Yorkshire Countrywoman’s Association

Slingsby branch meeting held on Tuesday 9th July was attended by 13 members who were informed of the death of the President of the YCA, Mrs Audrey Totty MBE at the age of 90 years.

An invitation has been received to join Easingwold branch to hear an illustrated talk on Victorian jewellery to be given BBC Antiques Roadshow expert Miss Susan Rumfitt on 1st October.

Members were asked to have their Ryedale Show entry forms to the branch secretary by 18th July and articles for showing on the 29th July if unable to attend themselves. Then followed an evening of fun and laughter brought to us by "Ivy and Maureen" who regaled us with stories and jokes in dialect, a session of armchair keep fit, and finishing with everyone singing and waving flags at the proms.

Nancy Coates gave the vote of thanks and reminded us how beneficial a good laugh is for everyone.

There is now a summer recess so the next meeting will be on 10th September.

Obituaries

Doreen Douthwaite, nee Smith, was born in Terrington on the 9th August 1928 and died in Malton hospital on the 28th May 2013 aged 84 years. On August 8th this year she would have celebrated 60 years of marriage to her husband George. George and Doreen where our neighbours for over 20 years, and what great neighbours to have; the only problem being George’s immaculate productive garden, we tried to keep ours the same but not, alas, in the same league. Our sincere condolences go to their children Martin, Lynne, Gail and Debra and to all their extended family.

Peter Myers 1945 – 2013

Peter was born on 30th December 1945 at Slingsby in the end house of the terrace of small houses, attached to Sawpit Cottage, which stood on The Green where Green Crescent now cuts through to Railway Street. When he was 5 years old the family moved to Railway Street to the house now named Toby’s Cottage after his dad. He went to the village school, moving in 1958 to the newly opened Secondary School at Malton.

Sawpit Cottage and its attached terrace of cottages.

On leaving school he worked at Pearson and Ward Solicitors in Malton where he remained for over 30 years, moving in 1994 to Eden Camp at Old Malton. In his latter few years there he left behind office work and accountancy which had been his life, and worked outside on the camp, mixing with staff and visitors suiting his friendly and gregarious nature. At age 65 he reduced to 2 days a week and recently retired completely.

Peter married Stella Buckland of Southolme in 1971 and they left Slingsby to live in Wentworth Street, Malton where they remained for the whole of their married life. They have two children, Anna who lives locally at Nunnington with her two daughters and Gillian who is at Scarborough with two sons. They are a very close knit family and Peter was very proud of his grandchildren.

Peter was a sportsman. ‘Football mad’ as a schoolboy he played for the school team and later for Slingsby. After retiring from playing, well into his 30s, he took to watching, usually Slingsby but also Old Malton. He was always happy watching local football and he went whatever the weather. He also played cricket for Slingsby

and for Swinton and Broughton. Colleagues from this latter team played snooker and he joined them, playing for many years in the local league.

When his dad died in 1990 Peter inherited his bowls and not long afterwards he took up the game himself. All his spare time in summer was taken up playing at and for Slingsby and it was here that his life ended on 7th June this year. He died suddenly after playing when in the car preparing to drive home. In many ways a good way to go, but not aged 67.

He was a very easy going man who got on well with everyone he met. His popularity can be measured by the number of people who attended his funeral. He was a lifetime Chelsea supporter and it would have brought a smile to his face if he had known that his 11 year old grandson went to his funeral in a Chelsea shirt.

Dick Hindby, who died in Malton Hospital on the 10th July after a long battle with cancer, came to Slingsby in 1964 to become the landlord of The Grapes where he entertained his friends. When you came through the door you were greeted as a friend, not a customer. Dick didn’t move far when he retired in 1994, just a 150 yards down the road in Railway Street.

Dick will be sadly missed by his partner Angela, his children, Clyde, Dawn, Jayne and Richard and also by his many, many friends who filled All Saint’s Church on the 22nd of July to say farewell.

Aviation History Still Gracing the Yorkshire Skies

Thirsk Model Club

Yorkshire has had a close association with Aviation from the very earliest days of man flying. Whilst today there is probably a little less full size aviation than in days gone by, those early years are still represented in the skies of Yorkshire by members of various model aircraft clubs. Modern day model aircraft are a long way from the stick and tissue models that many of the more mature aero modellers probably started out building as boys, not that many years after WWII when British Aviation was in its heyday and many of us aspired to be daredevil pilots.

