EASTER DUTIES 2020

As it is not possible for the faithful to receive Holy Communion at this time, and into the future, the Bishops of England and Wales have dispensed the Easter Duties for the year 2020. The obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days is removed during these emergency circumstances of the lockdown, and for as long as they last. This pandemic is the serious reason why this obligation does not apply at this time.

We are encouraged to develop ways in which we can renew and deepen still more our spiritual relationship with God.

The Congregation for Sacred Worship, speaking about the pandemic, reminds the faithful who cannot receive sacramental absolution, that ‘perfect contrition, rooted in love of God who is to be loved above all things, expressed in a sincere request for forgiveness, insofar as the penitent is able to make it at that moment, and accompanied by the firm intention to go to confession as soon as is possible, obtains forgiveness of all sins, including grave sin (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1452).

Confessions cannot be heard over the telephone. Services of General Absolution cannot be held as this involves travel and the gathering of people.

Please do not attempt to attend Church for any reason. All liturgies, parish activities and meetings are postponed until further notice

and our Churches remain locked during the current pandemic

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Entrance Antiphon Cf. Is 48: 20 Proclaim a joyful sound and let it be heard; proclaim to the ends of the earth: The Lord has freed his people, alleluia.

The Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Collect Grant, almighty God, that we may celebrate with heartfelt devotion these days of joy, which we keep in honour of the risen Lord, and that what we relive in remembrance we may always hold to in what we do. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading Acts 8:5-8,14-17 Philip went to a Samaritan town and proclaimed the Christ to them. The people

united in welcoming the message Philip preached, either because they had heard of the miracles he worked or because they saw them for themselves. There were, for example, unclean spirits that came shrieking out of many who were possessed, and several paralytics and cripples were cured. As a result there was great rejoicing in that town. When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, and they went down there, and prayed for the Samaritans to receive the Holy Spirit, for as yet he had not come down on any of them: they had only been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 65(66):1-7,16,20

Cry out with joy to God, all the earth.

Cry out with joy to God all the earth, O sing to the glory of his name. O render him glorious praise. Say to God: ‘How tremendous your deeds!

Cry out with joy to God, all the earth.

‘Before you all the earth shall bow; shall sing to you, sing to your name!’ Come and see the works of God, tremendous his deeds among men.

Cry out with joy to God, all the earth.

He turned the sea into dry land, they passed through the river dry-shod. Let our joy then be in him; he rules for ever by his might.

Cry out with joy to God, all the earth.

Come and hear, all who fear God. I will tell what he did for my soul:

Page 3: Welcome to the Catholic parishes of IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ...le2catholicparishes.info/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Newsletter-17t… · Pilmira Garland, Robert Hyams, Tecla Kilby, Josephine

Blessed be God who did not reject my prayer nor withhold his love from me.

Cry out with joy to God, all the earth.

Second reading 1 Peter 3:15-18 Reverence the Lord Christ in your hearts, and always have your answer ready for people who ask you the reason for the hope that you all have. But give it with courtesy and respect and with a clear conscience, so that those who slander you when you are living a good life in Christ may be proved wrong in the accusations that they bring. And if it is the will of God that you should suffer, it is better to suffer for doing right than for doing wrong. Why, Christ himself, innocent though he was, had died once for sins, died for the guilty, to lead us to God. In the body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life.

Gospel Acclamation Jn14:23 Alleluia, alleluia! Jesus said: ‘If anyone loves me he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him.’ Alleluia!

Gospel John 14:15-21 Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If you love me you will keep my commandments. I shall ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you for ever, that Spirit of truth whom the world can never receive since it neither sees nor knows him; but you know him, because he is with you, he is in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come back to you. In a short time the world will no longer see me; but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will understand that I am in my Father and you in me and I in you. Anybody who receives my commandments and keeps them will be one who loves me; and anybody who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I shall love him and show myself to him.’

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, At the words that follow, up to and including ‘and became man’, all bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Words of encouragement from Pope Francis…

Prayer to Mary during Coronavirus Pandemic O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of Your People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

“Tonight before falling asleep think about when we will return to the street. When we hug again, when all the shopping together will seem like a party.

