Phonics Screening Check

The phonics screening check is a short assessment to confirm whether

individual children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate

standard.

It will identify the children who need extra help, so they are given

support to improve their reading skills.

In June, Year 1 children and any child in Year 2 who failed or did

not sit the year 1 phonics screening check, has a phonics screening

check.

What is Read, Write Inc?

Developed by Ruth Miskin.

A dynamic whole-school literacy programme rooted in

synthetic phonics.

Offers a transformational approach to teaching literacy

which raises results and behaviour standards across the

whole school.

RWI Phonics

• Aimed at 4 – 7 year old children learning to read and

write (Year R – 2).

• Catch up for 7 – 8 year olds (Year 2).

• It is proven to develop:

1. fluent, enthusiastic readers,

2. deep comprehension of texts

3. confident speakers

4. keen writers.

Fred Talk As soon as the children know a group of sounds they are introduced to a

character called Fred.

Fred knows that there are 44 sounds in our language. He knows that sounds

must be very pure and distinct so children can sound blend.
