you will have the relevant knowledge, skills and understanding for a successful career within automotive management. The assessments have all been specifically contextualised for the sector to help the learner retain information and apply their knowledge more effectively.

The entire suite of IMI Awards management qualifications are all based on the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF). Within the QCF each unit has been credited and levelled using two measurements: a credit value (typical hours of learning required*) and a level (of difficulty). One credit represents ten notional hours of learning – allowing you to work out, approximately, how long it would take to complete the unit and/or qualification. The level indicates the difficulty of the qualification – management qualifications from IMI Awards vary from Level 3 to Level 5.

VOcATIONAL cOMpETENcE QUALIfIcATIONS (VcQS) The VCQ, or Vocational Competence Qualification, is a nationally recognised qualification that demonstrates, to a national standard, competence in the workplace. VCQs are practically based and, to establish skill and proficiency, are assessed in the candidate’s place of work across a wide range of tasks and scenarios. Containing both mandatory and optional units, a VCQ provides flexibility across the various management roles within the automotive sector. The level of the VCQ (3 or 5) reflects the range of knowledge, skills and experience (and therefore the competence), that is expected of an employee as they progress through automotive management.

VOcATIONALLY rELATED QUALIfIcATIONS (VrQS) VRQs, or Vocationally Related Qualifications, are nationally recognised, vocationally-related qualifications which provide learners with the practical skills and essential knowledge needed to fulfil a role. These qualifications provide learners with a broad overview of the workplace, especially in areas such as organisational structures, departmental relationships, health and safety, and legal frameworks.

HELpfUL HINT:

Within the QCF, A-levels are Level 3, Certificates of Higher Education are Level 4 and Higher National Diplomas are Level 5.

Our values are embedded in offering learners the very best choice and quality. We have worked closely with IMI Awards for a number of years and we know that they share these values – which is why we chose them to be our delivery partners for our automotive management qualifications.

IMI Awards is the first choice for

automotive qualifications in the

retail motor industry and takes

responsibility for a large number

of students in this sector. These

qualifications are obtained through

IMI Approved centres, which build

and manage individual learning

portfolios, to enable students to

complete their courses. The free

ePortfolio is offered exclusively to

IMI Approved centres.

Lowestoft College is an IMI

Awards approved centre on the

Suffolk coast. The college offers

automotive courses, attracting

students from both the local area

and further afield. The college

had previously tried a number

of other online portfolio’s that

had proved ineffectual, so had

some initial doubts about trialling

the IMI Awards ePorfolio. This

case study explores the benefits

the IMI Awards ePortfolio offers

an approved centre, and Chris

Baker of Lowestoft College

discusses how the system

exceeded their expectations.

u is a free end-to-end product

Chris Baker is responsible for

monitoring the progress and individual

development of each student, which

has always been a challenge due

to the isolation of the college. This

problem is resolved when using

the ePortfolio due to it allowing

the college to use it as a form of

“distance learning because it gives

so many more options. We can email

and communicate wherever they

are which is vital here as we are so

remote”. Chris and the assessors

now have the ability to monitor the

students at any time of day, even if

they are not at the college.

This means they can keep better

monitor progress and highlight any

areas where the student is having

difficulty. This has nurtured “more

1-2-1 time with the students” Chris

says. Mark Bartle, the External

Verifier for Lowestoft College has

also noticed a better and more

focused relationship between

the teaching staff and students:

“The e-portfolio has given Lowestoft

College advantages in the relationship

between the candidates and

assessors, leading to much more

effective feedback to candidates, and

is also helping to raise the level and

quality of the qualification that the

candidates are achieving”.

Another ongoing issue that the

ePortfolio actively solved was that

of students losing or forgetting

their work, which Chris says “was

happening nearly every week”.

With ePortfolio, all work is located

in a safe and secure place which is

accessible anywhere by staff and

students via the internet. Therefore,

there are no excuses for missing

assignments, and this ensures

students take responsibility for getting

their work done. Seeing their options

on ePortfolio, gives students more

control over the tasks they do which

creates “an ‘I can do that’ attitude”.

As a result, it has produced healthy

competition between learners,

which has seen them progressing

a lot quicker and completing their

assignments in shorter timeframes.

