“Go out there and play Navy Hockey!”

That is a frequent exhortation made by head coach Mike

Fox in the locker room to his players before the Midshipmen

take the ice. For every player on the team, those seven simple

words mean it’s time for 60 minutes of an aggressive, disci-

plined and unrelenting system of offense, defense, and neutral

zone play that wears opponents down and enables Navy to be

competitive until the final buzzer sounds.

That intense, hard-hitting, and fast-paced brand of hockey

the Mids are known for year after year defines the term “Navy

Hockey.” But who comprises Navy Hockey? The answer to that

question can change as the personality of the team differs from

year-to-year.

This year’s squad is comprised of an especially selfless

group of leaders who have an impressive reputation of excel-

ling both on and off the ice. They entered the season with a

combined cumulative grade point average of 3.233, which is

among the top three intercollegiate sports at the Naval Acad-

emy behind only golf and women’s tennis. The hockey team is

comprised of several players who currently hold, or will hold,

Company Commander and other high-ranking Brigade leader-

ship positions. The roster includes one accomplished musician

and one Class President.

The 2009-2010 squad will be a young team but will also

have some talented returnees who impressed coaches and fans

alike last year as plebes with their speed, intensity, and ability to

put the puck in the net. Several others who began last season

on the taxi squad earned permanent spots on the roster by the

end of the year.

Last season, Navy chose to test its place nationally by play-

ing not only the toughest schedule the Midshipmen have ever

played, but arguably the toughest 42-game schedule among all

American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) teams. Navy

ended the season with 15 wins; another four games were tied

at the end of regulation. Without a doubt, the Mids definitely

made a strong statement that they were a highly competitive

team on the national stage.

Four of the top five goal scorers from that 2008-2009

team graduated last May, taking a combined total of 67 goals

with them. Whether this year’s returning upper classmen and

newcomers can make up for those lost tallies will go a long way

in determining whether the Mids can surpass last season’s 15

wins or the previous year’s 20-win mark.

Keeping the puck out of Navy’s net is not expected to be a

major question mark for the 2009-2010 season. The Mids re-

turn three seasoned goaltenders, led by seniors Eric Anderson

and Jeremey Estevez, who have played in a combined total

of 99 games in their Naval Academy careers. They are joined

by sophomore Jameson Marshall, who compiled an impres-

sive 3.78 goals against average and .872 save percentage in

22 games as a freshman.

Waiting in the wings for a chance to see some action be-

tween the pipes is a trio of talented plebe netminders: Christian

Sandroni (from Granger, Indiana and the younger brother of

Alex, class of 2007), Ryan Dendler (an Illinois native who

attended Brother Rice High School), and Michael Thorsen

(who was a goaltender with the AAA Florida Everblades near his

Naples, Florida home).

Navy returns a solid corps of rugged defensemen who

should help goalies keep pucks out of the net and opponents

out of the crease. Leading this year’s backliners are senior team

captains Chandler Brewer and Patrick Heitman, plus

“THE MIDSHIPMEN WILL HAVE TO FIND WAYSTO SCORE EARLY AND SCORE OFTEN.”

Page 7: Welcome to the McMullen Hockey Arena within the Thornton D ... · Welcome to the McMullen Hockey Arena within the Thornton D. and Elizabeth S. Hooper Brigade Sports Complex. We are

assistant captain Andrew Ochalek. Connecticut native Brew-

er scored a pair of goals last season, and the 6’0”, 210-pound

Heitman is the team’s leading scorer among returnees after a

12-goal, 21-assist season last year. The 6’2”, 210-pound Och-

alek gives the Mids quiet leadership and a strong physical pres-

ence whenever he steps onto the ice.

Besides the three seniors, Navy has four other returning

defensemen, including juniors Matt Roberts and Jonathan

Wheeler, along with sophomores Gary Beier and Pat

McAleer. Wheeler has played in 50 games during his first

two seasons with the Mids, while both Beier and McAleer made

impressive debuts as freshmen last season.

