You're invited to join us on a journey of hope, healing, creativity and community -- an eight night retreat in northern Ireland, diving into storytelling, landscape, creativity and the common good. Go to www.irelandretreats.com for all the details, or read on to learn more. Staying in historic restored accommodation including cottages in ex-quisite natural surroundings, with a group of friends old and new, enjoying the Mourne Mountains, Giant's Causeway and Belfast area coastal paths on amazing walks, hearing music, poetry and story, meeting locals, experiencing the peace process in encountering people directly involved in activism and change, and getting to know the cul-ture of northern Ireland, immersed in Celtic culture ancient and new. Good food, inspiring art, and beautiful journeys on foot will form the

heart of this soulfully unique and trans-forming experience. Led by warm-hearted and thoughtful guide northern Irish writer and peace activist Gareth Higgins, and featuring guests such as beloved au-thor Kathleen Norris and Americana singer-songwriter David Wilcox, this will

be an eight day experience, for around 25 guests only, that might just last for the rest of your life. Journey with a small group of new friends in the north of Ireland, among people seeking space, rest, challenge and clarity for the next steps in life. Our retreats are led by writers, musicians, and other artists; guides who have been immersed in spiritual reflection, peacemaking, and imagining a better world. Experience the extraordi-nary physical landscape, hear from poets and historians, learn from people who made peace with each other after a centuries-old conflict, and go on an inner personal journey that might last a lifetime. All the information you need to join us is at www.irelandretreats.com, and we'd love to hear from you.

Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, & put your trust in the LORD.

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus sets before us a parable sketched from life. A persistent widow importunes an uncooperative judge until she obtains satisfaction. From this account, let us not conclude that the way to pray to God is to bore him to death or to drive him crazy. Only the Gentiles imagine imagine that they will succeed in getting an answer by dint of words (Matt 6:7). This gospel demonstrates in a remarkable way the danger of interpreting parables as allegory. In an allegory, every element has another dimension of meaning. A parable works as a whole to make a single point or to raise a disturbing question. In this parable it would be a mistake to equate the woman’s obstinate pleading with a superstitious attempt to pry an answer from God. Jesus’ parable is set under the heading of perse-vering prayer. It calls Christians to unceasing vigi-lance. Prayer is less an act which forces God’s hand, but much more one which opens us to the al-ways available gifts of God.

Our extreme gratitude to our faithful parishioners, M/M Eloy and Sadie Ortega from Ortega’s Propane for their always most generous donation of propane used during our annual Fiestas. May God’s peace and blessings be upon you Sadie and Eloy and your family for your ever faithfulness and generosity to our Lord, His Church and

our Parish of Saint Therese of the Infant Jesus.

Parish Fiestas of Saint Therese

A great Shout Out to all who worked so hard this past year to plan and implement and operated booths and co-ordinated various levels of our Annual Fiestas. A report of financials will be forthcoming. As usual our Fiestas are a favorite in the city—the second largest parish fies-tas in size and scope—reminding folks of old time Fiesta Celebrations—lovely almost perfect weather this time of the year—a close and safe environment of the Fiesta Grounds—and most dedicated parishioners/workers, sup-porters and revelers. To the music groups who donate their time to play at the Fiestas our gratitude and bless-ings. Ten Thousand Blessings and Roses from Saint Thérèse be upon all of us! Of course there were small incidents. . .folks passing off tan/golden colored and clearly marked San Felipe de Neri Fiesta Tokens (such depravity! Some people are just pieces of work, eh?) and our own booth workers who seemingly cannot tell the difference between a dark blue clearly indicated Saint Therese Parish Token and a tan/golden colored clearly marked San Felipe de Neri Parish Token. And the depraved passing off counterfeit hundred dollar notes. Despite these hiccups they were a great celebration. And proceeds allow us immediately to pay our Property Insurance Coverage and Subsidies to the various Catholic Schools where parishioners have their children, their most valuable and precious treas-ures. God’s peace and blessings be upon us all and for the depraved that need to cheat in various ways—well, may Jesus himself the Good Shepherd go after them and heal them in whatever ways they require. Father Vincent

A Meditative Writing Retreat October 26 9am-4pm

• Register by Oct. 21With Meg Ashcroft at Santa Maria de la Vid (Norbertine) Abbey, 5825 Coors Blvd. SW, Abq. Ordinary people in the New Testament are routinely referred to as “holy ones.” We know that these early Chris-tians were far from perfect, as St. Paul often addressed letters to them about their faults! Jesus himself constantly interacted with individuals who could not be mistaken for saints. Still there’s no denying that we are all called to holiness because we are all made in the image and likeness of the Holy One. This meditative writing retreat will explore what various peo-ple have to say about holiness, and help us see how each of us walks a unique path of holiness in our everyday lives. $55, in-cludes lunch. All are welcome to participate—no writing experience is necessary. Please register by Monday, Oct. 21, by calling 505-873-4399 or emailing [email protected]
