Confessor Parish 10th—11th March 2018

4th Sunday of Lent

IT’S OUR CALL! By: Fr. Marce Singson

Our Gospel today is from John, where Jesus said to Nicodemus: “God loved

the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believed

in him may not be lost but may have eternal life.” Nicodemus, a Pharisee

and leader of the Jews who comes to Jesus by night; he recognizes Jesus as a

teacher from God (verse 1-2). Nicodemus acknowledges Jesus is sent from

God, but he comes in secret he is obtuse. Jesus chides him for his lack of

understanding. In John, some of the sharpest criticism is directed toward

those who believe, or have insight about Jesus, but keep it secret.

The single most important thing to notice about this verse is that God loved

the world. God deeply loved the world that God created, and God longs for

this creation to live. It is not only God's own people whom God will save, as

in the Numbers story. It is the cosmos that God has loved, precisely by

having given the only son,. God loved by having given the son, a

non-coercive act that sets in motion real consequences.

Yet God's action was not disinterested. The purpose of God's having sent the

Son was to save the world, just as the purpose of commanding Moses to erect

a serpent on a pole was to save the people from death. The son came to save,

to grant eternal life because God loved the world. That was Jesus' announce-

ment. I'm here because the God who loved you of old, still does. He sent me

to tell you, to show you, to gather you up into life with him forever.

Jesus' coming is like the bringing of a light into a dark space. The contrast of

light and dark is intense. Indeed, the coming of the Son into the world leads

to numerous pairs of contrasting realities:

• condemn and save

• believe and not believe

• stay in the darkness and come into the light

• do evil and doing what is true

These opposites express the sharp distinction that is created when our dark

cosmos is entered by the light of God. Like the people in the story in

Numbers, we have already been bitten or are in imminent danger of being

bitten. Death is inevitable. When the bronze serpent is brought into the

world, we look and

live, or we do not.

As Jesus comes into

the world, we trust

that which bears

God's gracious love,

or we do not. We

receive eternal life

or we continue to

live apart from God,

condemned.

It’s our call!

Representative

We visit many families each year, listen to their

stories and endeavour to meet their

immediate needs by offering material goods –

food, clothing, furniture. Many come from

violent and abusive situation and need emotional, social and

life skills help. Counselling for families is provided by the

Regional Council for those needing emotional support. For

other needs we network with other organisation – The

Logan East Community Centre in Cinderella Drive and the

Kingston East Neighbourhood Group Inc. These places

offer wonderful programs for families, children and

individuals.

We are currently working on how we can tap into the

spiritual needs of those we visit, helping them to realise that

God accepts them as they are and that He loves them

unconditionally. Our last meeting focussed on this issue

with the assistance of Sister Melissa Dwyer, our spiritual

officer, and Patrick Mac Anally, members officer. We had a

lively discussion and Sister Melissa has taken our ideas and

is going to design some cards that we can talk to, and leave

with those we visit. We ask your prayers for our conference

and for all those we visit.

We can use your postage stamps from

your mail The Salesian Missions use the old stamps that are passed on to

them to raise funds. This goes towards Salesian Education and

relief work in developing nations. We have placed a collection

Invitation to Mass at Yurana Nursing Home

Yurana Nursing Home is situated in Dennis Road,

Springwood. It has a small community of Catholics and

together with Father Marce and some Parishioners and friends

of St Edwards, we celebrate Mass on the first Tuesday of

each month. The Mass starts at 9.00am and is held in the

common room just inside the entrance of Yurana. It is always

a peaceful and personal Mass, which we all enjoy very much.

We would like to invite more parishioners to come to this

Mass and join our small group. I know the residents of

Yurana look forward to this time with Father and parish

members and friends. The Next Mass will be held on

Tuesday 03rd April. All Welcome.
