Briefing on Primary Four
Subject-based Banding
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
“We recognise different abilities... and help each
student to proceed at a pace that he can
manage.”
Why introduce Subject-based Banding?
Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam Minister for Education
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
• To provide more flexibility to pupils with strengths and abilities that vary across subjects
• To encourage greater interaction among pupils with different strengths
Why introduce Subject-based Banding?
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
Rationale and Intent
• Providing our weaker pupils a differentiated curriculum that would best maximize their potential.
• These pupils may have particular strengths, and we should develop them as much as possible by offering them specific subjects at a higher (standard) level of study.
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
Retaining Key Tenets of
Ability-Driven Education
• School-based Examination at P4
• P4 Subject Based Banding
• Parental choice at the end of P4
• Final Decision by Schools end of P5
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
• Every child will be encouraged to do the subjects at the levels that best meet his abilities
• Removal of streams in Primary 5 and 6
What Subject-based Banding means
for your child
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
Standard vs. Foundation Subject
• Foundation subjects put focus on mastery of core content and skills.
• These are pitched at a lower level as
compared to the corresponding standard subject.

How will PSLE scores be calculated?
• The PSLE scoring system remains unchanged
• The raw mark for each subject is converted to a
transformed score (T-score)
– The T-score reflects the pupils’ standing relative to
other pupils on a common scale
• The Aggregate Score is the sum of the T-score in all
subjects
– Each subject carries equal weighting
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
How will PSLE scores be calculated?
The PSLE score takes into account the
• content and demand of each subject
( Standard or Foundation level )
• number of subjects taken
Taking subjects at the foundational
level will lead to lower aggregate score
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
What Parents Need to Know
• Scores in Foundation subjects would be lower
compared to Standard subjects as the PSLE score
will take into account the difference in content and
demand of any foundation subject(s) taken.
• Based on performance at PSLE, pupils taking
4 Standard subjects may be posted to: Express ,
Normal Academic, Normal Technical.
• Pupils offering at least 2 Foundation subjects
will most likely be channelled to Normal
Academic stream in secondary school.
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
What Parents Need to Know
• Pupils taking 3 Foundation subjects and 1
Standard subject could qualify for
Normal Academic course if they do very well.
• Pupils taking Foundation and Standard
subjects could be in the same class.
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
Repeating P6 after failing PSLE
• Pupils need not take all subjects at Foundation level
• Pupils can take some subject combination on a different one based on results.
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
Selection Criteria
• Based on P4 mid -year and end- of -the year examination data
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
Subject Combinations
• Standard level for EL & Maths for most pupils except for pupils doing 4 Foundation subjects
4S + HMT
4S( EL, Math, Sc, MT)
3S( EL, Math, Sc) + 1F( MT)
3S( EL, Math, MT) + 1F( Sc)
1S( MT) + 3F( EL, Math, Sc)
4F( EL, Math, Sc, MT)
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
Pupil Placement Issues
• Current policies will apply for ad hoc transfers and admissions
• Subject combination a pupil takes at
receiving school will be determined jointly by school and parents
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
Parental Option
• When exercising your option WITH your
child, please opt wisely…
• For a subject combination that matches your child’s
capability,
NOT
• What your other children were capable of
• What you want of your child
• Where your child’s preferences are
Geylang Methodist School (Primary)
Parental Option
Opt for the course and not the class as
the school decides on your child’s class
based on their results and not the
course.
