W.C. HandyHandy was born in 1873 and wrote "Memphis Blues" in 1912. Some of his other notable compositions were "St. Louis Blues", "BealeSt. Blues" and "Yellow Dog Blues". He was noted more as a composer rather than as a performer but eye problems more or less forced his retirement in both areas in the late 1930's. He died in 1958. Joplin, of course, was known for his "ragtime" music.

Elmore JamesThe version ZZ Top recorded was based on Elmore James' 1951 version for Trumpet Records. The song has an earlier history, having been recorded by Robert Johnson in 1936 as "(I Believe I'll) Dust My Broom". Even though there are scores of versions out there by various blues artists, it is clearly apparent that guitarist Billy Gibbons was paying homage to James, who was one of his slide guitar heroes. He was also known to "jam" with Hopkins in Houston in the 60's.

Denny Freeman Denny Freeman was a band mate of Paul Ray And The Cobras with Stevie Ray back in the 1970's. One of his critically acclaimed yet "little-heard" releases is "A Tone For My Sins". Worth checking out. Eric Johnson is a great Texas guitar player but is more known for jazz/rock fusion. Boyack is a blues guitarist that was once signed to the Bullseye Blues label. He was ousted from the label after being discovered that he was "moonlighting" as a bank teller. A guy gets hungry doesn't he? We're talking about the blues here! Ealey is a musician that plays in a traditional blues style on the Dallas scene.

Probably an old African-American community there's nothing there to see now but trees, creeks, pastureland, and cows. There has been an annual blues festival held in his honor in Wortham since 1997. That same year he had a new headstone placed at his gravesite. The inscription reads "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean".

It is reported that Tucker was originally slated to record the song, was unable to make the session and Smith filled in, a fortuitous circumstance that made her a wealthy woman. Six-String BanjoPapa Charlie was another Paramount Records artist, who released many recordings. Some of his last sides appeared on Vocalion. His recording career began in 1924. Some critics regard him to be the first "country blues" act, but his style actually is more appropriate from a "vaudeville" sense. On most of his records, you will find him singing and playing a six-string banjo. Kind of archaic, with the banjo as an instrument being used in medicine show acts. It didn't hamper him from selling records. After his career was over, no one knows what became of him. He is believed to have died circa 1938.
