In a piece of music, every note counts - working together with others in 4- H helps us see that every person’s contribution is important and necessary for success. It takes a combination of different notes to make beautiful music. Sharing your fun 4-H experiences with others is sometime all it takes for someone to join. Let’s all keep the same beat and support one another. As we acquire new, valuable life skills through 4-H, let’s encourage others to take advantage of the opportunity to be a part of 4-H, also. Just as country, rock, classical and jazz are only a few of the many types of music, 4-H offers a wide variety of projects, ranging from consumer decision making to wildlife. I urge you to choose to play a new style or piece of music – in other words, try a new 4-H project. What better time than now? It’s like sight-reading music – playing something you’ve never rehearsed. Someone once said, “To get what you've never had, you must do what you've never done.” You might surprise yourself and find out that the new 4-H project you try is suited perfectly for you! You will never know until you try! Remember that you possess unlimited potential. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters com- pared to what lies within us.” Time flies - please don’t put off any longer doing or being a part of something new. We need your help to make the music of 4-H the best that it can be! The future is here. The future is now. Welcome to the Future! God Bless! Kelley Ullrich

Report from Texas 4-H Council By Hannah Speed,

District 11 1st Vice Chairman &

Texas 4-H 1st Vice President

(Goliad County )

2010-2011 Texas 4H Council Officers

President Preston Sturdivant District 9 1st Vice President Hannah Speed District 11 2nd Vice President Alison Lochte District 10 Secretary Ellis Meyer District 12 Public Relations Officer Jacy Bradford District 1 Health and Safety Officer Lana Franceschini District 10 Historian Laurel Cantu District 12

On Tuesday, July 20th Kelley Ullrich, Ariana Barajas and myself traveled to Lubbock, Texas, to partici-pate in the 2010-2011 Texas 4-H Council Workshop. We had an amazing time and were proud to be representing Dis-trict 11 as the Chairman, 1st Vice Chair, and 2nd vice chair. Soon after arriving, we lis-tened to some words of inspi-ration from Dr. Chris Bole-man, the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program Director. Wednesday began with an early morning Leadership and Team Building session held by Dr. Boleman. His presentation included an in depth slideshow about the fundamentals of leaders, as well as some entertaining activities. Following Dr. Bole-man, Mr. Kyle Merten, Exten-sion Associate – 4-H, chal-lenged State Council mem-bers to step up at State 4-H Roundup. To finish the busy morning, the Council set off on a scavenger hunt across the Texas Tech University campus, searching for any-thing from buildings and stat-ues, to pools and even a fa-mous horse!

After lunch we set-tled down to listen to the Di-

rector of Breed Love Foods, a Non-profit organization cre-ated to battle world hunger, and the Ronald McDonald House Volunteer Director. Then, we traveled to the Ronald McDonald House in Lubbock to help serve meals, tidy up rooms, and clean the children’s playground. It was a busy but rewarding day for all of us! We topped off the night with some fun, council led activities. Thursday morning ar-rived quickly with a presenta-tion about Media Communi-cations from Doctors Erica Irlbeck and Courtney Meyers, Assistant Professors in the De-partment of Agricultural Edu-cation and Communications and TTU. Then, Mrs. Stepha-nie West, the Associate Direc-tor of the University Career Services at TTU, gave an out-standing workshop on “Etiquette and Dress for Suc-cess.” Soon after lunch was served, Ag Ambassadors and TTU Staff came to judge each Council member’s public speaking skills. Directly fol-lowing the critiques, the coun-cil elected the 2010-2011 Texas 4-H Council Officers. After elections, we were able to get dressed up for photos and the formal closing banquet. Once

the banquet was over it was time for some serious fun! We traveled all the way across Lubbock to “Main Event” where we bowled and played some intense laser tag! Friday morning, Dr. Rudy Ritz, an Assistant Pro-fessor in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications at TTU and former Council 1st Vice Presi-dent, gave a concluding speech about being role mod-els. Then, the newly elected President, Preston Sturdivant, lead the first 2010-2011 Texas 4-H Council Meeting of the year. The council set future goals, assigned committees, and designated an official dress. That evening, Kelley, Ariana and I flew back home with a whole new grasp on the meaning of leadership. We cannot wait to share eve-rything we learned with the rest of District 11. With such an outstanding Texas 4-H Coun-cil, this upcoming year should be more fun, entertaining, and different than ever be-fore!!

Look, its District 11’s very

own Hannah Speed!

Congratulations Hannah,

Texas 4-H Council 1st Vice

President!!
