St. Francis Borgia, Washington, MO #242400

Prayer Before Mass

Come Holy Spirit and quiet my heart and my head, as I gather with my friends and neighbors to celebrate Mass. I am saint and sinner. Open my ears to Your words. Open my mouth in prayer and song. Open my eyes

to see Your mystery in symbol and sign. Open my heart in love for You and my neighbor. Quiet the thoughts and dis-trac ons that will keep me from prayer. Strengthen me to take the Mass into my life this week. Amen.

Come Spend An Hour With Me

Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesday

after 7:00 am Mass till Wednesday at 6:45 am

Notes from Fr. Joe Wormek

I want to acknowledge the amazing generosity

(over $8,000) from our community for the peo-

ple who were affected by the Hurricane Har-

vey. This weekend we are also le ng you know

that there is another need for the people affected by Hurri-

cane Irma. We will take up a second collec on next weekend.

I am so grateful that our parish had the opportunity to

gather and work together as a family at the Fall Fes val. It’s

true that it is a great source of fund-raising for the parish, but

it is more important for us to also have fun together. I want

to thank our chairs for the event, Tim and Sco e Eagan,

along with Adam and Ka e Piontek who were in training as

next year’s chairs. They gave us a great example of how to be

involved in our parish. There are so many other people who I

should thank, but I would probably leave someone out be-

cause there were so many posi ons and so many people who

took responsibility to lead, not to forget the hundreds of peo-

ple who also worked and supported the Fall Fes val.

It is so easy to measure the success of a parish event by the

financial aspect. But what the Fall Fes val and other parish

events like the Sausage Dinner, parish breakfasts, Fi h Friday

Dinners, cra er events, church ministries, quil ng, Encore,

tents, Monday and Thursday men volunteer group, cemetery,

Vaca on Bible School, RCIA, prayer groups, soup nights, La-

dies Sodality, church cleaners, rummage sale, food pantry,

sports teams, scou ng or one our many parish ministries. It is

an opportunity for us to gather and build community which

we then celebrate by our ac ve and full par cipa on in the

daily and weekend Masses.

We need both aspects of our lives, worship and involve-

ment, for us to be a disciple of Christ. They go hand in hand,

so that what we do in church is brought forth in the market

place and what is in the market place is brought to the altar.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Joe Wormek

Eucharis c Adora on There is a dedicated group of men and women currently staffing 24-hour adora on in our church from 7:30 am Tuesday un l 6:45 am Wednesday. Occasionally a person is una-ble to be present for their assigned hour. It would be a big help if a small group of people

could have their name and phone number on a “stand-by list” to help them out by being available when they are unable to a end. There is a double bonus a ached to this ministry. First, you are partaking in an act of charity. Sec-ond, you are making yourself available to spend one-on-one me with Our Lord. It’s definitely a win-win situa on. Please contact Deacon Leon at 636-221-1531 for more informa on.

Cemetery Commission The Cemetery Commission is looking for a few new members. They meet twice a year. They discuss policies and procedures of the cemetery. They also make decisions regarding the gen-eral opera on of the Cemetery. If interested or for more infor-ma on contact the parish office (636-239-6701).

FORGIVENESS

Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had be er come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father mo oned his son to him and whispered: "Did you ever think you could do any-thing that would keep me from loving you?" Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop ha ng. Live by the commandments. As Saint Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord. Jesus' parable in today's Gospel reminds us of God's com-passion. The immense sin of humanity has been forgiven and stricken from the record. We are to forgive others in the same way.

Stewardship Reflection “For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the

Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s” - ROMANS 14:8

This is the essence of stewardship – everything we have and everything we are is a gi from God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gi s that God has given us, especially our very own lives. Pray to God, daily, and ask Him how He wants you to use the gi s He has given you.

Statement Following Hurricane Irma ST. LOUIS – Archbishop Robert J. Carlson issued the following statement in response to the devasta on in Florida and else-where due to Hurricane Irma: It is upse ng to see images of destruc on from yet anoth-er violent hurricane on our shores and beyond. As I said a er Hurricane Harvey, I know I speak for every person in the Arch-diocese of St. Louis when I say how deeply saddened I am by the death and massive devasta on experienced by our broth-ers and sisters in the South and throughout the Caribbean. It is difficult to comprehend how something so terrible can hap-pen on such a scale. Now, more than ever, we must look to our faith and ask the Lord to carry those who are suffering and who have lost so much. The nearly 200 parishes in 11 coun es of the Archdiocese of St. Louis held a second collec on for hurricane relief the first two weekends of September. I have again requested our parishes take up another collec on for new relief efforts. One-hundred percent of the funds raised go directly to relief efforts via Catholic Chari es of St. Louis. A er Hurricane Harvey, I celebrated Mass for those who have suffered due to the storm, and will do so again for the vic ms of Hurricane Irma. I ask you to please join your prayer to mine for our brothers and sisters who must now rebuild their lives. A er your prayer, please consider how you might be able to provide assistance. Dona ons can be made to Catholic Chari es of St. Louis and mailed to: P.O. Box 952393, St. Louis, MO 63195-2393 (be sure to note Hurricane Harvey 2017 or Hurricane Irma 2017). There will be a second collec on during the Masses next weekend (September 23 & 24). You may also drop cash or a check by the parish office. Make the checks payable to St. Francis Borgia Church and we will write one check to Catholic Chari es.

The WPD supports our efforts to keep our students safe! You are invited to join us in our effort to raise money in support of those affected by Hurricane Harvey. We will be partnering with a Catholic School in Texas that needs our help. As we learn more about relief efforts in Florida, we will reach out to the Archdiocese there. Our students will use technology to communicate with them and pray to-gether. Please send contribu ons in the form of checks (wri en to SFBGS Hurricane Relief Efforts on the subject line), or cash in sealed labeled envelopes (Hurricane Relief Efforts). Gi s will be distributed directly to the school in order to: help families with tui on assistance so that fami-lies can focus on recovery and schools can con nue to pay their employees (many of whom also suffered losses). Serve the immediate needs of school families by providing
