Jondaryan Woolshed Classic – 30th April to 2nd May, was a great event and enjoyed by all that attended.

Thursday rides depart River Cruz at 10.00am unless otherwise specified via email or on our website. General Business: Neil spoke about the Compass Expeditions presentation at the River Cruz Café - 7th May at 2.00pm. He said that he would like to see good support from our branch for this – other branches are attending and it would be disappointing if there were only a few Bundaberg branch members attending. Gympie branch are having a 3 day Lazy Weekend at the Imbil Island Reach Camping Resort on the 27th to 29th May, so if you missed out on the good weekend that we had at the Jondaryan Woolshed Classic, here’s another opportunity to get the camping gear out. Several Bundaberg branch members are already down to go. Neil said that he would send out another email about this one or you can check the May newsletter. Looks to be a nice spot – check out the website; http://www.islandreach.com.au/

Cania Gorge weekend – 7th to 9th October: Jill gave an update on this event. This will be bigger and better, and other Branches will be joining us as well. If you want any more information on this event, contact Jill or check our website. Start thinking about where we could have our next Christmas party: Wondai, Hivesville, or somewhere else. Jill updated us on what information she had so far from Wondai, Hivesville and Many Peaks. Chris and Sheryl are looking into another venue for us and will let us know next meeting. If you have any other suggestions please research thoroughly before letting Jill know. We will make a joint decision at the July meeting.

MARI information: Jill informed us that she hasn’t any new information to share. There was nothing else to share so we closed the meeting at 7.25pm. Our next meeting will be Tuesday 7th June, 2016, same place, same time.

Rainbow Beach – 10th April, 2016

When Gympie Ulysses spotted this ride on our website calendar, I got a call from Wayne Wessling, their ride coordinator, about them going in for a combined ride, suggesting that they meet up with us at Sexie Coffee. So the plan was put into action. Day started with 7 bikes & riders plus 2 pillions gathering at River Cruz Café for breakfast or just coffee, before departing at 9.00am for our first stop at Sexie Coffee. The ride was via Goodwood Road and onto the Bruce Highway, following it south to Maryborough and our first stop, being mindful that it was the last day of the school holidays, and that the traffic and police presence will be elevated. Wayne and 7 Gympie Branch members were already at Sexie Coffee when we arrived, as well as the Wide Bay Chapter of HOG, who were also going to Rainbow Beach for lunch. As there were 20 – 30 HOG members, I thought it best to ring ahead and book a table for lunch at the Surf Life Saving Club. Just as well, as it turned out that they too were also having lunch at the Rainbow Beach SLSC. By now the temp was starting to climb, so instead of the usual coffee’s, most were opting for iced coffees, milkshakes & smoothies whilst we did our meet and greet with the Gympie Branch. As it neared 11.00am, it was time to continue the ride, as the Wide Bay HOG members had already departed some 20 minutes earlier and should have settled in and ordered lunch by the time we arrive at the SLSC. The run down the Cooloola Coast road was relaxing with minimal traffic to contend with, but the road to Rainbow Beach was just the opposite, with still quite a few tourists in the area, towing vans and campers in both directions. When we arrived at the SLSC, there wasn’t many parking spots left, but we still managed to find spots to park, just not altogether. As we signed into the club, it turned out that we were early for our lunch booking, so we got some cool drinks and sat out on the veranda at the end of the building and enjoyed the ocean breeze until our table was readied. Despite the large crowd at the club, it didn’t take the kitchen staff long to serve up our lunches, and as I didn’t hear any complaints about the quality and quantity, I’ll give another thumbs up for the club and its service. During lunch, Ron Laycock of Bauple extended an invitation to Bundaberg & Gympie Branches for a BBQ at his place, where we could look over his collection of jet and rocket powered motorcycles and trucks. He didn’t actually say that he would start any of them up, but you never know. Ron is going to liaise with Gympie branch for a date, and I suggested that a Thursday would probably suit Bundaberg branch best. That also suited Gympie branch as well. At around 2.30pm, we decided it was time to start heading for home, so we bid farewell to the Gympie branch members in the carpark, mounted up and headed back towards Maryborough via the same route as in the morning. At Sexie Coffee, we topped up the fuel tanks at the servo, and again most opted for a cool drink rather than a hot coffee, and a final bit of chit chat before heading for home. I would like to thank Russel S, Greg D, Wayne C, Dave B, James & Kingsley P, and Jill C from Bundaberg branch, plus Wayne Wessling, Peter Palis, and the other Gympie branch members for an enjoyable combined ride day, which I know we’ll do again soon. Kingaroy (Proston) 24/04/2016 When Dave Causer of Burnett Branch noted on our website that we were doing a Sunday ride to Kingaroy, he contacted me to see if we wanted to do a combined ride and BBQ. He suggested that instead of going to Kingaroy, that we make it Proston, and have a BBQ at Rod Kirkman’s place (their branch president). This we agreed to and we arranged to meetup on the day at Ban Ban Springs. With prefect riding weather, we started the day at Quay Street with only a small number of riders 4 and 1 pillion (Jill) turning up for the ride, but as it turned out, Rocky was only going as far a Ban Ban Springs, so he could test out his latest jetting setting on his bike. With breakfast and coffee at the café consumed, we mounted up and headed out past the airport, through Isis Mill, down North South road, and through Biggenden to the servo at Ban Ban Springs. There already was Jill Seeley, along with 20+ Burnett Branch members, who as it turned out had only arrived about a couple of minutes before us. Over the next 20 odd minutes, we did a meet-and-greet, topped up fuel tanks, quenched thrusts, emptied bladders, and finally mounting up again, with myself leading the ride through to Hivesville. At Hivesville, Dave took over the lead, and guided us the remaining 10klms to Rod’s place.

