A Message from Fr. Jake… This last weekend we celebrated a special Mass where four people were baptized and were fully initiated in the Catholic Church. We also had another six people made a profession of faith and were also fully initiated into the Catholic Church. Therefore, I want to congratulate Andres, Ava, Haylee, Aiden, JP, Justin, Ballie, Terry, Christopher, and Catherine on joining our parish community. Please continue to hold these individuals in your prayers. I know that many of us will not be able to welcome them personally anytime soon, but your prayers of support will definitely help them during these initial days of their life as Catholics. I know that it hard to believe, but the first day of school is less than one month away. We are hoping to welcome kids back to school on Monday, August 24th. This weekend JFK will be holding back-to-school registration as we prepare for the start of the school year. Registration will be held on Sunday, August 2nd, Monday, August 3rd, and Tuesday, August 4th this year. Families are asked to sign-up for a time slot through an on-line service to come in and register your children for school. Please see the parish website, www.olvjfk.com, for more details about registration and selecting a time for you to register your kids for school. This is also the last weekend that Cameron and Ben will be with us in the parish. Cameron will be returning to Mundelein Seminary in two weeks, and Ben will be returning to St. Paul Seminary in four weeks. It was a blessing to have them here for the summer, especially as we tackled some projects around the parish campus. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Like any other student, they are facing a lot of uncertainty as they return to school, so your prayers will be much appreciated in the coming days and weeks ahead. God-willing, Ben will be ordained a transitional deacon in about ten months, and I am hoping that this will be celebration that many of us here in the parish can attend at Sacred Heart Cathedral early next June. This coming week I will be in and out of the office because of my new responsibilities as Director of Seminarians for the Diocese. The latter will happen one or twice a month as I attend meetings and make visits. Fr. Scott will be around to help and assist if any needs arise. One of us will always try to be available, so thank you in advance for being flexibile with whatever priest is available at the time of your need. I know that many of you have not been able to talk with Fr. Scott as of yet, but I feel very blessed to have this co-worker in the vineyard assisting with the pastoral work here at the parish. As we move into the future, I pray that more of you are able to get to know this faith-filled priest. As a reminder, the parish office has returned to its regular office hours that existed prior to the shutdown for COVID-19 on March 17th. The parish office is open on Monday through Friday from 7:30AM until 4:00PM. There will no longer be special weekend office hours. If you need assistance after office hours, please call the parish office to make an after-hours appointment with a staff member or you can use the emergency number (563-293-1177) if immediate assistance is needed. Please know that parishioners are still available to help fellow parishioners who are in need of assistance because of COVID-19 restrictions. We will also continue to call on parishioners, but they will be less frequent. Our Lady of Victory, pray for us!

This year, our kindergarten families are invited to participate in a Family Faith Formation on Wednesdays when classes are held instead of class with a teacher. This will be set up in the cafeteria, allowing for social distancing between families. There is a place on the registration form to indicate your interest in participating. Information about on-line registration has been emailed to families who had students registered in K-7 last year. A link to the on-line registration can also be found under the Policies/Forms tab on the parish website. Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Stewardship Moment How often do we really place our trust in Jesus when the situation looks grim? The Gospel account of Jesus feeding over 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish tells us that no gift is too small or insignificant when offered with love. But we have to do our part. Good stewards know that this involves trust and the belief that Jesus has a plan.

Social Action/Christian Service What does pro-life mean to you? Does it mean ending abortion laws? What else is considered pro-life in the Catholic Church? Does it mean to care for the elderly person, the homeless, refugees and immigrants, does it mean to prevent the death penalty? It also means keeping the person in line with you at the grocery store safe, or the person by you at Mass, by wearing a mask. Pro-life is wearing a mask because you are concerned about the health and welfare of those around you, including strangers. The CDC has stated that if everyone wears a mask for four to six weeks the virus will decrease significantly. Every life is worth protecting and that is what pro-life means.

Mission Appeal 2020 Please help us support the mission appeal effort on behalf of Father Mansuetus from the Diocese of Same which is situated in Kilimanjaro Region, in the northern part of Tanzania, Africa. The purpose of this years appeal is for well drilling funds in the village of Mwembe in the Diocese of Same. 62% of the population has no access to clean water. Women and children walk an average of 4 hours a day to water ponds which hold rainstorm water during the rainy season. This water is dirty because it is used by people and animals. People use this water for drinking, cooking, and washing. As a result, many people suffer from diarrhea and typhoid. A new well for the village will provide:

Clean and safe water

Cholera, typhoid and diarrhea will be reduced or even eradicated

Women will have ample time for economic activities and children will spend more time in schools.

Death rate will be reduced by 60% Due to COVID-19, Father Mansuetus will not be able to come in person to speak to us about his village and the missionary appeal. Donations can be dropped off in the collection box in the back of church or the parish office.
