He will not let this opportunity pass him by. So, like a drowning man, he cried out for help: “Jesus, Son of David have pity on me!” The blind Bartimaeus represents our collective human situation that is constantly yearning for healing and liberation from weakness, sickness, poverty and sin. Our blindness might not necessarily be the physical loss of vision. However, it could be whatever that limits and prevents us from reaching our potentials in life. The good news today is that, Christ our high priest is always ready to hear, heal and liberate us from whatever is limiting us in life. He wants us to see again. To see again, is to have a living faith in Christ, our high priest who mediates for us before the Father. However, like the blind Bartimaeus, we must humbly call out to him: “Jesus, Son of David have pity on me…Lord that I may see.” Also, like Bartimaeus, neither the crowd, nor pride can stop us from reaching Christ. As the psalmist tells us: “The poor man called and the Lord heard him” (Ps 36, 4). Peace be with you! Black Catholic History Month Celebration
Sunday November 11th St. Mary’s in Greensboro will celebrate Black Catholic History Month at the 11:00 am mass. St. Mary’s pastor Fr. Bill Allegretto, C.M. will be or Celebrant. Deacon Stephen Pickett, Of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Lenoir, NC will present the Homily on The Knights of Peter Claver. The celebration will include music coordinated by Al Baxter 11:00 amChoir Director, Professor Godfrey Uzochukwu and The Igbo Catholic Community choir. Immediately following Mass; parishioners and other guests are invited to join Deacon Pickett in a discussion group in classrooms 7 and 8; as he continues to address the historical legacy and present activities of the Knights of Peter Claver. Lunch will be provided.
Masses for All Saints and All Souls Day will be Thursday, November 1, 2018 and Friday, November 2, 2018 at 6:00 pm. All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation.

month of November. Please remember we will pray for your loved ones the ENTIRE month of November. The
suggested stipend per intention ranges from $10 to whatever your heart pleases.

Primero hablemos de la fiesta de todos los santos. Los orígenes exactos de esta celebración son inciertos, aunque, después de la legalización del cristianismo en 313, una conmemoración común de los santos, especialmente los mártires, apareció en varias áreas de la Iglesia. All Saints Day Both the Feast of All Saints and the Feast of All Souls evolved in the life of the Church independently of paganism and Halloween. Let us first address the Feast of All Saints. The exact origins of this cele-bration are uncertain, although, after the legalization of Christianity in 313, a common commemoration of the saints, especially the martyrs, appeared in various areas throughout the Church. The primary reason for establishing a common feast day was because of the desire to honor the great number of martyrs, especially during the per-secution of Emperor Diocletian (284-305), the worst and most extensive of the persecutions. Quite simply, there were not enough days of the year for a feast day for each martyr and many of them died in groups. A com-mon feast day for all saints, therefore, seemed most appropriate. The designation of November 1 as the Feast of All Saints occurred over time. Pope Gregory III (731-741) dedicated an oratory in the original St. Peter’s Basilica in honor of all the saints on November 1 and this date then became the official date for the celebration of the Feast of All Saints in Rome. According to an early Church historian, John Beleth (d. 1165), Pope Greg-ory IV (827-844) officially declared November 1 the Feast of All Saints. However, Sicard of Cremona (d. 1215) recorded that Pope Greg-ory VII (1073-85) finally mandated November 1 as the date to celebrate the Feast of All Saints. In all, we find the Church establishing a liturgical feast day in honor of the saints independent of any pagan influence. Nevertheless, All Saints Day clearly arose from genuine Christian devotion independent of Halloween.
All Souls Day Along with the Feast of All Saints developed the Feast of All Souls. The Church has consistently encouraged the offering of prayers and Mass for the souls of the faithful departed in Purgatory. At the time of their death, these souls are not perfectly cleansed of venial sin or have not atoned for past transgressions, and thereby are deprived of the Beatific Vision. The faithful on earth can assist these souls in Purgatory in attaining the Beatif-ic Vision through their prayers, good works, and the offering of Mass. St. Odilo, the Abbot of Cluny (d. 1048), decreed for all of the Cluniac mon-asteries that special prayers be offered and the Office of the Dead sung for all of the souls in Purgatory on November 2, the day after All Saints. The Benedictines and Carthusians adopted that same devotion, and soon November 2 was adopted as the Feast of All Souls for the whole Church. Nevertheless, All Souls Day as well as all Saints Day are rooted in Chris-tian belief and arose in this life of the Church through a healthy spirituality, despite some pagan trappings that may have survived and have remained attached to their celebration.