For an older home, I thought Rod’s place was brilliant, with an outdoor entertainment area that was decorated with items of Australian history (old stuff to some), plus a solid timber round table and bar, that must have weighed a ton. Already setup was plenty of additional tables / chairs, a table with all of the BBQ food (enough to feed an army), plus a drinks fridge fully stocked. With the Burnett Branch members making us very welcome, it wasn’t long before we were seated and socialising, whilst Rod got the BBQ up and going to cook up the meat and onions, etc. At the end of lunch, a couple of speeches were made, where I thanked Rod and the Burnett Branch for the fantastic BBQ they had put on, and apologised for the small turn out of Bundaberg Branch members. Maybe next time we can do better. It was also Rods 60th birthday, and the branch members presented him with a Ulysses 60th age badge. Maybe this is something that we should be doing; I wonder who is turning 60 this year?

At close to 2.00pm, it was time of us to head for home, so we made our goodbyes, mounted up and headed back to Ban Ban Springs. There we did another fuel top up, bid goodbye to Jill (she lives at Gayndah), and returned to Bundy via the same route as in the morning.

I’d like to thank Greg D, Dave B, Jill S, Jill C, Rocky (who rode part of the way), and the Burnett Branch members for making it a great and enjoyable combined ride and BBQ. To the rest of the Bundaberg Branch members, you missed out on what it is to be an Ulyssesian;

ANZAC Day - Woodgate - 2016

An overcast and windy day saw 13 bikes / riders; 3 with pillions assemble at Quay Street for the ride down to Woodgate, for the 2016 mid-morning ANZAC Day ceremony. As well as remembering the landing at Gallipoli 101 years ago, it is also a day on which we remember all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service. This year, the Woodgate community were also celebrating their 20th year of ANZAC Day ceremonies, where their memorial stone was unveiled back in 1996.

We departed Quay Street at 8.30am, and made our way out to Goodwood road, following it through to Goodwood, and then onto Woodgate, mindful of the wind gusts which were strong at times. We arrived at the Memorial Community Park on the Esplanade at around 9.15am, so we had plenty of time for catching up with other members and friends before the start of the ceremony at 10.00am.

As with all mid-morning ceremonies, it started with the parade march which was made up with active and returned service men, service women, family member’s representing those who are no longer with us or unable to march, community service persons, and the Goodwood School students.

Following the parade was the ceremony itself, where it was mentioned that the number of persons attending seemed to be growing with each year. During the ceremony, a flyover was made by a P51/D Mustang, making several runs along the Esplanade before continuing onto Elliott Heads for the ceremony being held there. Also during the ceremony, Ian Lawley did the honour of laying the wreath on behalf of the Bundaberg Ulysses Branch.

At the conclusion, everyone was invited to make their way over to the Woodgate Community hall for refreshments, a sing along, or to view a video that was made 20 years ago of the first Woodgate ANZAC Day ceremony. Steak & sausage sandwiches, as well as cold drinks were also available. By midday, we decided it was time to depart, and we mounted up and headed for home. Just before we left, one of the ladies from the Woodgate RSL sub-branch said that they loved having us there each year, so I assured her that we’ll be returning again in 2017.