A pair of incoming plebe defensemen – Patrick Maguire

and Chris Stevens – are also hoping to see some ice time

during the current campaign.

The Midshipmen are also blessed with two outstanding de-

fensive forwards: senior assistant captain Keegan Kinkade

and classmate Calen Mims. Kinkade is a relentless penalty

killer who is consistently matched up against the opposition’s

top scorer, while Mims is looking to bounce back from an injury-

plagued junior year. Mims is also a talented singer-musician

who has recorded several songs in his “off time.”

For Navy to be competitive and successful in the Eastern

States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL) -- facing such pow-

erhouse programs as Penn State, URI, West Chester, and Dela-

ware -- it will have to find ways to score early and score often.

Among those expected to contribute offensive punch are junior

forwards Sam Carlson, Steve Csutoros, Michael Orzetti,

and Jake Stevens-Haas, plus sophomores Tom Fick, Kev-

in Frederick, Shane Moran, Mitch Pulver, Jim Tumolo,

and Phil Castiel.

From that group of 10 wingers and centers, Pulver showed

great promise as a plebe a year ago, contributing 15 goals and

15 assists to finish as the team’s fifth leading scorer. Fick was

right behind his classmate Pulver in the point department, accu-

mulating 7 goals and 18 assists in his rookie campaign. Carl-

son (8 goals), Frederick (5), Orzetti (3), and Tumolo (2) also

displayed an ability to light the lamp on the offensive side of the

ice. Youngster Moran is making his debut with the hockey team

after being a member of the Navy crew team as a plebe.

Besides being a talented hockey player, Orzetti is President

of the Class of 2011.

The returning forwards will have some stiff competition for

spots on the team, thanks to a good group of incoming fresh-

men, many of whom played for highly regarded high school,

prep school, and junior hockey programs around the country

last year. The promising plebes include Rob Van Winter from

Cumberland, RI, a product of Vermont Academy and Mount

Saint Charles Academy; Curtis Bolinger, a hard-nosed skater

from Lancaster, PA; Liam Kearney, a shifty skater from Wil-

braham, MA; as well as several free-wheeling forwards in Matt

Lutch (Milton, MA), Alan Hansen (Orlando, FL), Sean

Parmigiane (Medway, MA), and Scott Wood (Okinawa,

Japan).

Senior Alex Tidei, the likeable Illinois native who has re-

corded a 2.51 goals against average and an .890 save percent-

age in 215 minutes in goal during his USNA career, is serving as

Team President this season.

“We have a great group of guys and outstanding senior

leadership,” observed third year head coach Mike Fox (35-41-5).

“We are this close to being able to compete night in and night

out with the top teams in our league and in the ACHA. There’s

no doubt in my mind that this team has the potential, the ability,

the character, and the heart to take us up to that next level.”

Coach Fox will be assisted behind the bench this year by

Jon Mahaffee, Brendan Curley, Scott Steele and Lt.

Matty Thomas. Mahaffee joins the Navy coaching staff fol-

lowing an impressive two-year stint as head coach at his alma

mater, Towson University. Compiling a 31-27-3 record, the An-

napolis native was named Eastern Collegiate Hockey Associa-

tion (ECHA) ‘Coach of the Year’ last season. Curley, back for

his eighth year with the Midshipmen, played hockey at Miami of

Ohio and with the Hampton Roads Admirals in the ECHL. Steele,

returning for his third season as an assistant coach, played for

several seasons in the Central Hockey League with the Sioux City

Musketeers, St. Paul Saints, and Mohawk Valley Stars. Thomas,

in his first year as an assistant, played for four years on the Navy

Hockey team before graduating in 2005

Navy will play 23 home games, including the 33rd annual

Crabpot Tournament on the second weekend in February. This

year’s tournament will feature Towson University, the University

of Maryland, and first-timer Salisbury University in addition to

the Mids.