IMI Awards’ ePortfolio:

SUMMARYAfter a few bad experiences with

other online portfolios, Chris Baker

has been consistently surprised by

the quality of ePortfolio and, as a

result, the trial of it has now been

rolled out to all their courses. Chris

has noticed the ease with which

staff and students adapted to the

system, and would “recommend

the ePortfolio every time.”

IMI Awards is the only awarding body in the UK that focuses solely on the motor industry. They provide over 150 nationally-recognised qualifications and accreditation programmes to young and adult learners, whether they are at an early stage in their training or a professional looking to advance their career.

Mark Bateman is the centre co-ordinator for ePortfolio at Blackpool and the Fylde College. The IMI Awards approved centre decided to trial ePortfolio to help them better monitor and help their students to manage their individual learning portfolios. The number of IMI Awards approved centres using ePortfolio is constantly increasing, and they are seeing significant improvements as a result. This case study highlights the benefits Blackpool and the Fylde College gained from using ePortfolio.

SummAryMark Bateman concludes that the ePortfolio is perfect for centres and their users. It is enjoyed by students who are already accustomed to using this style of technology, and the staff have also found very easy to use. Blackpool and the Flyde College have found that ePortfolio offers a more effective system, with far more benefits to staff and candidates that the paper-based portfolio. Overall it is designed with everyone’s needs in mind, and has been a proven success.

Blackpool and the Fylde College were keen from the outset for their automotive department to go paperless and use an online portfolio system. Mark Bateman chose the IMI Awards ePortfolio over competition because it was free and similar to one they had developed themselves. With their experience in mind, Blackpool and the Fylde College were invited to help IMI Awards develop the ePortfolio. They tried, tested and developed it to ensure it is suited to centres’ needs. Steve Longworth, Chief Verifier at IMI Awards, trains the centres how to use the ePortfolio and says: “The early involvement of our approved centres and expert working groups during the ePortfolio initial development phase, proved crucial in creating a bespoke end-to-end platform from registration to certification, which now meets the needs of all end users”.

Mark Bateman had initial concerns that staff and learners wouldn’t embrace the modern system and that it would be time consuming for them to learn this new technology. However, this was dispelled as both teachers and candidates found it clear to understand and user friendly. He was quick to discover the many benefits that the ePortfolio has to offer. He states “the main reason for liking

the system is based around the simple nature of collating evidence, tracking it to the standards and the fact it is backed and supported by the awarding body”. He goes on to say that the system gives “instant feedback to the learner on submitted work” and is an “excellent way of storing evidence collected that can’t be lost or damaged”. He also realises that they get more support as it creates “more virtual contact with learners”.

Michael Trow, a Level 3 Light Vehicle student who moved from a paper-based portfolio to the ePortfolio, supports the new system: “ePortfolio is easy to pick up and learn; anyone can do it. It’s great.” Michael has also found that the ePortfolio has allowed him to progress quicker: “I can see where I am and I don’t have to look through a folder. It’s all clearly in front of me with my choices and targets”. He remarked that his progress is faster not only because the “assessors can see where you are and give you the right support” but because he is more aware of remaining tasks since “you can see what you have left to do”. He goes on to say that he likes the virtual support it gives by providing “up to date progress charts” and it is “nicely organised and easy to upload the pictures to”.

IMI Awards is the leading awarding body for qualifications within the retail motor industry, supporting over 70,000 learners every year. IMI Awards approved centres guide and support students through compiling and managing their individual learning portfolios.

East Kent College is a well established centre offering a plethora of courses across a range of subject areas, including automotive qualifications. They became an IMI Awards approved centre in January 2012, and decided to trial the ePortfolio. In this case study, Stuart Cumming, Centre Co-Ordinator at East Kent College, talks about his experience of ePortfolio, and the benefits the system has to offer an IMI Awards approved centre.

IMI Awards’ ePortfolio:

SUMMARYAny initial concerns that East Kent College may have had about ePortfolio, quickly disappeared once they started using it in their centre. It actually created a more efficient and productive system, giving teaching staff a better insight in to student progress. ePortfolio gives students the opportunity to work in a way better suited to them, which increases their enthusiasm and in turn drives their progress.

FIND OUT MORETo find out more about ePortfolio please visit imiawards.org.uk

or email [email protected]

Stuart Cumming admits that he was initially sceptical, concerned that the system could be a hindrance by being slow to update, having technical issues and generally being “clunky”. However, from the start of the trial, he says he has been pleasantly surprised by the smooth running of ePortfolio. He observes that both students and teaching staff have picked it up with ease, and moreover, actually enjoy using it: “all the students are fully engaged”. Any technical issues that arose were sorted with “speed and excellence” by the helpful team at IMI Awards.

