LIVE THEATRE
Lighthouse Festival Theatre in downtown Port Dover is celebrat-ing its 35th anniversary year and offers professional plays through-out the summer.
The 2014 season opened to rave reviews with Norm Foster’s hilari-ous comedy “The Foursome” .
Dave Carley’s comedy “Test Drive” is on stage from June 18 to July 5. The play features Earl Hughes who loves his wife and kids but cars are his passion and his journey begins in 1954 and comes to a screeching stop in 2014.
From July 9 to July 26 attend “Who’s Under Where?” about two aspiring fashionistas about to make the deal of their lives until their jealous, and mistaken, husbands jump to conclusions and sabotage the big night. This comedy farce is written by Marcia Kash and Douglas Hughes.
“Trying” runs on stage at
Lighthouse Theatre from July 30 to August 16. Based on a true story by Joanna McClelland Glass, the story tells of the primary American Nuremberg trial judge struggling to write his memoirs. Enter Sarah, a smart, young woman from the Prairies hired to be his assistant against his wishes. This witty and
touching portrait is based on a true story, written by the woman who experienced it all.
“The Gentleman Clothier” is a world premiere play at Lighthouse Theatre written by Norm Foster. This comedy tells of Norman Dav-enport who was born in the wrong century or at least that’s what his keen interest in men’s fashion from the 1800s has led him to believe. As he opens a store and forced to cater to more current tastes, he makes a wish that changes his life forever.
Rounding out the season from September 16th to 20th is “Memo-ries of Rock and Roll” and a trip back to the 1950s with over two hours of live music

Erie Beach Hotel is a Port Dover tradition
The famous Arbor has been a Port Dover landmark for almost a century.
The Arbor is the home of Golden Glow fruit drinks and Ritz Red Hots (foot-long hot dogs), hamburgers, fries and ice cream treats. Tony Sch-neider and staff continue the tradi-tions as patrons dress up their Red Hots and hamburgers with a wide selection of homemade condiments.
Just across Main Street is Arbor-town Mini Golf that provides children and adults 18-holes of fun.

GREAT FOOD
The popularity of the landmark Erie Beach Hotel on Walker Street is about hospitality and great food. For three generations the Schneider family has perfected the way to cook fresh Lake Erie perch … it is a matter of great pride with them.
The Cove Room on the main floor is open daily year round with an extensive menu of tempting choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The
salad cart that is brought to each ta-ble offers specialty salads and pickled treats. Celery bread is a traditional favourite.
Since last summer, The Cove Room has undergone a stylish new look with its beach and lake motifs creating a welcoming ambience. Patrons will also admire the new uniforms of the wait staff, being the first change since 1946.
Pub-style dining at the Terrace Room on the upper level is the gather-ing place by the jug-of-beer crowd and platter of fish crowd. The Terrace Room serves a wide menu of favou-rite foods from noon until late night.
Whether it’s dinner out, a family gathering or a business meeting, An-drew and Pam Schneider of The Erie Beach Hotel can accommodate many groups in a number of dining rooms.
THE LAWN
Everyone admires the beautiful lawn and gardens in front of The Erie Beach Hotel. You may know that 50 years ago a Dodg’em cars amusement ride filled half the front lawn.

Bronze statue on the pier honours fishermenThe bronze monument honouring local fishermen stands 11 feet high and is located at the end of Harbour Street near the Port Dover lighthouse. The monument was designed by artist Kathryn Hogg of Waterford and Alex Godden of Simcoe. The total project cost over $100,000. Around the base of the monument on the upright granite slabs are the names of the Lake Erie fishermen from this area who lost their lives while engaged in fish-ing. The sidewalk bricks on all sides of the memorial are inscribed with the names of the people, and families, who donated generously towards the cost of the monument.

