My Dear People,
On behalf of the priests and parishioners of
St. Bede the Venerable Parish, I welcome all of
our visitors who join us this weekend as we
honor Padre Pio, a priest, a healer and a
canonized saint of the Roman Catholic Church.
Normally, this column is my way of addressing
our parishioners about current events. But
today's version is addressed to parishioners and
pilgrims as well.
Recently I was interviewed by two local Catholic radio stations,
regarding this weekend's Second Annual Padre Pio Festival. In
both programs, the first question I was asked was, "Why did you
start this festival, Monsignor?" And here is my answer:
When I was in grade school in Holy Saviour Parish in Norris-
town, the Immaculate Heart sisters all talked about how a young
girl from the parish, little Vera Marie Calandra, was seriously ill
and had to have her bladder removed at Children's Hospital in
Philadelphia. The doctors did not give great hope for her long-term
survival. Her mother had read a book about Padre Pio, a holy
Capuchin priest in Italy, who reportedly performed miracles, and
received the Stigmata, the actual wounds of Jesus Christ. As a
young child, I was fascinated by this story, and by what later
transpired.
Little Vera's mother and father took her to Padre Pio, who
personally laid his stigmatized hands on her head and prayed for
her recovery. Shortly after returning to America, she was examined
and doctors at Children's Hospital said that "beyond explana-
tion," a new bladder was growing in the little girl. In thanksgiving
to God, Mrs. Calandra began to spread the news of this miracle
throughout the United States, and began the devotion to Padre Pio.
As a child I was fascinated by the story, and dreamed of some day
visiting this holy man, something I only did many years later, and
after he had died.
Then high school years, seminary life, and years of priesthood
distracted my interest in Padre Pio. Until two things happened.
Three years ago, I read a book on Padre Pio, and my interest was
re-ignited. And secondly I began to talk to people here in St. Bede's
and beyond, about my "rediscovered saint." I found out how many
people are not only devoted to Padre Pio, but have had big and
small miracles and blessings through praying to him.
But for myself, I think the greatest reason for me to want to
spread his devotion is because I want to model my priesthood on
his zeal for souls. You see, a priest is a bridge between God and
His people. Padre Pio was and still is a powerful bridge, connect-
ing us with God. I hope and pray that your experience of Padre
Pio's intercessory powers, especially during our festival, will help
you to always, as he advised, "Pray, Hope and Don't Worry."
May God Bless You,

2 Kings 4: 8-11, 14-16a
Psalm 89
Romans 6: 3-4, 8-11
Matthew 10: 37-42 In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus summarizes both the costs
of discipleship and its rewards. The conditions of disci-
pleship may appear harsh. Yet they underline for us a
truth—choosing anything with one’s whole heart has con-
sequences. Choosing life with Christ means that every
relationship we have must be understood from a new per-
spective. Matthew also outlines the reward of hospital-
ity. To welcome another in Jesus’ name is to extend hos-
pitality to Jesus himself. We have many opportunities in
our daily life to reach out to others, to be a welcoming
presence and a sign of God’s love.

Don’t Miss the Special Testimony about Padre Pio
Mrs. Emilie Vollrath was kind enough to share
her personal faith experience about Padre Pio
and this holy saint’s involvement and interces-
sion during her son Jimmy’s recent illness and
eventual death. Her testimonial was recently
videotaped by parishioner Gary Gehringer and
is now posted on our festival website:

PARISH MALVERN RETREAT WEEKEND Sometimes the frantic pace of
life can leave us with little time to
deal with growing our personal rela-
tionship with Jesus Christ. Finding
the time and place can be an obsta-
cle. A weekend retreat can be the
time and the Malvern Retreat House
the place. We invite you to join the
men/women of the parish for a retreat at Malvern the weekend
of July 21, 22 and 23. Call Jim McMonagle at (215) 968-5489
or email him at [email protected]. The Malvern
Retreat House offers retreats for men, women, married couples
and families. Visit our website (malvernretreat.com) or call

St. Bede Adoration SocietySt. Bede Adoration Society "Could you not watch one hour with me?" (MT. 26:40)
Some people may want to join the Adoration Society but
feel that they cannot commit to an hour every week. Why not
consider becoming a prayer partner? This commitment is
usually two times a month instead of every week. It is a great
way to get involved and join the Adoration Society without a
weekly commitment.
Our current prayer partner hours of need are as follows:
Wednesday 3AM, Thursday 4AM, 2PM & 3PM, Friday 4AM
and Saturday 12AM & 11PM.
Perpetual Adoration will be held in the lower day chapel
of the church from Saturday, June 24th at 4PM until Sun-
day, June 25th at 8PM. This is to accommodate the many
visitors to the Padre Pio Festival this weekend.
For more information about perpetual adoration please con-
tact Debbie & Sean McDermott at 215-504-9897 or e-mail us

Religious EducationReligious Education Advocates, Lawmakers ‘Stand up for Life’
at Capitol Rally
Standing united on the
steps of the state’s Capitol, pro-
life advocates and lawmakers
renewed the call to stand up for
life by urging passage of legis-
lation (House Bill 77 or Senate
Bill 3) which would reform
Pennsylvania’s Abortion Con-
trol Act.
State Rep. Kathy Rapp, who was inspired by the verse 30:19
from Deuteronomy where God advises us to “choose life”, led
the call to support legislation to enact a ban on abortions from
the 20th week on during a pregnancy.
Research, medical advances and scientific evidence have all
shown that by the 20th week of a pregnancy, unborn babies are
capable of feeling pain in utero – furthering the need to stand
up for the protection of the sanctity and dignity of all human
life.
In addition, the legislation also would completely ban the
cruel and brutal practice of dismemberment abortions in the
state of Pennsylvania.
More than 12 other states, including neighboring Ohio have
begun to reduce the maximum gestational age for legal abor-
tions. Sitting down, Pennsylvania will remain off that list.
Standing up, Pennsylvania could be the next state to save the
lives of unborn children and protect the lives of mothers!

Hello Everyone! SUMMER IS HERE!!! We have LOADS of activi-ties planned for this summer!!! The first two weeks of activities are listed on this page but the complete list of SUMMER ACTIVITIES was sent via email to those on our email list. Summer activities include; lots of service opportunities, a trip to St. Katharine Drexel Shrine, a Suicide Awareness Walk, a Sleep Out (to raise awareness to homelessness in our area) and of course the Triple T gatherings. The summer calendar is included in our Youth Ministry Newsletter (contact me if you would like to get on the YM email list to receive this and future newsletters). The calendar is also posted on our website and on the YM bulletin board. There is an emphasis on SERVICE because over the years I have found that the summer time is the best time for many of our teens to get their school required service hours/LINCS hours since they tend to have limited availability during the school year. For students in Middle School, I’ve developed a MISSION WEEK (July 31—Aug. 4th) in which students will come to St. Bede for a full day of service and service learning. It will be a GREAT week! And spots are limited. So sign up NOW!!!! ALL teens, families, parishioners - are invited to attend our trip to St. Katharine Drexel Shrine on Friday, August 4th. We will visit the shrine, have adoration, lunch and just spend some time there. This is a great opportunity to spend time there before the Shrine closes its doors for good at the end of the year. Contact me if inter-ested in attending this day (a bus will be provided if enough interest). To get information about the Youth Ministry programs visit our website st-bede.org/youthministry or email me at [email protected], or call the Youth Ministry office at 215-357-5113. God Bless!
