WELLINGTON AFC Club History

Formed in 1892 we are proud to be an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially the Club played in leagues based around Taunton and Tiverton. In the early 1960s it gained promotion to the Somerset Senior League and succeeded in achieving Western League status in 1978 which has been retained ever since, making the Club one of the League’s longest continuously serving members. The First Team entered the Western League in the First Division in 1978/79 season and has played at Premier Division level from 1981/82 to 1984/85 and 2008/09 to 2010/11. The team were promoted as First Division Champions at the end of the 2016/17 season. In their first season back in the in Premier Division the team finished a creditable 15th, they also reached the semi-final of the Somerset Premier Cup losing 4-1 away to Southern League Paulton Rovers. Last season the team finished in 16th place but are hoping to improve on this in the forthcoming season. All other seasons were played at Division One level. The Club’s Reserve side play in the Devon and Exeter League Division One. Having finished eighth for two seasons, unfortunately, the team struggled during the 2017/18 season and last season improved to once again finish in eighth place and will play at the same level this year. Having played in the Devon and Exeter League for a number of seasons the A Team transferred to Division Three of the Taunton Saturday League last season where they finished a very creditable third and could be promoted to Division Two for the forthcoming season. The Club’s Ladies side finished ninth in the Somerset County Women’s League First Division last season but, with the introduction of new players are hoping to improve this season. The team play a full role in both the playing and non-playing aspects of the club. This season the Club will be running 21 teams in its Youth and Mini Sections. These teams see both boys and girls playing from the age of eight right through to eighteen. The Club also has three Disability teams. Six of the Youth Teams won the Sportsmanship Awards for their Age Groups last season and the Disability Teams won the Somerset FA Award for Disability Club of the Year. During the last year the Club launched its new website – www.wellingtonafc.co.uk and is making full use of its Facebook and Twitter accounts which have all proved very successful.

We continue to work with the local Council’s and Wellington Sports Federation on the Taunton Deane Pitch Strategy which will hopefully result in the Club moving to a larger ground and bring the majority of football pitches in the town to one site. Outside of its core footballing activities the Club is home to several darts and skittles teams and it runs a full programme of social events for members and non-members alike. The Function Room and Lounge are available for hire. (Please contact the Clubhouse Manager – Jenny Oxby on 01823 665410 for details)

MATCH REPORT

WELLINGTON 0 5 SHEPTON MALLET

Wellington are still looking for their first win under new boss Tim Legg after a bad day at the office against Shepton Mallet. Legg was left with massive job when 12 members of the first team squad followed previous manager Clive Jones out of the club and he has worked hard to bring in new players – with three more taking the pitch against Shepton. But, following their poor start to the season, they now need to start picking up points to pull themselves away from the drop zone. It all looked so promising as they attacked from the kick-off and almost took the lead in the opening minutes. A fine diagonal pass by Ollie Holman found George Sinnott in space on the left and he advanced on goal before his low shot was saved by keeper Jonny Hill. Unfortunately, that proved a false dawn for Wellington as Shepton gradually took control of the game to run out worthy winners. Shortly after defender Josh Pearson had limped off on the half-hour, the visitors took the lead from a textbook header by Daryl Charman and they doubled their lead five minutes before the break when a free-kick into the box ended up in the net with Charman claiming the final touch. Legg introduced experienced winger Ian Bellinger for the second half in an effort to take the game to Shepton but his side were pegged back continually and conceded three more goals. Jack Fillingham turned home a low cross to make it 3-0 after 55 minutes and scored again ten minutes later as a through ball sliced open the Wellington defence and left him on his own to run on and net. The striker should have had completed his hat-trick in the 70th minute when a bad back-pass left him one-on-one with Tom Welch but the keeper blocked his effort. Shepton had already beaten Wellington twice this season - in the FA Vase and the league - and they were not to be denied a fifth goal. With 14 minutes remaining another low cross was converted, this time by sub Joe Morgan. It was the worst display by Wellington since Legg took charge but at least they have a run of home games as they bid to end their losing run.