Models of full size aircraft can now be built to large scales with many models being flown at the Thirsk Model Club being to ¼ scale and with lots of detail that bears close scrutiny on the ground. However, these models are made to fly and reproduce the aerial presence and atmosphere of the full size aircraft they are modelled on. Modern electronics have made the vast investment of time and effort in such models much safer as modern radio control has become very reliable, with duplicated receiver and battery systems, very like modern day full size aircraft. The latest innovation is full telemetry capability so that real time monitoring of performance and on board systems is possible such as airspeed, battery voltages, altitude, engine rpm etc.

At Elvington, alongside the Yorkshire Air Museum, model jet aircraft are routinely flown by members of the Elvington Flyers, these models use miniature gas turbine engines burning kerosene fuel and are capable of flying at speeds in excess of 150mph. During August each year the Large Model Association hold a show at Elvington where some of the larger V Bomber aircraft of the museum are represented in very large model form, this year a 20ft wingspan model of a Vulcan bomber of the cold war era is expected to fly.

Coming back to the Thirsk Model Club the connection with Yorkshire is maintained with a 1/5 scale model of a Blackburn Type D monoplane, as built by Blackburn Aircraft Company of Leeds in 1912, can be regularly seen flying , even reproducing the original rather crude control of wing warping to initiate the turns. My latest project is a 1/6th scale Hawker Hunter with a 31lb thrust gas turbine engine and full gyro stabilisation, retractable undercarriage and working dive brake. Little did I know when I looked up, with awe, into the skies in the late 50’s, early 60’s that I to would one day would be flying such an iconic and beautiful British Jet.

Model aircraft can provide a multitude of rewards to participants with building, systems set up and flying skills to master. When it all comes together well, in a beautiful miniature rendition a full size aircraft, flown just like the real thing, the sense of satisfaction and achievement is immense. If you fancy being a ‘Neville Duke’ or ‘Amy Johnson’ of the miniature flying world why not go along to Elvington on 10th or 11th August, or contact the Thirsk Model Club by email, or to see some of the model aeroplanes flying at the Thirsk Club field or watch the You Tube Channel ‘throttletothewall’.

The boss of Ryanair walks into a bar and sees a sign: ‘Guinness £1:50 a pint’. Thinking this is cheap, he asks for a pint, and the bartender asks wryly: ‘Would you like a glass with that sir?’

During his air test, a young pilot flew through a rainbow He passed with flying colours!

If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?

Heavens Above Slingsby

Aug. 12: The Perseid Meteor Shower The annual Perseid meteor shower is considered among the best of the annual displays thanks to its high rates of up to 90-meteors-per-hour for a single observer, as well as its reliability. The shower is beloved by summer campers and often discovered by city dwellers that might be spending time in the country under dark, starry skies. This past summer (2012), the moon was a fat waning crescent and presented a minor nuisance during the meteor shower. But in 2013, the moon will be a couple of days before first quarter and will set during the evening hours, leaving the rest of the night dark for prospective observers

Nov. 3: Hybrid Eclipse of the Sun This is a rather unusual solar eclipse in that, along its track, which runs for 8,450 miles (13,600 km) across the Earth's surface, the eclipse quickly morphs from annular to total; it is therefore known to astronomers as a "hybrid eclipse." Truth be told, along most of the track, the eclipse appears as a total, with a very thin annulus (or ring) of sunlight visible near the very beginning of the track. The track of the central line of this eclipse begins in the Atlantic about 545 miles (875 km) southwest of Bermuda. So, along North America's Atlantic Coast, interested viewers (using proper viewing devices, such as pinhole projection or #14 welders glass) will only see the dark disk of the moon exiting the sun's face at sunrise. The eclipse track will pass south of the Cape Verde Islands, and then curve southeastward parallel to the African coastline. The greatest eclipse, with 100 seconds of totality and the path width reaching a maximum of just 36 miles (58 km), occurs approximately 250 miles (402 km) off the coast of Liberia. The shadow track will then sweep across central Africa, passing over sections of Gabon, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and Kenya, before ending at sunset at the Ethiopia-Somalia border. Any chance even for a brief glimpse in Slingsby? No.

