Welcome to the MEET 2008 Dear Friends and Colleagues, Today we have the honor and great pleasure to welcome you to the MEET 2008 Congress. During these four days, different topics will be presented focusing on endovascular therapies. The scientific program was specially tailored to resume all issues of your every day practice that would improve your knowledge and technical skills. As the MEET congress is now entering its 7th consecuti- ve year, it has been a great challenge for our Scientific Committee to maintain a primary platform for exchange of scientific and clinical information. The Auditorium features 10 plenary sessions on: veins topics (Session 1), abdominal and tho- racic aortic interventions (Sessions 2 and 3), lower limbs and renal arteries (Sessions 4, 5 and 7), caro- tid artery stenting (Carotid Course 1, 2 and 3) and the new frontiers in endovascular procedures & structural heart diseases (Session 6). Most of the sessions are illustrated by Recorded Live Cases performed by our Faculty, and followed by Crossfire Controversies. We have enriched the classic sessions’ scheme with “Additional Contributions”, remarkable lectures proposed by some of the free papers participants. There is no doubt that the MEET 2008 abstract competition gives a unique opportunity to young fellows to pre- sent their endovascular experience to an international audience. The Award ceremony will be held on Sunday at 11.00. As you know, one of our priorities is to generate an interactive ambiance and to allow all participants to discuss and share their point of view with international opinion leaders. To follow our objective, the Industry is organizing Luncheon symposia on Friday and Saturday at lunchtime. Lounges are set up to welcome a maximum of 60 participants. We invite you to join them and discover a wide range of topics, from basic science to clinical innovations. Moreover, some physicians will present their recorded live cases during the Video sessions at lunchtime in the Exhibition Hall. We are truly glad to welcome the Second Annual Joint Meeting of ISES and MEET on the ope- ning day. This course was intentionally elaborated in order to deliver a profound course on abdominal and thoracic aortic interventions and veins topics. We invite you to widen your focus of interest and to participate to a new session held for the first time this year: “New Frontiers in Endovascular Procedures & Structural Heart Diseases” on Friday June 27 at 14.30, chaired by Dr. Alain Cribier and Dr. Roy Greenberg. One of the MEET distinctive competences, the Carotid Course, will take place on Saturday. The agenda of the Course not only includes discussions on the technical and clinical aspects of the carotid artery stenting, but also a presentation of the latest clinical trials. Afterwards on Sunday, the MEET faculty members will share their extraordinary endovascular experience during the Challenging & Controversial Cases session, bringing closer to you their every day practice. Since managing the patient represents a significant challenge for the entire medical team, we conceived a specially tailored one-day course on French for Nurses and Technicians. Once again, welcome to the Martinez Hotel for this exciting MEET edition. We look forward to building tomorrow’s endovascular synergies together. Immediate and Mid-Term Clinical Outcome of Patients Treated with the « TwinOne® » Cerebral Protection System - Multicentric Trial : 209 cases.

J. Théron 1, C. Venturi 2, J. Reul 3, Z. Milosevic 4, L. Guimaraens 5, R. Beaujeux 6, P. Courtheoux 1, F. Bedogni 7

Background and Purpose: There are several cerebral protection devices used for carotid artery stenting. All of them require a

two different materials (cerebral protection device + dilatation balloon), making the procedure longer andwith possible complications like vasospasm or embolism. The new system is an evolution of the cerebral pro-tection concept and allows temporary occlusion of the distal internal carotid during carotid artery stentingprocedures with both materials in one device. We present our experience using this new device.

Methods: 209 patients symptomatic and asymptomatic have been treated by carotid artery stenting using the

TwinOne® for embolic protection limited to post-dilatation phase. Results: Of the 209 patients treated therehave been 4 peri-procedural cases of complications (1.9%): 3 permanent (1 in-stent thrombosis, 1 presumedclotting, 1 ipsilateral stroke with uncertain root cause) and 1 transient complication attributable to heart fai-lure. There have been 2 in-hospital complications (0.95%), 1 permanent of unclear origin, and 1 transientcontralateral incident. No additional complication has been reported at 30 days after CAS procedure.

Conclusions: This cerebral protection system is simple to use, allows a quick intervention and reduced occlusion

time, with a low rate of complications.
