In this Sunday's readings we hear the voice of the Prophet Zechariah as he delivers difficult oracles from God. The people have returned from exile. Now back in Jerusalem, they face the arduous work of rebuilding the Temple. Zechariah acknowledges their hardships and foresees more obstacles.
But their grief has a purpose. It is a remedy, a penance to heal them -- "a fountain to purify from sin and uncleanness."
Thus purified, the people will be ready to receive the Messiah and usher in a new creation. God promises to "pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and petition." So that no one should mistake the identity of the Messiah when He comes, God says through Zechariah: "they shall look on him whom they have thrust through, and they shall mourn for him as one mourns for an only son … a first-born." That prophecy could be fulfilled in no other than Jesus, the Word made Flesh, the Only-Begotten Son of God, the Crucified.
The day of the Messiah indeed came, with an outpouring of the Spirit. Yet it was a saving event not only for Jerusalem, but for all people. Both Jews and Gentiles could become "children of God," in St. Paul's stunning phrase. Now, “There is neither Jew nor Greek … slave nor free … male and female … if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendant, heirs according to the promise.”
In light of these readings, Sunday's Gospel is poignant. Jesus asks his closest friends, " who do you say that I am?" Peter replies, "The Messiah of God." Jesus then reveals to them, as Zechariah had foretold, that the Messiah must be "thrust through" and killed and mourned before the Spirit would come forth on Pentecost.
The day has indeed come. Yet still we long for its fullness, and so we pray to God in the Psalm: "for you I long! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts, Like a land parched, lifeless, and without water."

2016 Missionary Cooperative Appeal -- This Weekend June 18/19
The Missionary Cooperative Appeal is an annual program in which missionaries
from around the world speak at each parish. The goal of this appeal is to increase
awareness of missionary work and to raise funds to help missionary organizations
continue their evangelization efforts. In the Diocese of Sacramento, 48 difference
missions were selected this year to each speak at two parishes.
Sister Pushpa Augustine Minister General will conduct a mission appeal at Our Lady
of Grace on behalf of their congregation, the Society of Christu Jyothi Sisters (Sisters
of Christ the Light). The Sisters are from South India. Their works in India include
evangelization, pastoral and prison ministry, care of orphans, child laborers,
dropouts, the hearing and speech impaired, education and health care in the interior
village and programs for the empowerment of women. Please be generous in
supporting their mission work with your prayers and donations.
God bless you.

What is the Fortnight for Freedom? From June 21 through
July 4, Catholics nationwide will take part in the fifth annual
“Fortnight for Freedom”, a 14-day period of prayer,
education, and action for the protection of our fundamental
right to religious liberty. The Fortnight for Freedom was first
initiated by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Ad Hoc
Committee on Religious Liberty in 2012, in response to the government’s HHS
mandate forcing employers, even Catholic employers and private business owners of
good conscience, to provide abortifacient drugs, contraception, and sterilization in
their employees’ health plans or face exorbitant fines. For the Catholic Church, our
many ministries of education, healthcare, and charitable works continue to be at
stake. Many people of all faiths have spoken out strongly against this violation of
conscience rights. Currently 105 cases with over 300 plaintiffs have been filed
against the mandate (visit www.becketfund.org to learn more about these cases). The
theme for this year’s Fortnight for Freedom is Witnesses to Freedom, emphasizing
the link between religious freedom and bearing witness to the truth of the Gospel,
keeping in mind the sacrifice of so many martyrs for the faith, both past and present.
Visit www.fortnight4freedom.org to learn more about the very real and current
threats to our religious liberty and rights of conscience and what you can do about it.
