Welcome to Saskatoon
Integrity Excellence Responsibility
Saskatoon is no longer a sleepy prairie town. If it ever was.
With a booming economy and a desirable quality of living, the city is proving that it is the place to be.
A GROWING METROPOLIS
Saskatoon is Saskatchewan’s largest city,
and was recently chosen as one of the 10
best midsized Canadian cities in which to
live, not only for its escalating economic
strength but for its quality of life. Photo: Tourism Saskatoon

Saskatoon’s population is approximately 254,000 (June 2014), a number which continues to
grow. The city is also home to a young population, with an average age of 35 years.
According to the
Conference Board of
Canada, Saskatoon will
have the fastest economic
growth rate in the country
through 2017. This
prediction is the result of
the city’s stable economy
and thriving job market.
The Canadian Federation
of Independent Business
recognizes Saskatoon as
the most business-friendly
city in Canada.
Saskatoon boasts the lowest unemployment rate in Canada.

Saskatoon is situated on
the banks of the South
Saskatchewan River, with
several bridges linking east
to west. The city has nearly
200 parks and hundreds of
acres of green space. A
sprawling trail system
follows the riverbank and
hums with activity
throughout the year. It’s no
wonder why the city was
rated number one in
Canada for air and water
quality by Chatelaine
magazine.
Saskatoon is one of the sunniest cities in Canada, receiving an
average of 2,381 hours annually.

--Housing costs are low in
Saskatchewan compared to other
Canadian regions. Owning a home is
affordable and achievable for most
people.
--There are no personal premiums or
personal charges for basic and
needed health services in
Saskatchewan. The Saskatoon
Health Region operates three
hospitals within city limits.
--It costs less to get to and from work
because the average commute time
is approximately 20 minutes.
Saskatchewan's quality of life is high, while the cost of living is low. That makes the
province a great place to live and raise a family, and a great place to locate or invest in a
business.

Saskatoon is home to
excellent educational
institutions including both
public and Catholic school
divisions, a world-class
university, and several
post-secondary technical
colleges.
The University of
Saskatchewan, located just
across the river from
downtown Saskatoon, is
the only university in
Canada to house all five
health science colleges
and a major teaching
hospital on the same
campus.

Saskatoon has a menu to serve any
appetite. With more independent
restaurants per capita than any other
city in Canada, residents and visitors
can take their pick of major chains,
locally-inspired dining, ethnic cuisine,
or grab-and-go establishments.

With one of the most diverse economies in
Canada, Saskatoon’s growth in a number of
sectors has been consistent with high levels of
employment in industries including agriculture,
mining, biotechnology and construction.
Agriculture has historically played a key role in
Saskatchewan’s economy. The province
produces half of Canada’s major export crops
and crop receipts have reached a record high
of over $30 billion.
Saskatchewan’s mining industry has kept the
provincial economy strong. The province is Canada’s
only producer of uranium and the world’s largest
exporter of uranium. One third of the world’s potash
is produced and exported by Canada, with most
production coming from Saskatchewan. Other
mining operations include – but are not limited
to – diamonds, gold, platinum, and zinc.
Other sectors that have experienced significant
growth in Saskatchewan include biotechnology, oil
and gas, and retail.

Strong growth in housing starts and home
ownership are indicators of a healthy growing
economy, and Saskatoon has invested heavily in
the municipal housing market.
Incentives such as Saskatoon’s Housing
Business Plan incorporate measures directed
toward housing options in variety and
availability, with particular focus on affordable
housing.
Other programs include Habitat for Humanity’s
Equity Building Program and the Affordable New
Home Development Foundation.

According to the Canadian Federation of
Independent Business, Saskatoon merits
being known as the Entrepreneurial Capital
of Canada.
Both small and large companies are
viewing Saskatoon as the place to do
business. With a median age of 35,
young entrepreneurs are attracted by
the city’s great resources for business
start up.
Small business in Saskatchewan
represents over 90 percent of non-
agricultural private firms, employing
more than a third of the province’s
labour force and creating the majority of
new jobs in recent years.

Saskatoon’s robust
planning for the
challenge of growth
requires forward-
thinking, ingenuity, and
innovation. Saskatoon is
prepared. The city is
busy with the
construction and
restoration of bridges,
major roads and
highways.

“Saskatchewan has a combination of employment, educational and lifestyle opportunities
that is unique and unrivalled in Canada. There is little wonder people from across Canada
and around the world are flocking to all of our cities.”
