Welcome We are sorry you are not able to join with us in

person but we hope this online experience will provide an introduction to our program and help to build a solid foundation for the FEP internship.

On the next slide, you will see a quote that we believe is important and sets the tone for this mentoring session.

Fall, 2009

“We Americans think you have to

accomplish everything quickly. We’re

a country of thirty-minute power

lunches and two- minute football drills….

Haji Ali taught me to share three cups

of tea, to slow down and make building

relationships as important as building projects.

He taught me that I had more to learn from the people I work with than I could ever hope to teach them.”

~Greg Mortenson, Three Cups of Tea

• Theory

• Practice

• Reflection

• Mentoring

Rigorous Coursework provides new knowledge and opportunities for reflection.

Internships offer the chance to develop new skills and test out theoretical frames in real-life situations.

FEP: The Integration of Learning Domains

Reflection provides an inner eye, a way of seeing differently.

Supervisors provide the most critical component by offering insight and expertise on issues rarely covered in a textbook

Great Expectations

• Although we enter most relationships with expectations, we rarely explicitly state them.

• Unmet expectations are one of the biggest challenges in formal mentoring relationships.

• We would like to spend some time thinking about and explicitly sharing your expectations for this semester.

And finally, listen to Kenny’s few last comments. They are worthwhile.