Let's think about when the coffees will return to the bar, the small talk, the photos close to each other. We think about when it will be all a memory

but normality will seem an unexpected and beautiful gift. We will love everything that has so far seemed futile to us.

Every second will be precious. Swims at the sea, the sun until late, sunsets, toasts, laughter.

We will go back to laughing together. Strength and courage"

Words of encouragement from Fr Michael…

It is wonderful to witness and hear about the community spirit that is very evident at this time, with people checking on our elderly parishioners and keeping in touch with one another. We also have a list of volunteers that can help with shopping. Please let me know if you need some help in this regard. Myself, Fr. John and Ministers of Holy Communion are regularly telephoning our housebound parishioners, as are many of our parishioners.

Especially for our First Communion and Confirmation Candidates… We do not know yet when First Communion and Confirmation will take place but that does not prevent each day being an opportunity to deepen our friendship with the Risen Christ and to do what we can to treat each other with kindness.

For our First Communion Candidates, continue with our preparation with the help of your parents. You will by now received an email with some suggestions of how to use your First Communion books. The Rosary will be prayed for you on Tuesday 19th May at 12 noon and we hope you will be able to join with the prayers of our parishioners also especially on that day.

For our Confirmation Candidates, may I suggest that you tune in to NDCYS (Nottingham Diocese Catholic Youth Service) new “You Tube” Channel, NDCYS Live! on Mondays and Fridays. Tom Baptist and the Briars Team are truly inspirational with what they have to offer and will also enjoy it. The Rosary will be prayed for you on Thursday 21st May at 12 noon and we hope you will be able to join with the prayers of our parishioners also especially on that day.

May the Risen Lord continue to bless you and all that are dear to you. May He grant us peace in mind and hearts and as these restrictions continue may He give us above all patience.

Fr Michael

Mass Intentions…

If you would like a Mass celebrated for a particular intention, please let me know of the intention by post or email. If you require a Mass Card signing please indicate this on your request and I will organise collection by prior arrangement or post the card to you, which ever is convenient.

Parish Finances…

Thank you to those who have been in touch regarding Parish Finances during this time regarding their weekly contributions. Your concern and generosity are very much appreciated. We also realise that the current emergency is affecting many people’s income and they may not be able to continue their level of offerings. If this is the case, we fully understand.

The Diocese has currently advised that for those who give cash, please continue to put aside and we will gratefully receive them, along with your Easter Offering, when normal Mass celebrations resume. Please do not put envelopes through the Presbytery letterbox as we have no means of banking at this time. This advice is constantly being reviewed and we will update you on any changes as soon as we are aware. If you would like your new supply of envelopes posting to your home address or would like to change to standing order, please contact Fr. Michael by email or telephone and we will arrange this for you.

Blessing for an Easter Meal

Creator God, you give us food from the earth to nourish and sustain us. Redeemer Lord, you give us food for life in Bread and Word. Spirit of Wisdom feed our minds with hope and optimism.

Lord, we thank you for all our food and ask your blessing on this, our Easter meal.

We also ask your blessing on our families and friends unable to gather at this time; for frontline and key workers unable to pause in their mission and relentless tasks;

for our priests, especially Pope Francis, Bishop Patrick, Fr. Michael and Fr John, who continue to break the Bread for us behind closed doors

and we pray for ourselves, “they who stay at home, also serve”.

As we celebrate the joy of Resurrection may the light of the Easter Candle dispel all darkness, fear and anxiety.

(light a candle here if safe to do so) Encourage and inspire us to be confident in love and friendship with you, the Risen Lord, and with one another until we can all

once again gather at the Eucharistic table of the Lord. (Jackie Williams)

Liturgical note: The Easter Season runs for 50 days until Pentecost Sunday (31st May 2020) so this blessing prayer can be used for any/all meals during this time

May…Month of the Holy Rosary

The month of May is a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this 'family' aspect also from a spiritual point of view. For this reason I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. Pope Francis, St John Lateran Bascilica on 25th April 2020

Fr Michael invites you to join with him in reciting the rosary at 12 noon everyday during May. Along with your own intentions, please can we pray for the following intentions –

