Invitations have been mailed to servers. All others can sign up using the sheets at the entrances to ALL the churches. Our region will furnish the meat, buns and drinks. We ask each family to bring a side to share. Water balloons, corn hole, volleyball and other games with prizes are planned. If there is enough interest, there will be softball. MEET ST. KATERI TEKAKWITHABorn in about 1656 in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon in New York. Her parents were a Mohawk chief and Tagaskouita, a Christian Algonquin woman captured in a raid. Tekakwitha died at age 24 in 1680 in Montreal, Canada.MISSION: “For a long time my decision has been made. I have chosen Jesus for my husband and he alone will take me for wife.”STORY: Growing up, Tekakwitha was the girl who didn’t quite fit in. The same smallpox that had taken the lives of her parents and brother when she was four years old had left her face badly scarred and sallow. It also badly damaged her eyes. The name Tekakwitha means “she who bumps into things.” So although she was good at weaving and enjoyed playing with her cornhusk dolls, her poor eyesight made it difficult to plant and weed, and impossible to play chasing games with the other children.As she grew older, she became more and more interested in her mother’s religion. French Jesuit missionaries –
”Blackrobes,” as the Mohawks called them – traveled among the villages of the Iroquois Confederacy, teaching the people about Christ. Eventually, Tekakwitha asked one of these priests to teach her and baptize her into the faith. She took the name Catherine – or, as the Mohawk said, ”Kateri.”Tekakwitha’s interest in Christianity annoyed her uncle, but it was her refusal to marry that scandalized her relatives the most. When Kateri refused the marriage proposal of a young warrior to his face in front of his family, it was the last straw. Her relatives mocked her, calling her names and giving her all the hardest work. Not long after this, she left the village in a daring escape, traveling with the help of two Huron warriors nearly two hundred miles to a village of Christian Mohawks. There, at last, she fit in.When she died of an illness four years later, her last words were, “Jesus, Mary, I love you.” Fifteen minutes after her death, her face was transformed – no longer scarred, but radiant, an outward sign to all who knew and loved her that she had finally found a true home in heaven.

CCDOn December 9, 1531, a 57-year-old Aztec, Juan Diego, saw the Blessed Mother on a hill in Mexico City. She told Juan to have a church built in her honor. When Juan went to ask Bishop Zumarraga about this, the bishop did not understand the Indian dialect—and he did not believe in the vision Juan described.Three days later, on December 12, Mary appeared again to Juan Diego, and this time she gave him a sign for the bishop. “Take these roses to the bishop,” she said, as she arranged in his cloak beautiful roses she had Juan Diego pick from the hillside although it was winter. When he was admitted into the bishop’s room, Juan Diego opened his cloak, and out dropped the roses. On the cloak there remained an image of Mary as she had appeared to Juan Diego.The image of Mary on the cloak is known as Our Lady of Guadalupe for an interesting reason. On that same day, Mary appeared to Juan’s uncle and cured him, giving him a message for the bishop, saying that she would “crush the serpent’s head.” The bishop did not understand the Indians’ language. The Indian word for “crush the serpent” sounded to him like “Guadalupe,” the name of Mary’s shrine in Spain. Thinking that the Virgin wanted the new shrine to have the same name, the bishop called her Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Mary appeared to Juan Diego dressed as an Aztec woman to show her love and compassion to an oppressed group of people. Mary had heard the prayers and pain of these people, and she came to give them hope.Mary’s visit to Guadalupe is a reminder that God will remember His mercy for all people. In Mary’s song of joy, the Magnificat, she praised God because He has put down the mighty, exalted the lowly, filled the hungry, and sent the rich away empty.

YOUTH MINISTRY May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we may know what is the hope that belongs to our call. (Ephesians 1:17-18) This is the verse for today’s Gospel acclamation. Do we know the hope that belongs to our call? What is our call? One thing is for sure and we can count on that God is calling each of us to a mission and purpose in life that accomplishes and completes His perfect will. When we live out this call in the fullness of the love of God, we experience joy, contentment and peace.St. Paul’s prayer to the Ephesians is asking the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ to enlighten the eyes of our hearts in order that we see more clearly our vocation in life and how we are to live that out.In today’s culture, we tend to easily dismiss the vocation option of becoming a priest, religious, or consecrated woman or man. God may be calling us, or a child, or a family member or friend to a priestly or religious vocation. Are we listening? Are we in communication with God? Perhaps He wants to use us to encourage or communicate this possibility to another person for we all have a role to play.We are all well aware of the shortage of priests and religious. We know God is calling people to these vocations and He is calling us to enthusiastically encourage them. What we say and do and our attitudes has an impact and can make a difference.Take a moment and prayerfully reflect on the people you know, and of them who comes to mind to become a priest or religious. The next step would be to pray for that person that they discover God’s will for their lives. And then, prayerfully consider if God is moving you a step further in communicating this to them in some fashion. God oftentimes needs us to be the spiritual nudge that motivates another person in the direction of their spiritual calling. We are all God’s hands, feet and voice in a world that can close its ears and its heart to the ways of God.We pray that the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlightens the eyes of our hearts bringing about His perfect will and love to all, helping each and every one of us to take responsibility in the raising up of priests and religious in our parish communities and in our Archdiocese.

PRODUCE STAND FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE POORThe Catholic parishes of St. Nicholas, Osgood and St. Louis, North Star will be operating a produce stand for the benefit of the poor.The stand will be located on the corner of St. Rt. 705 and U.S. Rt. 127, North Star, Ohio. St. Maria’s Community Farm welcomes gardeners to donate fruits and vegetables from their gardens. The public is invited to come and offer donations for whatever they wish to take home.The produce stand is open every Saturday beginning July 10 and throughout the rest of the summer from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. All proceeds and leftover produce are given to St. Vincent Hotel in Dayton which feeds approximately 1,000 meals a day. Some of the proceeds may also be given to other area soup kitchens.

YOUTH MINISTRY Continued...High School Youth Ministry (Flashpoint): Flashpoint has concluded for the school year and will resume the first Wednesday in September.
Junior High Youth Ministry (B.L.A.S.T.): B.L.A.S.T. has concluded for the school year and will resume the first Wednesday in September.
Live to Bless: Students in grades 6-8 during the 2020-2021 school year are invited to participate in Live to Bless, a service experience in Adams County, Ohio. The event will begin with 8:00 a.m. Mass at St. Denis from which we will carpool to Our Lady of Guadalupe Discipleship Center in Peebles where we will spend the night. From there we will meet with staff from Holy Trinity parish in West Union and they will connect us with some service projects for the parish. We will work in the afternoon and the next day on Thursday morning. After lunch, we will head for home and return to Versailles around 4:00 p.m. Flyers and forms are available at the main church entrance and the youth ministry office in the church basement St. Walbert Room. I need a chaperone; if anyone is interested, call Mike at 937-638-0969. You will need to be VIRTUS trained and approved.
Summer Youth Ministry: We will be having Summer Youth Ministry sessions this year on Wednesday nights. The schedule is going to be erratic because of summer conflicts and summer youth ministry events. The next Summer Youth Ministry Session will be this Wednesday, July 14, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the St. Denis Church basement. All Junior High and High School youth are welcome.
