Azeez, Sarafadeen Tunde (DPhil) Mechanical Engineering Mr Sarafadeen Azeez received a BSc Honours and an MSc in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the University of Lagos, Nigeria, in 2009 and 2012, respectively. He gained admission to the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2015 for his doctorate degree. His doctorate research was on weld reliability characterisation of dissimilar friction stir welds of aluminium alloys. Mr Azeez is a registered member of the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineering (SAIMechE) and the Southern African Institute of Welding (SAIW). The joining of dissimilar alloys is very attractive in structural engineering, as it harnesses the optimal benefits of both materials joined with diverse properties for technical purposes. Mr Azeez successfully employed the friction stir welding technique to join up to 10 mm thick plates of AA6082-T6 and AA7075-T651 dissimilar aluminium alloy, both in single and double-sided configurations. The reliability of the welds was characterised and ascertained through non-destructive testing (NDT), micro hardness profiling, tensile testing, X-Ray Diffractometry (XRD), residual stresses, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Weibull 2-parameters approximation and Finite Element Modelling. The adoption of the reliability concept to FS welds is novel and unique, as its implementation, going forward, will enhance the performance assessment of welds for typical aerospace and automotive applications. From the research, Mr Azeez has produced four ISI-listed journals articles, which are under review; six peer-reviewed conference papers, one book chapter and one book manuscript, which is in progress. Supervisor: Prof ET Akinlabi Co-Supervisor: Prof SD Brandi

16

Eke, Chikezie Chinemerem (DPhil) Engineering Management Chikezie Chinemerem Eke obtained his Honours from the Department of Civil

Engineering, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria, in 2008, and his

Master’s in Construction Management from the Department of Construction

Management and Quantity Surveying, University of Johannesburg, in 2014. He

enrolled for his doctoral studies with the University of Johannesburg in 2014, where

he has been awarded the Global Excellence Scholarship until 2017. He is a

member of the South African Institute of Civil Engineering (SAICE).

The candidate’s research study focused on a housing construction quality model for

low-income housing in South Africa. The model was developed, based on existing

theoretical studies, the Delphi study findings, and a questionnaire survey, which

were validated through a conceptual model developed for the study. The significant

contribution of the study is the development of a new, holistically integrated housing

construction quality model for the prediction of housing construction quality in low-

income housing in South Africa. However, the current integrated model advances

that housing construction quality in a seven-factor construct. The candidate has

published a book chapter and more than fifteen peer-reviewed conference articles

during his doctoral studies.

Supervisor: Prof WD Thwala Co-supervisor: Prof CO Aigbavboa

17

Munyai, Thomas Thinandavha (DPhil) Engineering Management Mr Munyai is a lecturer and acting Head of Department of Operations Management at Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria, South Africa. He holds an MBA from the University of South Africa (Unisa), a BSc Honours in Mathematical Statistics (Wits), and a BSc, cum laude, in Mathematics and Statistics (University of Limpopo). He has 20 years’ experience in the explosives, cable manufacturing and food processing industry, and as a factory, operations, product and sales, and procurement manager. His professional memberships include the South African Production and Inventory Control Society (SAPICS) and the Operations Research Society of South Africa (ORRSA). His fields of interest are optimisation through Lean Six Sigma, productivity, linear and non-linear modelling, work study, statistics, mathematics, simulation, process mapping modelling and manufacturing technology. This thesis contributes to knowledge on the application of Lean Six Sigma to productivity improvement in small- and medium-sized steel manufacturing enterprises. A mathematical model to improve productivity in this sector was developed. This model used exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression modelling approaches for the development and validation of the Lean Six Sigma framework and was validated using four case studies. Supervisor: Prof C Mbohwa

18

Muteba, Mbika (DPhil) Electrical and Electronic Engineering Mbika Muteba received an Associate Degree of Applied Science and Technology in Electrical Engineering from the Higher Institute of Technology, Katanga, DRC, in 1996. After ten years of industrial experience in electrical machines, machine drives, and primary and secondary power distribution networks, in both DRC and South Africa, he joined the Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa, in 2006. He received the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees (cum laude) in Technology in Electrical Engineering in 2008 and 2013, respectively. He registered for the DPhil programme in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in March 2015. He is a registered professional engineering technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and he is also a full member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He is a lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology at the University of Johannesburg. His research interests are design and control of electrical machines for electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles and renewable energy applications. Mr Mbika Muteba’s research focused on the development of a novel transverse-laminated synchronous reluctance motor that produces torque with less ripple content. The work has presented the key aspects of design, analytical considerations and modelling of a novel motor. The different findings of theoretical analysis and simulation results were validated through practical measurements. A statistical approach was used to evaluate the effects of specific design parameters on the performance of the novel motor, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The novel motor was modelled, using the 3D Finite Element Method (FEM). The equations that govern the numerical computation of electromagnetic parameters were derived, presented and validated through Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Supervisor: Prof B Twala Co-Supervisor: Prof DV Nicolae

19

Ndou, Ndivhuwo (DPhil) Mechanical Engineering Mr Ndivhuwo Ndou is a lecturer in Industrial Engineering in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, College of Science, Engineering and Technology at the University of South Africa (Unisa). He matriculated from Gwamasenga School, Tsianda, Vhembe, in 1995. He received a BSc Honours in Industrial Engineering from the University of Pretoria. He completed his Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Johannesburg and proceeded on to a doctorate degree. Ndivhuwo is a registered engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa and has held various positions in the manufacturing and financial sector in South Africa. Titanium alloy Grade 5 (Ti6Al4V) has attracted the interest of the engineering community, because of its excellent physical and mechanical properties. Mr Ndou successfully used the Laser Material Deposition technology to produce a composite of Titanium alloy Grade 5 and tungsten. The composites were characterised through micro hardness profiling, dry sliding wear analysis, corrosion test, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy combined with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). Excellent coatings with good bonding between the interfaces of the deposits and the substrates were obtained. It was observed that the microhardness profiles and the wear properties of the primary alloy were greatly improved with the inclusion of the tungsten powder when compared to the uncoated Ti6Al4V alloy. His research work is significant and has potential industrial application, such as in the repairs of expensive damaged turbine blades. Some of his research findings have been published in a book chapter, one ISI-listed journal article and two peer-reviewed conference papers. Supervisor: Prof ET Akinlabi Co-Supervisor: Prof S Pityana