EXTRACT FROM TOOLSTATION BULLETIN

8th December 2019

Midweek League Action: Two goals from Jack Fillingham helped fire Shepton Mallet to a 4-2 victory over Buckland in the Premier Division on Tuesday night. Fillingham’s first goal midway through the first half put the home side two-up following Tyrone Tucker-Dixon’s eighth minute effort, before Richard Groves pulled a goal back from the spot. Shepton restored their two-goal advantage just before the break, with Buckland hitting back once more when Lloyd Gardner’s corner was met by a powerful headed finish from Kai Fisher. With the away side pushing hard for a late equaliser, Shepton were awarded a penalty from a breakaway, and Fillingham beat the keeper to wrap up all three points. At Fairfax Park, Keynsham capitalised on an early red card to claim a 1-1 draw against Bridgwater Town. The home side made a great start to the game, and after Jack Taylor was brought down in the area, Jake Llewellyn scored his 21st consecutive penalty to make it 1-0. Just a couple of moments later, Dave Pearse was given a straight red card to reduce the hosts to ten men, and Keynsham managed to get level just before half-time thanks to captain Michael Grist. Bridgwater pushed hard after the interval, but were unable to break down the resolute K’s defence, setting up Saturday’s reverse fixture perfectly. In a crucial basement battle, Chipping Sodbury Town defeated Odd Down 2-1 to gain ground on their relegation rivals, with Dan Brown and Jack Parker both scoring in the opening 15 minutes. 24 hours later, Cadbury Heath secured their first win in eight matches, defeating Roman Glass St George 2-1 at Springfield. Midweek Cup Action: -In the first round of Les Phillips Cup, Exmouth Town overturned an early deficit to beat Plymouth Parkway 4-1. The away side made an excellent start to the game, leading after seven minutes thanks to Antonio Costa, but a trio of red cards and a sin bin saw them unravel, with Ben Steer, Jordan Harris and Mark Lever all finding the back of the net to help Exmouth progress. Premier Division: Bradford Town laid down an early marker ahead of their FA Vase meeting, after they snuck a 1-0 win over Buckland. The Bobcats have now won six games on the bounce away from Trowbridge Road following their latest triumph, with a goal from Will Hailston leading them past a resolute Buckland side. Things proved to be a little simpler for Tavistock, who scored four first half goals on their way to a 7-1 thumping of Brislington. Following 23 goalless minutes, the

Page 19: WELCOME TO THE PLAYING FIELD - Wellington AFC...WELLINGTON AFC Club History Formed in 1892 we are proud to be an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially the Club played in leagues

game came to life, with Jordan Annear and Josh Grant scoring in quick succession to put the away side two-up. Neikell Plummer then pulled a goal back for Brislington, but they conceded twice more, firstly to Grant and then to Jack Crago to trail by three at the interval. Tavistock continued pressing during the second half, adding three further goals thanks to Dan Evans, Callum Watson and the prolific Crago. High-scoring away victories seemed to be common place on Saturday, with Clevedon and Shepton Mallet both prevailing by 5-0 scorelines. Archie Ferris was the standout performer for Clevedon, bagging a hat-trick during his side’s victory over Cribbs, with a Zach Drew long ranger adding some gloss to the final score during the second half. Wellington were on the wrong side of Shepton’s big win, with a pair of Daryl Charman headers leading the visitors to a two-goal lead at the interval. The second half was all about Jack Fillingham, with the Mallet forward scoring a brace to extend his team’s advantage to four, before he laid on the assist for Joe Morgan who completed the scoring in the closing stages. Roman Glass St George picked up their first league win since late October, coming back from an early deficit to defeat Bitton 3-1. The shell-shocked hosts fell behind in the opening minute of the game when Matt Groves fired home, but managed to get back on level terms when Ryan Radford struck from the penalty spot after he had been fouled in the box. A Troy Simpson goal then handed Roman Glass a 2-1 half-time lead, with Liam Harding scoring the fourth and final goal of the game 20 minutes from time. Plymouth Parkway survived a slight scare at home to Bridport, with top scorer Adam Carter striking twice during their 3-1 win at Bolitho Park. The hosts made a strong start, and led after just 17 minutes when Craig Duff headed home from a corner. Struggling Bridport then managed to get level on the half-hour mark through Tony Pinder, but that goal seemed to kick-start Parkway back into life, with Carter scoring a quick-fire double at the end of the first half to wrap up victory. Exmouth Town’s formidable defensive record shows no sign of letting up, after they battled out a goalless draw with Hallen. The Devon side have conceded just seven goals from their 12 league fixtures, while Hallen will be pleased to have become the first away side to claim any points away at Exmouth this season. In the day’s early kick-off, Jake Brown’s 8th minute goal handed Bridgwater a 1-0 win away at Keynsham, while a pair of Leighton Thomas efforts saw Street secure a 2-1 victory over Chipping Sodbury Town. At Meadow Lane, Cadbury Heath registered back-to-back league wins for the first time this season, with Enis Akgun playing a starring role in their 2-0 victory over Westbury. Akgun started by handing the visitors a 31st minute lead, before he then provided the assist for Ben Allen who made it 2-0 during the final ten minutes of the contest.