Sunday 17th May For all parishioners Monday 18th May For the wisdom to treat the earth and all God’s creation with respect Tuesday 19th May For our First Communion Candidates Wednesday 20th May For those suffering from depression and anxiety (May is Mental Health Awareness Month) Thursday 21st May For awareness of our Baptismal Vocation Friday 22nd May For our Confirmation Candidates Saturday 23rd May For the sick and housebound of our communities Sunday 24th May For the right use of communication and media

SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Thursday 21st May is a Holy Day of Obligation. However, as the Obligation is currently suspended due to the Pandemic and our Churches remain closed the Order of Mass and

the Readings of the Day are provided here for your own private devotion or to use if you can join Mass online.

Entrance Antiphon Acts 1: 11 Men of Galilee, why gaze in wonder at the heavens? This Jesus whom you saw ascending into heaven will return as you saw him go, alleluia.

Collect Gladden us with holy joys, almighty God, and make us rejoice with devout thanksgiving, for the Ascension of Christ your Son is our exaltation, and, where the Head has gone before in glory, the Body is called to follow in hope. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading Acts 1:1-11 In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the beginning until the day he gave his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and was taken up to heaven. He had shown himself alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he had continued to appear to them and tell them about the kingdom of God. When he had been at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised. ‘It is’ he had said ‘what you have heard me speak about: John baptised with water but you, not many days from now, will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.’ Now having met together, they asked him, ‘Lord, has the time come? Are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has

decided by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to the ends of the earth.’ As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. They were still staring into the sky when suddenly two men in white were standing near them and they said, ‘Why are you men from Galilee standing here looking into the sky? Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, this same Jesus will come back in the same way as you have seen him go there.’

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 46(47):2-3,6-9 God goes up with shouts of joy; the Lord goes up with trumpet blast.

All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy! For the Lord, the Most High, we must fear, great king over all the earth.

God goes up with shouts of joy; the Lord goes up with trumpet blast.

God goes up with shouts of joy; the Lord goes up with trumpet blast. Sing praise for God, sing praise, sing praise to our king, sing praise.

God goes up with shouts of joy; the Lord goes up with trumpet blast.

God is king of all the earth, sing praise with all your skill. God is king over the nations; God reigns on his holy throne.

Page 9: Welcome to the Catholic parishes of IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ...le2catholicparishes.info/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Newsletter-17t… · Pilmira Garland, Robert Hyams, Tecla Kilby, Josephine

God goes up with shouts of joy; the Lord goes up with trumpet blast.

Second reading Ephesians 1:17-23 May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a spirit of wisdom and perception of what is revealed, to bring you to full knowledge of him. May he enlighten the eyes of your mind so that you can see what hope his call holds for you, what rich glories he has promised the saints will inherit and how infinitely great is the power that he has exercised for us believers. This you can tell from the strength of his power at work in Christ, when he used it to raise him from the dead and to make him sit at his right hand, in heaven, far above every Sovereignty, Authority, Power, or Domination, or any other name that can be named not only in this age but also in the age to come. He has put all things under his feet and made him, as the ruler of everything, the head of the Church; which is his body, the fullness of him who fills the whole creation.

Gospel Acclamation Mt28:19,20 Alleluia, alleluia! Go, make disciples of all the nations. I am with you always; yes, to the end of time. Alleluia!

Gospel Matthew 28:16-20 The eleven disciples set out for Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meet them. When they saw him they fell down before him, though some hesitated. Jesus came up and spoke to them. He said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you. And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.’

Prayer over the Offerings We offer sacrifice now in supplication, O Lord, to honour the wondrous Ascension of your Son: grant, we pray, that through this most holy exchange we, too, may rise up to the heavenly realms. Through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon Mt 28: 20 Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age, alleluia. Prayer after Communion Almighty ever-living God, who allow those on earth to celebrate divine mysteries, grant, we pray, that Christian hope may draw us onward to where our nature is united with you. Through Christ our Lord.

