A focus for the ACT Government’s business development agenda is providing targeted and active support for trade and investment. A growing and successful business community feeds a strong economy, provides opportunities for our citizens and creates a positive environment as a smart and vibrant city.

The ACT Chief Minister’s Export Awards engages directly with the ACT and Region exporting community and provides it with a great opportunity to share success stories and enhance their international business strategies. The ACT Chief Minister’s Export Awards identify and celebrate innovators in our exporting community and highlight their achievements, showcasing their strengths and capacities to Australia and the world.

Canberra is a globally connected city and we have significant opportunities ahead of us to build on our unique advantages and grow our international profile. The ACT Government has a clear ambition to connect Canberra and the region with places, markets and sectors where we have shared interests.

Aspen Medical – Health & Biotechnology

Founded in 2003, Aspen Medical rapidly established its model for success - supplying expert health professionals combined with outstanding project management capability. Aspen Medical has become an international “go to” company for governments and INGOs when delivering health in challenging environments - from Ebola Centres in Africa to trauma hospitals in Mosul, reducing surgical lists in the UK to supporting the resources sector across the globe. The company has grown from the two founders to over 1,088 team members operating in sixteen countries on three continents providing primary and emergency healthcare, medical training, consultancy, medevac, clinics and ambulance services.

Biometix – Digital Technologies I Small Business

Biometix was established in 1998 by Dr Ted Dunstone as a way to pursue his dream of working in emerging technologies, including biometrics. In 2002, Biometix implemented the SmartGate prototype, the world’s first biometric automated border system as part of a global trend towards heightened security post 9/11. Since then, Biometix has been working at the forefront of biometrics, conducting world-leading research and applying this knowledge to products and projects across the globe.

Canberra Cavalry – Education & Training I Small Business I Emerging Exporter

The Cavalry was formed in 2010 to compete in the Australian Baseball League, which is Australia’s premier professional baseball league. The motivation was to give Canberran baseballers a platform to gain exposure in the international baseball marketplace. The Cavalry won the ABL Championship in 2012/13, led by a Canberran coaching staff and strong cohort of Canberran players. The team also won the 2013 Asia Series, which showed that Canberra is a force in international baseball. These high-profile victories provided a profile boost that resulted in multiple signings of Canberran players to international clubs.

CLS Capital Link Services – Business Services

From humble beginnings, Naim and Triza Ibraheim discovered a need for a Canberra based service provider to navigate the complex process of travel visa issuance, legalisation of documentation, and consular services for the Australian travel and export market. Twenty-two years later, CLS is now Australia and New Zealand’s leading independent provider of visa processing and document legalisation. CLS maintains its roots in Canberra, allowing us to continue to provide an incomparable service working closely with diplomatic missions, federal government agencies and Canberra based service providers to meet the needs of our growing clients as a Canberra based service exporter.

EOS Defence Systems – Manufacturing

Electro Optic Systems Pty Limited (EOS) is an Australian Defence and Space company founded in 1983 and publicly listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 2003. The company was founded from the privatisation of Commonwealth of Australia space activity and is now a world-leader in Space Situational Awareness and Remote Weapon Systems (RWS). The Defence division of the company, EOS Defence Systems (EOS DS), commenced operation in the late 1980s when they pioneered the development of RWS for land vehicles under contract with the US Army, by incorporating their space-related technology (sensors, lasers and stabilisation software) into the system.

Funnelback – Digital Technologies

CSIRO established Funnelback in 2005 when it spun-off its search technology team into a separate company. The goal of the spin-off was to maximise the research impact by commercialising the technology and furthering innovation through increased R&D investment. Funnelback was successfully acquired in 2009 by Australian company Squiz. Expansions into the UK (2009) and US (2016) followed, resulting in a 45% market share of UK universities and high profile customers such as Southwest Airlines, Indiana Government, and University of Cambridge. In 2017, leading industry analyst Gartner recognised Funnelback a visionary in the Insight Engines market.

Garlicious® Grown – Exporting to Asia I Regional Exporter

Garlicious® Grown is well known for award winning, chemical free quality gourmet black garlic cloves and black garlic powder range. Black garlic is caramelised white garlic, a high antioxidant gourmet superfood. Founded by Jenny Daniher and Cathy Owen, they are a thriving Australian owned business growing in Braidwood NSW. They used ingenuity and farming and science backgrounds to develop a commercially viable method of production. Garlicious® Grown is built on values of quality, pleasure and adaptability to opportunity.

GymAware – Digital Technologies I E-Commerce I Small Business

Kinetic Performance Technology (KPT) is a Canberra based company established in 2002 which developed GymAware. Addressing the growing desire to engage athletes in the weights room, in 2013 GymAware’s user interface was replaced. This new UI propelled GymAware into hundreds of college weights rooms across the US which were desperate for athlete motivation as well as performance monitoring.