MACRON DEVON & EXETER LEAGUE - DIVISION ONE NEWTON ST JOHN 1 10 WELLINGTON RESERVES

Wellington Reserves were far too strong for a depleted Tipton St John side who currently sit bottom of the division. Wellington made the perfect start when Paolo Borges played in Josh Champion who crossed for Liam Thorne to tap in after just ten minutes. It was soon 2-0 when Champion finished well after Thorne had hit the post. Wellington were now running riot and ran in four more before half time, Thorne and Borges adding one more each and Champion also completing his hat-trick. Unfortunately Wellington switched off with minutes of the first half remaining and conceded so a third straight clean sheet eluded them. The second half was more of the same. Borges scored two more to complete his hat-trick and there were also goals for defenders Tom Davies and Danny Nicholls. This was a clinical and ruthless display and a third win on the trot which sees Wellington slowly climb the league although there will be far tougher tests in the coming weeks. Team: Hall, Holmes, Fleet, Davies, Nicholls, Champion, Wescott, Holmans, Mace, Borges, Thorne. Subs: Poulsom, Saunders, Broomhead

INVEST SOUTHWEST TAUNTON SATURDAY LEAGUE DIVISION TWO

WELLINGTON A 2 2 BRIDGWATER GRASSHOPPERS 1ST

Wellington A hosted Bridgwater Grasshoppers at fortress Rec with the opportunity to open up a commanding lead at the top of division two. Welly were welcomed by the return of Tom Scarlett and, in the absence of Tenny Harlow, assistant manager Will Hammond stepped up to the plate with the knowledge that Grasshoppers had lost their last two games 7-0 and 4-0. However, Welly soon realised that they were not facing an opposition playing like they'd shipped 11 goals in their last outings. A tight, narrow midfield caused problems in the middle for the Tangerine Army but Welly were able to use width to create one on one chances which should have been taken.

Page 22: WELCOME TO THE PLAYING FIELD - Wellington AFC...WELLINGTON AFC Club History Formed in 1892 we are proud to be an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially the Club played in leagues

Welly did take the lead when Scarlett rounded the keeper. It was a lead they could not hold at half-time however as, despite Sully Harlow's best efforts, he could not keep out a sharp volley from a Grasshoppers corner so the teams were level. Changes were made at the break and, after strong words from a frustrated management, Welly controlled the second half but somehow managed to find themselves 2-1 down when Grasshoppers benefited from a fortunate deflection after Harlow had initially closed down an attack. Now facing defeat, the Tangerine Army must be praised for continuing to press forward and equalised through a well-deserved goal from Jordan Sellick to end his recent drought, assisted by manager Luke O’Hara. Welly pushed for a winner but substitute Joey Conway couldn't finish off a late opportunity. It is testament to this side that there was much frustration at full time that a win had not been achieved. However, the team must move on and look forward to getting back to winning ways with a sharp reminder for the management that there is no easy opposition in this division.