Visit Len’s Mill Store for great shopping
For over 40 years people from Port Dover, and far beyond, have flocked to Len’s Mill Store on upper St. George Street, at Clifford St., for just about everything for home, garden, men’s, women’s and children’s clothing. In fact, the inventory is so extensive it requires two large warehouses to display it all.
Today, the company has ten locations across Ontario and it all started in Port Dover. These deep roots date back to 1921 when Alex Innes operated Norfolk Knitters for the manufacture of yard goods. The company was located in a building along Silver Lake on St. Patrick Street (today’s Dover Animal Hospital) until the Sunbeam Shoe Company closed its plant on St. George Street and the operation moved to that large building.
Over half a century ago, the business was purchased by Len Menary who produced specialized face clothes, towels, bathrobes and children’s clothing. At about that time everything changed for the industrious Mr. Menary. The Asian influence swept Canada with low cost clothing and the astute Len Menary ceased manufacturing to change direction in the spacious building on St. George Street.
The newly established Len’s Mill Store owner shopped across Canada for end-of-lines, inventory clear-outs and wherever there was a bargain sale and brought those goods to sell in Port Dover. The public loved the products and also the prices and within a few years, a second warehouse was built on the site. As well, Len’s Mill Stores were opened in other communities. Today there are ten in Southern Ontario.
Len’s Mill Store is a shoppers’ delight. It is a tourist attraction along with Port Dover’s harbourfront, popular eateries, theatre, boating and sandy beach.
One warehouse is filled with hundreds of bolts of yard goods. There is a fabric choice for every purpose from draperies to dressmaking and from quilting to upholstery materials. This warehouse has designer patterns, sewing accessories, yarn and knitting supplies -- for the beginner or expert homecrafter.
The other warehouse is even bigger. Everyone can be well dressed after a visit to Len’s Mill Store. First-time customers are amazed by the extensive displays and racks of fashions con-fronting them. This spring the management has rearranged the clothing for easier selection. Check out their “Great Sock Wall”. Quality clothing for men, women and children at factory outlet prices.
Also in the building are linens for bed, bath and kitchen, garden tools, household gadgets, bridal accessories and a wide selection of grocery items too! When in Port Dover, always drop into Len’s Mill Store on St. George Street North.

In 1959 Fred Knechtel began run-ning a food concession for Don Ivey on Walker Street near the beach. A couple of years later the entrepre-neur purchased what was then a fish and chips and chicken place known as ‘Scotty’s’. At that same time he also managed the Port Dover Dairy Bar on Main Street. Eventually, Fred and his wife Betty purchased the ‘Do-ver Dairy Bar’ to become full-time, year-round restaurateurs.

Ed Robinson Homes We’ll work with you to build your dream home
Nestled along the forest’s edge and minutes from the sandy beaches of Port Dover sits a serene new home development known as Pine Ridge Estates where the homes are as impres-sive as the location.
With Phase II nearly complete, Ed Robin-son Homes is getting ready to start in phase III. Those who have already joined the Pine Ridge Estates community have found it a great loca-tion; just minutes to downtown Port Dover, the Pier and the Beach. Forty-five minutes south of Hamilton, thirty minutes from Brantford, and a short fifteen minutes to Simcoe, Port Do-ver has long been a popular location for those looking to escape the hectic pace of the city and still enjoy a wide variety of amenities.
Builder Glenn Morris and his wife Diane continue to work with a great group of peo-ple at Ed Robinson Homes, each providing personal service to each homeowner in each
stage of the building process. “The last few lots in Phase II are priced to sell as we ready ourselves to start Phase III. We enjoy work-ing with each of the homeowners individually and encourage each to be involved as much as possible as we work together to build their dream home.”
Along with the many single family home designs available, Ed Robinson Homes is pres-ently building a number of freehold semi-de-tached homes at Pine Ridge Estates. They are also planning on building eight more freehold semi-detached homes in their new “Lion’s
Court” development on St. George and Alma Streets, close to downtown on the old Lion’s club tennis courts site near the Port Dover Community Centre and the brand new Port Dover library.