Stuart has the responsibility of tracking the progress of each group, including the teaching staff and assessors; a task which he had previously found time-consuming and laborious. However, the design of the ePortfolio - with its progress charts and clear tracking assessment tools - gives him instant, up-to-date access at his fingertips:

Having everything in one place, he says, “gives me all the evidence I need in an instant, and also clearly highlights any potential weak areas for the learner”. ePortfolio efficiently enables students to get the support they want in the areas they most need it.

The ePortfolio offers flexible working (for staff and students) and, as a result, Stuart has noticed a significant improvement in students’ work being signed off sooner: “Giving us access any time of day has helped a lot and given staff the freedom to check work and assess portfolios anytime to allow the students to progress. One of our L3 Apprentice candidates managed to complete all of their knowledge units in a far shorter timeframe than expected, thanks to ePortfolio”.

Nicola Martin, the Qualifications Services Officer at IMI Awards says the ePortfolio is designed to “give centres an engaging system” and in turn “shows their progress in real time at the click of a button”. Stuart confirms this has made it “easier for students to see how they are progressing toward their short term goal” and it is having a very positive effect by making them “more competitive with their own progress”.

The External Verifier, Robert Leggett, observes that “despite only recently becoming an IMI Awards approved centre, East Kent College have successfully put a large number of candidates through courses using ePortfolio, and all of the assessments were completed to a high standard.”

IMI Awards recognise and support the skills of over 70,000 young and adult learners each year. These learners are trained and supported by IMI Awards’ approved centres who take on the onerous task of building and managing learning portfolios; keeping them safe, secure and accurate while motivating and supporting their students.

S&B Automotive Training in Bristol is a large, well established approved centre. It focuses solely on the automotive sector and therefore handles a good proportion of IMI Awards’ candidates. Russell Filby, ePortfolio Champion at S&B, takes responsibility for these candidates. He has to ensure that the training is up to IMI Awards standards by monitoring learner progression, internal quality control and IV feedback. This case study identifies the benefits that ePortfolio has to offer an IMI Awards approved centre.

u is a free end-to-end product (from registration to certification) which is built around the QCF

u offers free training and unlimited support

Russell Filby says it was a “no brainer” for S&B Automotive Academy to use ePortfolio and has never looked back. Since using ePortfolio, Russell noticed the savings were not just the obvious paper and pens – but it was also saving the staff huge amounts of time. As a result of freeing up the tutor and assessor time, it unlocked more one to one support time between students and staff. This extra support has meant they have seen increased productivity and created “speedy achievement for the candidates” (Glyn Evans, EV for S&B Training).

The Formula 1 design of ePortfolio has captured the interest of the S&B students by bringing 21st century learning and access to their fingertips. The versatility of this new 24/7 learning allows them to take control and ownership of their own development at times of the day when it suits them best.

Russell says he has noticed this “encourages greater interaction” and “faster progression towards achievement”. ePortfolio gives students access to resources and learning support – and they can use an iPhone app to access and upload evidence at any time. This keeps them motivated and

ensures their work is safe and organised with clear progress charts: “The student information is safe and secure and the fact it works off the back of the IMI Awards database ensures details are correct and accurate”.

The progress charts and Formula 1 screen have also been noted to instil healthy competition amongst students: “Candidates are keen to see how they are progressing in comparison with other students within their groups… it encourages competition between students to complete tasks, engage with their ePortfolio – and spurs them on to take a lead”.

ePortfolio has been developed, tried and tested with expert working groups. The result is a slick and smooth system that centres can introduce with confidence; Russell found it to be “a simple user-friendly layout”. The staff and students at S&B (of all ICT levels) have found it quick to learn after one day of training – with regular support where it has been needed: “The support we have received from IMI Awards has been second to none”.

ImI Awards’ ePortfolio:

SummAryIn a busy approved centre environment ePortfolio has multiple benefits to all users; it has been a very positive change for S&B Automotive Training. Not only is ePortfolio free and easy to use but it has saved money and, even more significantly, time to work with students. The students have also embraced the system, especially the 24/7 learning opportunities, and it has driven up productivity as a result.
