Welcome to the programme of the 2018 Dartmoor Walking Festival! The first ever Dartmoor Walking Festival in 2016 was a great success and the very positive feedback really supported the idea of it becoming an annual event which is absolutely fabulous. Therefore Moorland Guides again ran it in 2017 during the same week and once again the public voted with their feet – literally – and it seems that the festival is here to stay! The 2018 event will be held from Saturday 25th September until Sunday 2nd September inclusive which means that this will be the last bank holiday week of the summer. This year we are teaming-up with the Dartmoor-365 Facebook group who have over 7,000 followers and so attract many more potential walkers. All of the events will be labelled according to the grid in the Dartmoor 365 book by John Hayward which is enjoying a resurgence of popularity. Check the festival website for exact details of the 365 coordinates visited.
In 2017 the festival raised over £500 for the Donate to Dartmoor fund as well as the Dartmoor Search Dogs and this coming year we will be linking up with the Devon Air Ambulance with a series of varied sponsored walks on the last day of the festival. We will be putting on several events each day during the nine-day festival ranging from modest guided strolls and children’s rambles to full day walks and ambitious challenges! There really will be something for everyone including ‘accessible’ events for the less mobile in partnership with the ‘Disabled Ramblers’ Association.

More comprehensive details and descriptions of each walk can also be found on the website. Some events are dog-friendly but not all, so do please take care to ensure you read the details of each event carefully. Likewise some guides need you to book in advance for their events and this is clearly stated in the programme. Each event has the details of the leader and contact details in case of any questions you may have. It is important that you come properly dressed for the conditions and prevailing weather. Guides have the right to decline taking anyone on an event if they feel that welfare or safety is compromised for any reason. For the purposes of costs for walks – where a fee is charged, children are under 16 years of age. Some of the car parks within the National Park charge a fee so come with a few pound coins just in case. Join the Dartmoor Walking Festival on our final day which is
reserved for our three sponsored walks and well as the three accessible events – making it a day of walks & wheels! The walks will be 2.5 miles, 5 miles and also 10 miles in length, led by qualified guides. You can decide which walk you would like to join in on. Registration forms can be completed online and sent in to us and we will post you a sponsorship form. Kris Budge is coordinating and registering all the various sponsored walks and events on the day. She can be contacted by email at [email protected] and by phone on 01822 615338 You must register to do these events so we know you are coming please. All the events start at 10am at the start location mentioned in the walk details which follow, then at lunchtime (12:30pm) the events will hopefully converge at Princetown to all meet up for a publicity event for the Air Ambulance. The 2.5 mile route finishes in Princetown at lunchtime but the 5 and 10 mile route will then start off again after lunch on their return journey back to their start points. The accessible events for trampers etc will start at Princetown at 10am as well and will be led out along the old railways line by guides to the various locations according to the difficulty of the route. Let the guides know which accessible grade of difficulty route you are choosing when you arrive