As a special highlight this season, the Mids will face Temple

University at the Flyers Skate Zone rink in Philadelphia on Friday

night, December 11 – the night before the Army-Navy football

game being played on Saturday, December 12 at Lincoln Finan-

cial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mike Fox, Head CoachCoach Fox enters his third year at the helm of the United States Naval Academy Men’s

Hockey Team. In his rookie year, he led a team of returning but inexperienced Navy Hockey play-

ers to consecutive 20-game wins for the first time ever. Coach Fox’s “TEAM” approach and lack

of fear for taking on top ranked teams has enabled Navy Hockey to contend at a national level.

In his rookie year, he led a team of returning but inexperienced players to 20 wins, marking the first consecutive 20-win

seasons in Navy Hockey history. Coach Fox was selected as one of eight coaches from across the country to coach at the World

University Games tryout camp and assist in the selection of Team USA for the February 2009 games. He attributes his selection to

his team’s tremendous success but it comes as no surprise to Navy Hockey. The team sees his daily desire to teach his players, his

focus on “team-first”, and his determination to elevate hockey at the United States Naval Academy to the highest collegiate levels

possible, as the reasons for his prestigious selection.

Given his background, it is not surprise that Coach Fox emphasizes the development of skills for team success. Coach Fox

began skating on the frozen ponds of Minnesota at age three and played his first organized hockey in one of the nation’s first and

finest youth hockey programs, the Edina Hockey Association. Not long after, he played for Blake School, an institution steeped in

hockey tradition. At Blake, he was a four-year letterman and team captain. Coach Fox often gives credit to Blake School for helping

him to develop his hockey skills and for providing him with a top notch education. Between high school and college, he played for

the Lancer’s Team in the Olympic Development League and went on to become a four-year letterman for the Ohio University Bob-

cats, playing in the NCAA Division 1 CCHA League. Upon graduation, he was invited to the camp of the WHA’s Minnesota Fighting

Saints and played three years for the Saint Cloud Saints before becoming a Pee Wee coach in the Edina Hockey Association.

Coach Fox has a passion for the game that he loves to share. He has coached Squirt and Midget All-Star Select teams in

Chicago, and a junior team in Fort Worth, Texas that was a State Champion and the Southwest Region runner-up. In addition, he

has worked at hockey camps throughout the country with several very highly regarded hockey coaches, including Doug Woog and

Dave Peterson.

When the Fox’s moved to Annapolis, he continued his passion for the game by teaching skating lessons to children and power

skating skills to local young players. With Lisa, his dedicated wife, the Fox’s built the Navy Youth Hockey program into a strong and

growing organization. Initially starting with about 30 players, they grew the program to over 180 before handing over the reigns.

Today, Navy Youth Hockey has over 250 players and the program continues his philosophy of emphasizing skills and developing

LT Matty Thomas, Assistant Coach

Jon Mahaffee was born in Annapolis, Maryland and played high school hockey for Arch-

bishop Spalding where he helped lead the team to their first ever state championship. During his

freshman year of college, he played at ACHA Division 1 Duquesne University before transferring

to Towson University where he played three seasons as a standout, physical, and tough stay-at-

home defenseman. While at Towson, he played in two conference championship games and two

national tournaments.

LT Matty Thomas enters his first year on the Navy Hockey staff. A native of Bow, New

Hampshire, he was co-captain of the Navy Hockey team, All-League selection, and 4-year letter

winner.

Upon graduation in 2005, he reported to USS MONTEREY (CG 61) where he served as

Strike Officer and Main Propulsion Division Officer. His next tour was onboard the USS ELROD

(FFG 55) where he served as Damage Control Assistant. Currently, he is stationed in Washington

In his first year with the club, Coach Mahaffee brings an impressive resume and record of success to the Navy Hockey program.

After his January 2005 graduation from Towson, he began his coaching career as an assistant coach during the 2006-2007 season

at Walter Johnson High School in Montgomery County, Maryland. That season, Walter Johnson had an undefeated regular season

and went on to become the Montgomery County Public High School League Champions. At the start of the 2007-2008 season, he

was hired as the head coach for his alma mater, Towson University, inheriting a program that was 3-25-1 during the previous season.