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

Each of us has a geneology, a family tree. In my own family tree there are famous and infamous characters, ordinary people and extraordinary people. They each have had an influence on me and who I am today, either consciously or intuitively. The Gospel of Matthew begins with the geneology of Jesus in much the same way bringing into his family tree many of the Old Testament individuals and their stories such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David and Solomon, and finishes with Joseph of the Gospels, “husband of Mary”. Our ancestors and their stories to a certain extent explain who we are today and where we belong in the world. Over the Easter season the Gospels give us a deeper insight as to who Jesus is and where he came from, not in the genealogical or geographical sense that was proclaimed to us at Christmas but from individuals such as Thomas proclaiming “My Lord and My God” and from Jesus himself letting his disciples recognise him in the Scripture stories and the breaking of bread at Emmaus. Jesus is also very specific in describing himself: “I am the gate of the sheepfold” and “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”. When God revealed himself to Moses in the Old Testament he said “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14) so when the Jewish people around Jesus heard him making “I AM” statements they would have known instantly that he was relating himself to God.

This week we mark the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord into heaven. The day also marks 40 days since we began to celebrate the Resurrection and we have 10 days left before the Easter Season comes to a close on the Solemnity of Pentecost. At the Ascension Jesus gives a clear commandment to his disciples to baptise “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. We hear in the Gospel today the same baptismal formula that brought each of us into a unique and special relationship with the Risen Lord. By Baptism we are embedded ever more deeply into the family of God. By Baptism we are called into a relationship of trust and love that exists between God and each of his children (Romans 8:15 and Gal 4:6) By Baptism we are plunged into the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus, what we now call the Paschal Mystery. Baptism gives a new and everlasting geneology as a member of God’s family, the ties of which cannot be broken or reversed, such is the unconditional and steadfast love the Risen Lord has for each of us! (Jackie Williams)

CATHOLIC BISHOPS’ CONFERENCE UPDATE AND

RESPONSE TO GOVERNMENT DOCUMENT

“OUR PLAN TO REBUILD: THE UK GOVERNMENT’S COVID-19 RECOVERY STRATEGY

The Government document states that the re-opening of public spaces including “public places of worship” will not take place until at least 4th July 2020. The full report and plan can be downloaded at gov.uk website

Statement from the Catholic Bishops The timing and the manner of the opening of churches touches profound sensitivities and spiritual needs. The Government’s document and statements fail to recognise this.

The Government’s position, established today, includes these steps aimed at opening churches as soon as possible: the establishment of a task force for places of worship, to work closely with ‘stakeholders’ in ensuring that premises are COVID-19 secure; and heeding the experience of other countries in which churches are already open for worship.

In dialogue with the Government, the Catholic Church will continue its engagement in this process and has already submitted a detailed plan, in full accordance with public health guidelines, for churches to be opened for private prayer.

The Church is ready to play its full part in the task force, understanding that this includes the possible earlier use of churches for private prayer, as a first safe step towards their use for public worship.

During the daily Government briefing on Wednesday 13th May the government confirmed that they will begin consultation and discussions with all faith leaders next week re the opening of places of worship prior to 4th July for private prayer only

Live Streamed Masses are being offered for the Sick, their families, NHS staff and those working in social care. Cardinal Vincent Nichols has expressed his “deep appreciation” for all those caring for others during the coronavirus pandemic. Acknowledging the community solidarity behind the “Clap for our Carers” initiative Cardinal Nichols has said that “on Thursday evenings at 7.00pm, a Bishop will celebrate Mass in one of the cathedrals for the care workers.” These have already taken place at Westminster Cathedral, Arundel Cathedral, Leeds Cathedral and this last Thursday at Newcastle Cathedral The next two Thursdays they will be live streamed from:

Thursday 21st May Shrewsbury Cathedral https://www.shrewsburycathedral.org Thursday 28th May Middlesbrough Cathedral middlesbroughrccathedral.org

Cardinal Nichols goes on to say “Use that time before 8.00pm on a Thursday to offer your prayers of thanksgiving for these generous, courageous people. We applaud, but we pray and we pray fervently for them. May God bless them all”

Prayer for the Year of the Word…

Living God, you walk alongside us and speak to us throughout the Scriptures.

Your Son, Jesus Christ, listens to our hopes and fears and shows us how to live for one another.

Send us the Holy Spirit to open our hearts and minds so that we may be your witnesses throughout the world. Amen.
