Dear friends of Jesus and Brendan,

Happy Labor Day weekend! Where did the summer go! We come to this special weekend when hopefully all of us pause to remember workers across our country and around the world. We pray that everyone will be able to find a dignified job to support themselves and their families. We pray in a special way those unemployed at this time and we remember what labor unions at their best have done for the cause of workers.

This weekend we offer a special welcome to Msgr. Alfred Libwa, a priest from Africa. We hope that he enjoys the month of September with us. We appreciate his presence.

Also this weekend we offer a special welcome to our new Director of Music Ministry, Luc Dorsinville. Luc comes to us after having spent a number of years at St. Jude parish in Canarsie as well as a number of other parishes around the diocese. We look forward to his joyful presence and we pray he will be able to help grow the choir, the young people’s music program and the participation of everyone in the singing at Mass. We wish him many happy years here at St. Brendan.

We also celebrate the beginning of Youth Ministry here at St. Brendan. Through a generous grant from the diocese we are able to welcome Alex DeMarchena, who has been a Sunday School and Confirmation teacher here at St. Brendan for the past 2 years, as our new part-time Youth Minister. We invite all of our high school students and confirmation candidates to join us at the 5 pm Mass each Saturday followed by a special youth activity in the Clonfert Center after Mass. We invite all teens to a pizza party after Mass on Sept. 9th.

As September begins, we prepare for a new season of pastoral service and activities. We hope everyone in the parish will be more involved in life at St. Brendan. We have a wide variety of activities. We hope there is something for you.

This Friday, September 8, is the Feast of the Birthday of Our Blessed Mother. There will be a special Mass to honor Mary at 7:30 pm in the Church. Please join us.

Thursday, September 14, is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. We invite everyone to join us at 7 pm in the courtyard for the blessing of crosses and crucifixes. We invite you to bring any crosses or crucifixes you have in your home for a special blessing. After the blessing, we invite you to join us for a procession into the church to celebrate Mass for the Feast Day.

Peace and blessings, Father Peter

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord! Joshua 24.15

Please join us for a special Mass to honor the Birthday of Our Blessed Mother on Friday, September 8th at 7:30 pm in the Church.

A VOCATION PRAYER Gracious and loving God, help the men and women of our parish hear

the call to serve in the Diocese of Brooklyn.

Our needs are great and our people thirst for Your presence.

Open our hearts, raise up faithful servants of the Gospel, dedicated, holy priests,

sisters, brothers and deacons, who will spend themselves for Your people and their needs.

Bless those who are serving now with courage and perseverance.

Grant that many will be inspired by their example and faith.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Please join us next Thursday, Sept. 14th, for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. We will meet in the courtyard at 7 pm for the blessing of crosses and crucifixes followed by a procession into Church for Mass for the Feast Day. We invite everyone to bring their crosses and crucifixes for this special blessing.

Make a Holy Hour.

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

We are always in need of more volunteers to spend time with Jesus during Eucharistic Adoration each week. We invite all adorers to sign the adoration book inside the Chapel entrance. If everyone would come for

even one half hour of adoration each week we would be able to expand the hours of adoration from 9-4 pm Monday to Saturday and until 7 pm on Friday evenings. Jesus is waiting. Miracles happen.

Saint Brendan Vocation Committee! Bishop DiMarzio has proclaimed a special YEAR OF VOCATIONS beginning on August 4th, the Feast of Saint John Vianney.

In preparation for this special year, we need to form a Parish Vocations Committee to pray for, promote, identi-fy, and encourage young people to consider a vocation to the priesthood, diaconate, or consecrated life. We need to form a team willing to encourage daily prayer for vocations, make materials available and encourage our young people to ask themselves if they think God might be calling them to a life of service in the church. God never stops calling, we need to learn to listen…

Throughout the Year of Vocations, our statue of St. John Vianney will be in the chapel as a reminder for all of us to pray for an increase in vocations to the priest-hood, diaconate and the religious life for our diocese and from our parish.

Beginning Sunday, October 1, we will have two icons of St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests at Mass. Each week we will invite someone from the Spanish speaking community and English speaking community to take the icons home and promise to pray for vocations with their family and friends throughout the week. The icons will be returned to the rectory the following Saturday. There will be a sign up sheet in the rectory if you would like to participate in this beautiful prayer for vocations.

AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED)

Thank you to all who contributed to the Men’s Prayer Group Fundraising effort to purchase an AED. A total of $1,668 was raised through your generosity.

The AED machine will be purchased sometime within the next month.

Boy Scout Meet & Greet

Come and meet the Leaders and Scouts of our scouting programs on Friday, Sept. 15th at 8PM in the school auditorium. Find out about our Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs. All boys ages 6 through 18 can join and are welcomed. Pick up a schedule of events at this meeting.

ATTENTION YOUNG PEOPLE!

On Saturday, September 9th we will be beginning our Youth Ministry here at St. Brendan. We invite all young people in 8th grade and High School to join us

for the 5 pm Mass on that day. After Mass we will have pizza and our first meeting as a Youth Group in the Clonfert Center . We hope to see everyone there.

Please contact Alex in the rectory if you have any questions.

www. invisiblemonastery.com Our Goal is Continuous Prayer for Vocations.

Invisible Monastery is a free web site that helps organize prayer for vocations. Our goal is to attract enough members to pray for vocations 24 hours a day in every diocese. Members of Invisible Monastery: • Pledge to pray daily or weekly for vocations • Choose their type of prayer-Mass intention, rosary, private prayer, etc. • Renew their pledge annually • Receive a quarterly e-newsletter with prayers,

resources, and ideas for promoting vocations • May receive occasional communication from the diocesan Vocation Director with prayer requests or other information.

CATECHISTS NEEDED We still need a few generous parishioners to become Catechists in

our Religious Education Program. We have a special need for volunteers to work both for our Sunday school classes and for the Thursday night Confirmation program. We offer free ongoing and professional training. As a Catechist, you will discover that prayer, liturgy and your own relationship with God will become more vibrant and meaningful. If you are interested please call Fr. Peter or Carmina De La Rosa.
