PARISH NURSE MINISTRYHealth Information

Protect yourself as West Nile season gets underway. The hot weather combined with heavy rains have made this a par-ticularly bad year for mosquitoes, which suggests it could also be a bad year for West Nile Virus, which is spread by mosquitoes.1. Use insect repellant. Recommended by the CDC as ex-cellent are "DeepWoods Sportsmen," " Cutter Backwoods Unscented," and "Off Family Care Smooth and Dry." 2. Where possible, keep windows closed and use air con-ditioning. Mosquitoes thrive in warm, humid air. They don't fare well in cool, dry air. 3. Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts. 4. Empty standing water from gutters, flower pots, buckets, or other items outside your home. There is no specific treatment for West Nile Virus infection. But seek medical attention if you develop symptoms, includ-ing fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diar-rhea, or rash. You might need interventions to help support your body's functions until the infection clears.

The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) par-ticipated recently in an international effort that took ac-tion against thousands of web sites that illegally sell po-tentially dangerous prescription medicines to consumers, but many more of these sites are still operating. The FDA developed "BeSafeRx: Know your Online Pharmacy" to help. This web site offers resources for consumers, health professionals, and organizations about the risks of purchasing from a fraudulent online pharmacy and how to identify them. Fake online phar-macies can manipulate their web sites to appear legiti-mate, so checking the pharmacy's license through your state board of pharmacy is an important step to know whether or not you are using a safe and legal online phar-macy.
