Welcome to St Margaret’s Church Ifield Loved as you are

Sunday 20th May 2018

Pentecost

All are welcome to St Margaret’s and we encourage all to take part fully in this service. If you have mobility issues that make it difficult for you to take part in today’s service then do please notify our sides-people and they will

gladly help you . Please do stay for coffee served at the back of church after the service.

There is a toilet at the back of church should you need to use it during the service.

THE GATHERING Choir Introit – Allelulia by William Boyce Leader: Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the

Lord Jesus Christ be with you All: and also with you Leader: Allelulia. Christ is risen. All: He is risen indeed. Alleluia.

THE WELCOME Welcome to our worship on this day of Pentecost, and at

the end of a week of Prayer entitled Thy Kingdom Come. Started by the Archbishops in 2016, Thy Kingdom Come has grown into a global prayer movement, inviting Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus. And so let’s hear from the Archbishop of Canterbury himself why we should pray ‘Thy Kingdom Come’.

‘Accept one another, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

And so as the Archbishop encourages us, we pray together:

All: Almighty God, your ascended Son has sent us into the world to preach the good news of your kingdom: inspire us with your Spirit and fill our hearts with the fire of your love, that all who hear your Word may be drawn to you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn 120: Discendi, amor santo. Copyright © Oxford University Press.

COME DOWN, O LOVE DIVINE, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing; true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

‘Accept one another, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the pow’r of human telling; nor can guess its grace, till we become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.

Light of the world

You stepped down into darkness Opened my eyes let me see Beauty that made this heart adore You Hope of a life spent with You

All: Here I am to worship

Here I am to bow down Here I am to say that You're my God

You're altogether lovely Altogether worthy Altogether wonderful to me

King of all days

Oh so highly exalted Glorious in heaven above Humbly You came to the earth You created All for love's sake became poor

All: Here I am to worship…

‘Accept one another, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

I'll never know how much it cost To see my sin upon that cross I'll never know how much it cost To see my sin upon that cross All: Here I am to worship…

THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Leader: Jesus Christ, whom we worship, is our crucified, risen and ascended Lord. And we have walked with him through his journey of love. We have faced the agony of his suffering and death on a cross. We have rejoiced at his bursting free from the bonds of death.

We have enjoyed his risen presence with us and his revelation of himself through the breaking of bread.

We have seen his return to the throne before which every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that this Jesus is Lord.

And now, with the followers of his own time, we await the coming of the promised Holy Spirit, his gift to his people, through whom we make Christ known to the world.

RESPONSORY

Leader: As we wait in silence, All: fill us with your Spirit. As we listen to your word, fill us with your Spirit.

‘Accept one another, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

As we worship you in majesty, fill us with your Spirit. As we long for your refreshing, fill us with your Spirit. As we long for your renewing, fill us with your Spirit. As we long for your equipping, fill us with your Spirit. As we long for your empowering, fill us with your Spirit. Praying for people to encounter the Spirit of God changes lives as the

Archbishop of Canterbury tells us in this next video clip:

PRAYERS OF PENITENCE Leader: What keeps our lives from being changed into what God

would have them be? In a moment’s silence we bring into our hearts and minds all that keep us from becoming ‘Thy Kingdom’s Come’ people.

And so we pray together: All: Lord God,we have sinned against you; we have done

evil in your sight. We are sorry and repent. Have mercy upon us according to your love; Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin. Renew a right spirit within us and restore us to the joy of your salvation: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

‘Accept one another, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

Leader May the God of love bring us back to himself, forgive us

our sins, and assure us of his eternal love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SONG

THE TALK (PART 2) Introduction to Prayer Stations

THE PRAYER STATIONS

Offertory Hymn During the singing of this hymn a collection is taken:

Hymn 87: Edwin Hatch.

BREATHE ON ME, BREATH OF GOD, fill me with life anew, that I may love, so I may love, and do what you would do.

‘Accept one another, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure: until my will is one with yours to do and to endure. Breathe on me, Breath of God, fulfil my heart’s desire, until this earthly part of me glows with your heav’nly fire. Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die, but live with you the perfect life of your eternity. As the collection is brought to the front of church the following prayer is said:

Leader: Generous God, creator, redeemer, sustainer, at your table we present this money, symbol of the work you have given us to do; use it, use us, in the service of your world to the glory of your name. Amen.

‘Accept one another, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Leader: As our Saviour taught us, so we pray in faith:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

THE PENTECOST COMMISSION Celebrant For fifty days we have celebrated the victory of our

Lord Jesus Christ over the powers of sin and death. We have proclaimed God’s mighty acts and we have prayed that the power that was at work when God raised Jesus from the dead might be at work in us.

As part of God’s Church, I call upon you to live out what you proclaim.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, will you dare to walk

into God’s future, trusting him to be your guide? All By the Spirit’s power, we will.

‘Accept one another, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

Celebrant Will you dare to embrace each other and grow together in love?

All We will. Celebrant Will you dare to share your riches in common and

minister to each other in need? All We will. Celebrant Will you dare to pray for each other until your hearts

beat with the longings of God? All We will. Celebrant Will you dare to carry the light of Christ into the world‘s

dark places? All We will.

THE BLESSING

Celebrant The Spirit of truth lead you into all truth, give you grace to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and strengthen you to proclaim the word and works of God; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.

All Amen.

THE DISMISSAL Celebrant We go into the world to walk in God’s light, to rejoice in God’s love, and to reflect God’s glory. Go in the peace of Christ. Alleluia, Alleluia.

All Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia.

‘Accept one another, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

Hymn 479: Graham Kendrick. Copyright © 1987 Make Way Music.

LORD THE LIGHT OF YOUR LOVE is shining, in the midst of the darkness, shining; Jesus, Light the World, shine upon us, set us free by the truth you now bring us. Shine on me, shine on me.

Shine Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory; blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire. Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy; send forth your word, Lord and let there be light.

Lord, I come to your awesome presence, from the shadows into your radiance; by the blood I may enter your brightness, search me, try me, consume all my darkness. Shine on me, shine on me.

As we gaze on your kingly brightness, so our faces display your likeness, ever changing from glory to glory; mirrored here may our lives tell your story. Shine on me, shine on me.

£10700

Expenditure

£10985

Deficit £285

Expenditure rose by £1444 but the increase was mostly offset by

Gift Aid from HMRC, and an increase in income from the Parish

A very big thank you from the Mayfayre Committee to everyone who helped in any way to make this year’s Mayfayre a great success. The weather was with us and a good time was had by all - even clearing up after the event was a jollier affair than last year’s soggy experience! Takings on the day were up on last year but there are expenses yet to be paid before final figures are known. A

breakdown for each stall will be displayed in the porch when available. Please do read the latest newsletter from our CMS Mission Partner

Ruth Hulser. After 14 years of working in Tanzania Ruth has

decided to return to the UK on a permanent basis which means

that she will no longer be our Mission Partner. Ruth has done such

a wonderful job that the health centre she set up is now self-

sufficient and will continue to run without her and with support

from inside Tanzania. We hope to have Ruth come and speak to us

about her work and to enable her to thank you for all the

wonderful support you have given over the years. In the meantime

we are in discussions with CMS about other Mission Partners that

we may be able to support now that Ruth has ‘retired’ – more

news on this later in the year.