During the first season under his leadership, Towson recorded a record of 12-14-1 and won the 2008 Navy Crab Pot Tournament

over host Navy by a score of 4 to 1. For his efforts, he was named the runner up for 2007-2008 ECHA Coach of the Year and was

nominated for ACHA Division 1 Coach of the Year. Last year, during his second year at Towson, the team improved to 19-13-2,

notching key wins over #8 Kent State and a three game sweep of #20 West Virginia. He was named as the 2008-2009 ECHA

Coach of the Year and was again nominated for ACHA Division 1 Coach of the Year. In addition, he was selected as an assistant

coach for the 2009 ACHA Division 1 All Star Game in Wooster, Ohio. During his two years at the helm at Towson, the team recorded

an overall record of 31-27-3.

Coach Mahaffee has a reputation of being a very energetic, intense, and motivating coach who takes a no-nonsense approach

to the game. He expects all of his players to pride themselves in team defense and he constantly preaches team discipline. During

his coaching career, he has had a knack for turning around struggling programs. An Anne Arundel County Police Officer, he resides

in Crofton, Maryland with his fiancée Susan.

DC at Military Sealift Command Headquarters, serving as Battle Watch Captain in the Global Command Information Center.

Prior to entering the Naval Academy, LT Thomas attended St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH, where he was a standout hockey

and lacrosse player. Initially a lacrosse recruit at Navy, he joined the team after Christmas break of his plebe year and quickly became

a key player during his four year career.

His brother Andrew won an NCAA title at Denver University and United States Hockey League title for the Waterloo Blackhawks. A

2004 draft pick of the Washington Capitals, he currently plays professional hockey for the Trenton Devils of the East Coast Hockey League.

As the Navy Hockey team started its play informally on an

Annapolis area pond in the late 1960s, so The Friends of Navy

Hockey (FNH) began in the early 1990s as an informal support

organization of former hockey-playing alumni giving freely of

their time to support the team. That early effort has now evolved

into today’s alumni-led organization which directly supports all

aspects of the team’s operation and development. These con-

tributions range from fundraising, to equipment and uniform

purchases, informal recruiting through a player alumni and

player parent network, annual publication of a media guide and

schedule poster, and other projects as requested by the coaching

staff, officer representative and the team itself. Every year former

player alumni from around the world come to the Academy for

the Alumni Hockey Game Weekend, a tribute to the current team

from the Long Blue Line of hockey graduates. The format has

expanded from a single hockey game to include a golf tourna-

ment and our own seating area for the Navy football game. The

goal of FNH is to help Navy Hockey become the best collegiate

hockey program possible, and to support the development of

the team to whatever competitive level Academy officials and

the Naval Academy Athletic Association determine appropriate.

That hockey is a genuine warrior sport is beyond question. The

sport has been played at West Point and the Air Force Academy

at the NCAA Division I Level for generations. FNH recognizes

that, in continuing to develop the Navy Hockey program, our

organization will in turn allow our alma mater to welcome more

of the talented and brightest as they reach college age and seek

a forum for their hockey talents. Their follow-on careers will ben-

efit from the skills learned on the ice - intense team play, quick

decisions, a total commitment to victory - all directly applicable

to the warfare specialties of today’s naval and Marine officers.

By Ray FeldmannThe U.S. involvement in the Vietnam conflict had not

yet ended. American men and boys were going off to war and -- just as they are doing today in equally dangerous places not far from southeast Asia -- making the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

A gallon of gasoline ran about 40 cents. A postage stamp cost eight cents. A movie ticket was $1.50. “Love Story” and “Summer of ‘42” were box office hits then. Walt Disney World opened in Florida, and Apollo 14 landed on the moon. Watergate was just a hotel on the Washington, D.C. waterfront.

And on the banks of the Severn River, and in a sports arena 29 miles away from Annapolis, a tradition was taking shape. It began inauspiciously, with a meeting of a group of enthusiastic Midshipmen in a small room inside massive Bancroft Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy just before Christ-mas 1970. Soon thereafter, in the winter of 1971, what we know now as “Navy Hockey” was born on a sheet of ice at the old Washington Coliseum in northeast Washington, D.C., not far from Union Station.