In its 174th year, and the fourth largest fair in Ontario, with over 120,000 visitors each year. the fair features agricultural displays, craft exhibits, food vendors, art demonstrations, talent competitions, midway rides, and celebrity chefs.
Each year, star performers entertain at the grandstand.
Enjoy a excitement-filled fair day where clouds of pink candy floss can stick to your fingers and the showmen beckon you to win the “doggee-doggee”! Where the carousels spin round and round, lights flash and the music plays on. All of this is at the Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show in Simcoe, Ontario.
But if you’ve ever been to Ontario’s oldest agricultural fair, you also know why it deserves to be ranked among the province’s top fairs each year.
Listen carefully and you might hear the bleat of baby lamb, all part of the menagerie of livestock that tweak the cu-riosity of urban dwellers and undergo the scrutiny of those who know a champion when they see one. Listen carefully too for the sound of jingle bells. Wait a minute and a majestic team of horses will appear, outfitted in finery fit for a king! Add light harness racing, open western horse show, antique buggy classes, pony classes and jumpers to the mix you’ve got the largest outdoor horse show in Canada!
Ther grandstand features some extraordinary Canadian talent along with perennial fair favourites such as demoli-tion derbies, monster truck shows, tractor pulls and more. The educational programs attract students from near and far as they learn more about our food chain. All attractions and shows are included in admission to the fair.

Over ten years ago, Eggink Homes Inc. began development along the town’s northern edge, initially building new homes on 52 lots in Inglewood Estates’ on the east side of Cockshutt Road.
With the success of that devel-opment, in 2005 the family-owned business under the guidance of President George Eggink, began construction of Silver Lake Estates’ located on the west side of Cockshutt Road. Two phases later, 62 homes have been completed (21 in Phase 1 and 41 in Phase 2). Construction is nearing completion in phase III. Eggink Homes is anticipating the opening of Phase IV this fall.
The company, which also includes George’s wife Betty and their son Tyler, will have 108 lots in this and subsequent phases over the next few years. New model homes currently located on Mulberry Lane, feature architectural designs and plans for houses that can be built on sites in Phase 3. The model home can be visited on Saturday and Sunday, from 2 to 4 p.m. or by appointment.
The 39-year-old company credits
its success on the fact that strong personal relationships on a business level are developed with clients, who can also expect the highest quality construction for custom-built homes, from the design stages through to the finishing touches.
All home designs offered in Silver Lake Estates’ are for single family bungalows. Interior features include the installation of Heat Recovery Ventilating systems in
every home, 8 foot and 9 foot ceilings, open concept, interior columns, tray ceilings, and window transoms. Port Dover Maple Leaf is the com-munity’s newspaper. The paper has published since 1873 with the people and events of this town that have always been the paper’s focus.
There have been a lot of changes in the community over the years. But some things have remained constant -- the community-minded spirit of Port Dover citizens and The Maple Leaf ’s desire to publish a newspaper that reflects the community.
Credit for establishing The Maple Leaf goes to Mr. E. D. Passmore. After chronicling the local news for nine years he sold the newspaper in 1882 to Llewelyn G. Morgan, a former high school teacher.
Sam H. Morris, a printer and reporter on staff, succeeded Publisher
Morgan on Friday, February 13, 1920. His employment at the newspaper had been in-terrupted by World War One when he enlisted in Norfolk’s own battalion, the 133rd, and saw action in Europe. Shortly after his return to Port Dover, he purchased the business. Sam remained active at the paper for the next fifty years.
The company’s operation was headed by sons F. G. Archie Morris and then Stan Morris -- who remains involved with the paper to this day after over 60 years at The Maple Leaf -- and now by his son Paul Morris.
The Maple Leaf has been located at the same downtown Port Dover location for over a century. Today, with
a dedicated, talent-ed and knowledgeable staff, the paper produces both print and electronic editions each week, produces special publications, maintains a website and does commercial printing.
But one thing remains the same. The Maple Leaf still cares about and reports on the people and events im-portant to Port Dover residents.

