Flashy SplasHyPINTOSA Pinto. What’s that?, you ask. Is it a bean?Is it a car? How about a horse?
Yup. It’s all of these things. For horselovers, Pinto Horses are those
unmistakably beautifully colored horseseach with a pattern all of their own. They are horses that are named fortheir colorful coat patterns, not abreed. In fact, they can be just aboutany breed.
Their colorful coats have fascinatedpeople for thousands of years. Drawn onwalls of caves, and found on brokenpieces of Egyptian pottery, the attractionto colorful horses is part of our historywith horses.
So, when you see a colorful Pinto do you wonder…are they whitewith black spots or black with white spots? Good Question!
The Pinto Horse Association of America recognizes two colorpatterns - Tobiano and Overo. The Tobiano coat appears white withlarge flowing spots of color which often overlap. Spots of color startfrom the head, chest, flank and buttock and can include the tail too.
The Overo coat describes a colored horse with white markings.Spots of white are jagged and usually start on the horse’s side or bellyand spread toward the neck, tail, legs and back. White almost never
crosses the back.So... are they black with white
markings, or white with blackmarkings? They could be either. Itdoesn’t matter though, becausethese flashy, splashy horses areshow stoppers and great all-around horses.

Welcome to theWonderful World
of PINTOSHi Kids! It’s me Blaze,
your trusty Blaze magazine mascot.
I’m so excited to introduce you to another one of myawesome horse cousins. The Pinto family is just amaz-
ing. The word “Pinto” actually means spotted. Pintosaren’t actually a breed of horse, but rather a type of horsewith specific color patterns!
Pintos have a rich family history. One of the most askedquestions about “patterns” is about the “medicine hat.” Thewhat?, you might ask.
A horse marked by the medicine hat is white except for a“hat” of color over their ears and forehead. It comes froman American Indian legend that says that horses born withthis coloration were sacred and cherished horses in thetribe’s herd.
Although the Pinto Horse Association of Americaaccepts horses of many different breeds, even a RockyMountain like me, my solid coloring means I can not be aPinto. Oh well, we’re still family and we can still be friends!