Considering that hockey is known by many to be the ultimate warrior sport, it’s no surprise then that Navy’s hockey program was started by a 1971 grad who later be-came a United States Marine.

“I remember we had our first organizational meet-ing in December of 1970, during which we gained ac-ceptance into the Chesapeake Hockey League,” recalled Col. Mel DeMars, USMC (Ret.). “We had our first tryouts and practices in January 1971, cutting down to a 16-man roster. Practice games were played in January, and our first ‘league’ game was in February against the University of Maryland.”

Like it was yesterday, Col. DeMars remembers that Navy’s first goal -- the team was actually called “Annapolis Hockey Club” then because the USNA Administration had

not yet sanctioned the team as an official club sport -- was scored by Ryan Cramer, class of ‘73.

“Ryan scored again a few minutes later to give us a 2-0 lead,” Col. DeMars said. “Maryland went ahead 3-2 in the remaining two periods. With a minute and 40 sec-onds to go in the final period, we took a holding penalty, putting us shorthanded for the remainder of the game.

“With 30 seconds remaining,” he continued, “we sent John Dillingham in for Paul Danks, who had been left on the ice as one of our best shorthanded players. With only 20 seconds to go, Dillingham, Joe Sweeney, and John Lucy took the puck down the ice after defenseman Mike Smiley dug it out of our corner. Sweeney, out of the left corner, sent a beautiful centering pass to Dillingham, who put a backhander past their goaltender with only 10 seconds showing on the clock.”

In their first ever game, the Midshipmen had rallied to tie the Terrapins, 3-3.

“We were pretty ecstatic,” Col. DeMars noted with pride. “Why were we ecstatic with a tie? Because it was a first league game, against an established team who was 20 games into the season, and we had come back in the final minute, despite being a man down.”

As is true with every Navy athletic team today, just as it was then in the winter of ‘71, the Mids never quit. They never surrendered, no matter what the odds. They did whatever it took to get the job done.

A few months later, the Annapolis Hockey Club con-cluded its inaugural season with a 7-1 win over the CHL’s B Division champions, the Baltimore National Brewers, at the old Baltimore Civic Center -- then home to the Ameri-can Hockey League’s Baltimore Clippers. The lopsided Annapolis Hockey Club win was witnessed by the wife of the Naval Academy’s 46th Superintendent, Rear Admiral James F. Calvert.

“A week or so prior to graduation, I was called by our officer representative, Lt. Bill Hogan, over to the Adminis-tration building next to the Chapel,” Col. DeMars recalled. “At that time, Lt. Hogan showed me the artist’s and archi-tectural drawings for the rink to be constructed in Dahlgren Hall. I believe Mrs. Calvert was influential in the process.

“Needless to say, I was pretty thrilled,” he added. “When I graduated in June of 1971, we had an approved club team and a commitment of some funding, a slot in a league, an officer rep, a coach, and a facility in the design stages.”

After two seasons (1970-71 and 1971-72), the An-napolis Hockey Club officially became known as the Navy Hockey Club in 1972-73.

Some 39 seasons have passed since that first team meeting and those initial games at the Washington Coli-seum, Baltimore Civic Center, and other local venues in-cluding the Orchard Ice Rink in Towson and Meadowbrook Ice Rink in Baltimore.

During those ensuing seasons, the Mids practiced and began playing games at Dahlgren Hall. During those years, Dahlgren was packed several rows deep with Mid-shipmen and other local hockey fans. Those spectators were treated to an all-college schedule that featured Penn State, Delaware, Drexel, Pitt, Rutgers, Ramapo, and the

Coast Guard Academy. One year, Navy played arch-rival Army at West Point.

Eventually, hundreds of hockey games were played in historic Dahlgren Hall, located within walking distance of gate #1 on the Naval Academy campus (known as The Yard). Despite its small locker rooms, dim lighting, over-hanging balcony, advancing age, and antiquated ameni-ties, Navy players, coaches, and fans unanimously agree: the old rink had character.