Jondaryan Woolshed Classic Motorcycle Rally 30th April – 2nd May

Recently there have been expressions of interest from within our branch for a second long weekend camping trip to be put into our yearly calendar, preferably in the first half of the year, so when a flyer for the Jondaryan Woolshed Classic Motorcycle Rally ended up in my inbox, I thought, “this could be it”. With no other suggestions being made, I decided to action the Classic Motorcycle Rally weekend and get things rolling for the weekend away. With the plan being to get an early start for the ride down there, we settled for a 7.00am departure time from Quay Street. With that, we had Chris & Sheryl P and Jill & I turn up with camper trailers ready for the weekend. Also there was Dave B and two mates who were riding with us as far as Ban Ban Springs, where they were then heading for Tamborine and an IMFR (International Fellowship of Motorcycling Rotarians) meet & greet weekend. I don’t know how that went, as the weather along the coast seemed to get wetter the further you went south. At Ban Ban Springs, Jill S was already there to join the ride, that was to take us south west through Kingaroy and Dalby, ensuring that we were getting further away from any coastal rain. At Dalby, we did a fuel top up, and then kept an eye out for a suitable place for lunch. This we found at the Bowenville Hotel, which is just off the Warrego Highway, and it looked like we had the place to ourselves, there just being the barmaid and three international (female) backpackers who were boarding / working there. This was distressing to both Chris and I, as we didn’t know where to look without being given a look of disapproval from Jill or Sheryl. On our arrival at Jondaryan Woolshed, we were directed by signage to check-in at the main reception building, where we were given our wrist bands and the location of our camping sites. The camping site allocations wasn’t going quite to plan, and as it turned out, it was for the better, as we were relocated to the second (larger) camping site, which allowed us to be camping next to each other, and still have power sites as well. This also put us within a 1 minute walk to the amenities, restaurants / food stalls and camp kitchen. After setting up the campers / tents etc, we then spent some time checking out the venue; locating where Ross & Bev T and Ron H had set themselves up (they had travelled down on the Friday); and then settled back and had drinks and nibbles as we watched the local wildlife and the sun set to the west. This we followed up with cooking dinner and going up to the woolshed for the night’s entertainment which was classic motorcycle videos being played on a big screen; a Rock-and-Roll band up on the stage; with drinking, socialising and dancing into the late hours of the evening. Sunday morning was another perfect weather day, but I received a text from Dave & Julie H, who were staying up on the Blackall Range (Melany, Montville) saying that they wouldn’t be able to come down for the day, as it was still pouring rain on the coast. They told me a couple of days later that next year they’ll stay at Jondaryan. The restaurants / food stalls all opened at around 7.00am, so breakfast could be purchased if one chose to, and I’m told that the scrambled egg & bacon rolls were to die for. Very yummy. The morning we spent checking out the motorcycle displays setup by the various vintage / classic clubs, BMW R owners, drag bike club, Z owners, to name just a few. There was also a few motorcycle trade stalls there such as Bike♡her, Bikers Art, Wilko”s Pro Shine, plus a few non-motorcycle stalls, and although not high in number, with the number of motorcyclist that attended the event (close to 1000), I’m sure that next year that will change.

9

Also open for the event, was all of the heritage buildings and machinery displays, which takes quite a while to check them all out. I spent some of the afternoon watching some more of the classic motorcycling videos, whilst others enjoyed the Rock-and-Roll band playing this time out on the outside stage. That evening we decided to purchase dinner from one of the food stalls and settle down in the woolshed for more socialising and video watching. There was quite a few being screened.

Monday morning after breakfast, it was time to pack up the tents and campers and head for home, but this time it was via Toowoomba, Crows Nest, Nanango and Ban Ban Springs, where we stopped for lunch. By mid-afternoon, we were all safely home, with everyone saying that they will definitely be returning to the Jondaryan Woolshed Classic Motorcycle Rally next year, which, judging by everyone that I spoke to there could only be bigger and better.

Rosedale 14/04/2016

After a morning of Spyder envy it was decided a ride to 1770 would remove the lingering effects of Spyder venom from some veins.

A total of ten bikes left River Cruise Cafe on an uneventful run to Rosedale. Once the story telling and toilet breaks were dispensed with it was back on the road. At this point we left two riders to head back to Bundaberg while the rest headed north into gathering cloud.

A relaxing lunch at the caravan park cafe was enjoyed before heading south once again. A stop was made at Fingerboard Roadhouse for fuel and snacks, before heading home. As is always the case a great day, a good ride and good company is why we love what we do.

I should add the Spyder Demo was informative and interesting and John from River Cruise Cafe should be thanked for putting it together.

Greg D (Boo Boo).

Maryborough Sports Club – 21/04/2016

If there one thing our Thursday riders do well, it is decision making. This time with a minute to spare we made up our mind to head to the as yet untried Maryborough Sports Club for lunch.

With strict instructions not to go to Burrum Heads as that was to be next Thursdays ride to be led by Tony O, we decided a new venue for lunch might be worth a go.

With eight riders ready, we lined up but unfortunately our nominated leader experienced an unexpected problem. With all the help we could muster we still could not get Alan going. He soon directed us to leave while he sorted out his battery issue.

With Chris’s plea not to go down Goodwood Road, we headed over the Ring Road to the Isis Highway led by Ron and tail ended by Bruce. Deviating by Foleys Road we had a short stop with some tourists at Childers before going down the highway to Maryborough.

Down Hervey Bay Road to the Maryborough Sports Club we were really surprised by the simple but comfortable amenities.

We were treated to a great value ($9.90) bistro lunch with desert. Sitting in air-conditioned comfort we were entertained well and truly by the veteran piano man who showed great endurance by continual playing with some easy listening over lunch.

We then headed down toward Hervey Bay returning to Torbanlea via the back road and onto Childers for a coffee break before heading home.

Another good outing with some good friends and good tucker

We do it quite well really.