Helen Wilson always enjoyed visiting Port Dover, basking in the area’s relaxed, small town charm. So when the retired educator dis-covered Dover Coast, a new active-adult lifestyle community on the shores of Lake Erie, she knew she had found the perfect spot to start a new chapter in her life.
“There’s just a wonderful spirit here,” says Wilson, who moved to Dover Coast a year ago. “We all enjoy each other’s company.”
Located 90-minutes from the GTA, the 500-acre resort-style community will feature enclaves of Cape Cod-style bungalows, detached and townhomes around a links-style 18-hole golf course. Nine holes will be ready for play spring 2015. Overlooking the course’s 15th hole will be a private clubhouse with indoor/outdoor
pool, gym, party room and much more.
Dover Coast is in the first phase of a development that includes townhomes that range from 1250 square feet to 1547 square feet and detached bun-galows from 1200 square feet to 2442 square feet. Prices start at $263,900.00. All exterior main-tenance is handled by property management. “So it’s carefree living,” Wilson says.
The community’s centre of activity is David’s Restaurant owned by the development. With a lakefront setting, David’s boast three floors of fun; a restaurant, Elements Day Spa and the Double Olive with a renowned martini menu. Residents have member-ship with discounts at all three. Work is just about to begin on the
private deck on the lake. A leash-free dog zone is up and running and the pickle ball courts will be completed this summer!
To become part of this one-of-a-kind community, visit the Dover Coast Sales and Presentation Centre at 165 New Lakeshore Road in Port Dover. Models are avail-able to view and a new stunning 1400 sq. foot detached model will be ready soon. The office is open seven days a week from 12:00-5:00 for your convenience.

Explore the 10 kilometreLynn Valley Trail between Port Dover and Simcoe The Lynn Valley Trail is located on the former CNR rail line which was estab-lished in 1873 and abandoned in 1988.
The rail line was purchased as a potential utilities corridor by the municipality in 1991. The 10 km trail connects Simcoe and Port Dover.
The Lynn Valley Trail starts at Silver Lake Park in Port Dover and passes through a number of different habitats including mixed woods, wetlands, open grassland and agricultural land, all along the scenic Lynn River on the route to Simcoe.
Interesting examples of Carolinian flora and fauna may be found along the trail.
The Lynn Valley Trail Association has done extensive work on the rail-trail
since its establishment in 1993. There are four original trestle bridges which have been reinforced and decking and railings built. The addition of benches, picnic tables, a portable washroom, fencing and signage have made the trail comfortable for walking, hiking, cycling or nature study.

The beach
and the bikes
Of course it’s not always busy in Port Dover. But, weekends in the summer can see a lot of visitors, especially if the weather is sunny and hot. On those days, like the photo above, the beach can be a very popular spot. But visitors who come to the beach on a weekday will see much smaller crowds with room to spread out. Only a small por-tion of the beach is publically owned by Norfolk County. The rest of the beach is privately owned but has been open to beach goers for generations.Another busy day in Port Dover is every Friday the 13th. In 2014 there is only one Friday the 13th-- in June-- and thousands of people travelled by motor-cycle to the largest motorcycle rally in Canada. As well, tens of thousands of people visited to see the motorcylces. It is an event like nothing else. In 2015, there are Friday the 13th in February, March and November.
Explore Harbour Museum Port Dover has a long and colourful history. Bring some of the commu-nity’s marine history alive with a visit to the Port Dover Harbour Museum. Explore the displays and learn about the town’s past. It is a great place to visit and is open daily year-round with extended hours in the summer months. Admission is by donation to the museum. The converted fish-ermen’s shanty along with a large addition is located beside the water at 44 Harbour Street.
In the 1920s, the Nicholson Erie-Dover Ferry Line crossed Lake Erie with cars and passengers for the trip between Erie, PA and Port Dover. Cars coming off a ferry are lined up in photo above.