One of the most significant developments in Navy’s distinguished 40-year history occurred during the 1977-78 season. Steve Gordon, a local businessman, Northeastern University graduate, and then a Navy hockey coach ap-proached the Academy with a unique idea: Why not cre-ate an Annapolis, Maryland hockey tournament similar to the Beanpot hockey tournament held every year in Boston, Massachusetts.

Since 1952, four Boston area teams – Northeastern, Harvard, Boston University, and Boston College – have played in the Beanpot Tournament at the Boston Arena, the Boston Garden and now the TD Banknorth Garden.

“I thought we could have the same kind of tourna-ment at Navy,” Steve Gordon recalled, “so I went to the Academy with the idea. It seemed like a perfect fit. I knew we could make it a successful tradition here.”

So in February 1978, the Crabpot Tournament was born. Navy has claimed the tournament trophy 10 times, the last time coming in 2006. Through the years, numer-ous out-of-state teams have participated in the tournament along with local rival Towson University. Two years ago, in 2007-08, Steve Gordon’s original vision of having four local teams vie for the trophy finally came to fruition when Navy hosted Towson, the University of Maryland, and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC).

This February, the Mids will do battle with Towson, Maryland, and Salisbury University for the33rd annual Crabpot Tournament championship.

In the mid-1990’s, USNA alums Marty Carpenter (‘70) and Bruce Valley (’66) launched a booster club type organization to help support the Navy hockey program. By the late 1990’s, this fledgling organization had essen-tially been folded into the Friends of Navy Hockey (FNH), which was led at that time by CEO Allen Bass and president

Tom Quirk. Soon thereafter, Bruce Valley became FNH President, a position he successfully held until Rob Fergu-son (’71) took the helm in 2006. One year later, Valley re-turned for a brief four-month stint until Mike Budney (’80) was named president in December 2007.

“The goal of FNH is to help Navy Hockey become the best collegiate hockey program possible,” said current FNH president Budney, “and to support the development of the team to whatever competitive level Academy offi-cials and the Naval Academy Athletic Association deem appropriate.”

For most of its recent hockey history, Navy played its game at Dahlgren Hall and competed in the Eastern Col-legiate Hockey Association (ECHA). Several years ago, then-New Jersey Devils owner John McMullen (USNA class of ‘40) made a sizeable financial contribution to the Acad-emy for construction of a new hockey rink for the Mids. The Naval Academy Athletic Association, under the leadership of Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk, sought and obtained the additional funding to construct such a facility.

In the fall of 2007, the Naval Academy dedicated and opened the Thornton D. and Elizabeth S. Hooper Brigade Sports Complex, which includes the Dr. John J. McMullen Hockey Arena and the Tose Family Tennis Cen-ter. The 2007-08 Midshipmen not only christened the new

rink, but also made their debut in a newly created Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL), consisting of Delaware, Drexel, Penn State, Rhode Island, and, this sea-son, West Chester in addition to Navy.

In retrospect, it was a time of total transition for the hockey program. Charismatic coach Rick Randazzo, who earned 132 victories in eight seasons behind the bench, had stepped down and was replaced by his longtime assis-tant coach, Mike Fox. Starting the 2007-08 season, Navy had a new coach, a new building, and a new league.

In that inaugural campaign, Navy won 20 games for the second consecutive season. Last year, in their second full season in the new arena and the new league, the Mids finished with 15 wins.

This 2009-10 season marks the 40th season of com-petitive hockey at the Academy, and no one is prouder of that achievement than coach Fox.

“There are a lot of outstanding traditions here at the Naval Academy,” coach Fox said, “and the hockey pro-gram is among the best of them. I am both proud and honored to be serving as head coach in our 40th season. We are going to do everything we can to put a quality team on the ice for each and every game to bring further pride to the Navy hockey program, the Brigade of Midshipmen, the Academy community, and the city of Annapolis.”