Savvy Technical Solutions – Emerging Exporter I Manufacturing I E-Commerce I Small Business

Savy Technical Solutions was born from a group of engineers headed by Patrick Howe. Patrick wanted to create a viable system of engineering solutions and new innovation from Australia to export worldwide. From conception to sales, he wanted the ownership of the ideas to stay as much in the creators hands as possible - making a viable first key milestone was SavvyLevel - born from frustration when camping and knowing that there must be a better way to get level. So, they created it! Using the SavvyLevel system only one person is required to level effortlessly to their own pre-set level.

Seeing Machines – Digital Technologies

Seeing Machines is an Australian publicly listed, award-winning company, headquartered in Canberra, Australia, with offices and people in Australia, UK, North America, Europe, Singapore and Japan. Founded at the Australian National University, Seeing Machines is world-renowned as an industry leader in computer vision-based technologies, which enable machines to see, understand and assist people.

Sentinel – Environmental Solutions

Sentinel was founded by Rod Sandison in 2000 as an environmental monitoring and consulting company. With continued demand for Sentinel’s expertise, Sentinel has grown to a very successful SME which currently employs ten staff. Sentinel is a mixture of highly experienced field hydrographers, technical assistants, software developers and dedicated administration staff. Sentinel provides both services and software to the market. They design, implement, operate and maintain environmental monitoring networks, and offer a customisable data management package, DataSight.

Sustineo – Business Services I Small Business

Established in 2010, Sustineo specialised in tailored, high-quality, advisory and research services. The vision was a values-based, research-oriented firm delivering high-value knowledge services for international development assistance. Initially providing general consulting services in Australia and Asia-Pacific, international success fuelled growth in the last 3 years. Their research has been published by Routledge, recognised and sought by UN organisations, and had an impact in areas such as equal representation of women in Solomon Islands parliament, understanding crime in PNG, and advanced competition policy in the Philippines.

Instaclustr – Digital Technologies I Emerging Exporter

Instaclustr is a Canberra-based technology company that has developed a fully managed platform and operating environment for building and deploying next-generation applications in the cloud. The platform provides customers with access to the leading open source data-centric technologies for integration into their applications and solutions. The company has grown from initially supporting startups and small deployments, to now having some of the largest and most technically sophisticated companies in the world as customers.

iSimulate – Education & Training

iSimulate launched its medical training software system in 2012 at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) conference in the USA and is now used in over 48 countries. The founders held a vision to provide smart solutions to keep life going and in just over 6 years have become a market leader delivering tools that support training of critical care providers in hospitals and other acute care environments.

ITP Renewables – Exporting to Asia I Environmental Solutions I Minerals, Energy & Related Services

ITP Renewables (ITP) is a global leader in renewable energy engineering, strategic consulting, construction and energy analytics. Since 2003, ITP Renewables has expanded into NSW, South Australia, Victoria and NZ. ITP has always focused on providing specialist advice and engineering services for renewable energy projects in developing countries – supporting international aid agencies, governments and local communities to build reliable and affordable energy supply systems.

ONTHEGO® Sports – Exporting to Asia I Digital Technologies I E-Commerce I ManufacturingONTHEGO® is the brainchild of founder and entrepreneur Mick Spencer. Founded in 2012 with a mission to disrupt the long lead time, heavy supply chain custom apparel and uniform industry, through an advanced technology ecosystem that connected manufacturers to customers through a digital platform. OTG went from a garage to seeing great success in less than 6 years. OTG is now a multi award winning platform used by many people in many regions, with a mission to be the global leader of mass customisation in apparel.

TelSoft – Exporting to Asia I Business Services I Digital Technologies I Regional Exporter I Small Business

TelSoft’s success was driven by the innovation of linking different domains within the telecom company: finance, technology and customer management. Founder, Dr. Anthony de Silva, started TelSoft in 2000, building on his knowledge and experience in telecommunications, and developed an innovative approach to data analysis. By 2002, the first major project with Telekom Indonesia was won. From the very beginning, Dr de Silva pioneered the use of a strategic IT application in telecommunications for granular analysis and optimization. This was at the forefront of the Big Data Analytics boom that we now observe in many industries.

ThinkPlace – Exporting to Asia I Business Services

ThinkPlace is a global design network founded in 2005 in the ACT, comprising of studios across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Kenya and the United States. ThinkPlace uses a patented design system to create change at a systems level. Whether it’s digital transformation in Singapore, renewable energy innovation in Australia or tackling street homelessness in New Zealand, they collaborate with governments, companies and Non-Government Organisations to co-design lasting transformations.

Thylacine Exhibition Design – Exporting to Asia I Creative Industries

Thylacine Design and Project Management delivers planning, design, fabrication and installation of interpretive and educational projects including exhibitions, interactives, public art and cultural projects across Australia and New Zealand. Recent projects to receive national and international awards include Container for the Australian National Maritime Museum, Encounters for the National Museum of Australia and Voyage to the Deep for the Australian Maritime Museum.