Comet ISON How is it getting along? Well its average speed has increased from 42000 mph average in May to 56000 in July and as it gets closer to the Sun it will accelerate to a whopping 425,000 mph! Eccentricity Any object orbiting the Sun in a closed loop has to have an eccentricity between 0 and 1. If that orbit is in a circular fashion like our own planet’s, its eccentricity will be close to 0. Earth’s eccentricity is around 0.017 which means its orbit is very circular (although not perfect)! However, an object with an eccentricity close to 1 could take tens of thousands of years to complete an orbit as the orbit will be very elliptical. Comet ISON’s eccentricity is 1.000003457 – just ‘over’ 1! If you’ve not already worked this out for yourself, this suggests that its presence in our Solar System is an event that has never happened before and will never happen again. Instead of it having a highly elliptical orbit around our Sun, it seems ISON is just passing through.

By the time the next issue of the Triangle ends up coming through your letter box, the Slingsby website will have been online for two and a half years. How time has flown. There has been plenty of posts and pages added to the website over the past couple of years and it's now time that the website had a little bit of a makeover.

The current design is starting to show its age and a new theme, as the designs are called, will not only introduce new features and improvements to the site, but will also help keep the website secure. The hard task of finding a new website 'look' has been in progress for a few weeks now, and with so many designs to choose from, the webmaster has been finding it a slight challenge. Not only do I have to find something I like, but the newsletter and website team (a particularly fussy bunch of individuals at the best of times) need to like it too.

The search continues...

After May's very impressive viewing figures for the website, June was a steady month for visitors with a very respectable total of 4200 page views, slightly boosted by the Grapes Inn page receiving a lot of traffic after they featured as The Yorkshire Post's 'Pub of the Week'. Hopefully July's traffic will continue that trend.

The Slingsby Facebook page continues to do a great job of distributing the website news with 53 people currently following the page. Likewise the village Twitter page continues to grow with a current total of 576 following the feed.

In the end, it's all about getting the news out to people, wherever they are, so they can to keep up to date with what's going on in Slingsby, Fryton and South Holme. As one recent follower so rightly tweeted “I love that Slingsby has its own Twitter that's so cool!” How true!

Slingsby Methodist Church.

On Sunday 16th June we held our 176th anniversary of the building of the Chapel. We began the celebrations by having a walk round part of Stephen Prest's farm looking at some of the conservation features which have been developed over the years and demonstrating how we are trying to be responsible stewards in God's world. We saw the creation of traditional meadows. New hedgerows have been planted and 5 small plantations of mainly traditional species of trees have been planted.

There are 4.5 miles of 6 metre grass margins round the arable fields to encourage small mammals, insects and ground nesting birds. Several acres of wild bird seed mixes are sown every year which helps to feed many small birds and mammals over the winter months. Thirty people went on the walk in very pleasant weather and we then went back to the Chapel schoolroom for a very nice tea followed by a short service of thanks and celebration led by Louise Hayes. It was a very successful and enjoyable day.

THE LABYRINTH on Sunday the 21st July we had the latest of our 3rd Sunday Special Services which was led by Rev Mike Smith. It was all about journeys and was based on the principle of the Labyrinth. A Labyrinth reshapes a 12th century ritual for the 21st century.

Its maze-like path takes you on a symbolic journey, creates space to unwind and think in particular about our relationships with ourselves, one another, our world and with God. The service began in the Methodist Church but then we walked to Stephen & Rachel Prest's in Railway Street where Mike had set out a labyrinth in the garden which we were able to walk round and meditate in. Afterwards we all enjoyed an excellent barbecue as well as playing games and chatting together on a lovely sunny afternoon.

HARVEST FESTIVAL. Our Harvest Festival is a week earlier this year on Sunday 22nd September at 10-30 am. and will be led by Rev Norma Davey from Kirkbymoorside. After the service we will have a Harvest Lunch in the schoolroom to which all are welcome. More details later.

What does the PCC do?

The PCC, or ‘Parochial Church Council’ is a small group of about 12 people with one main official function – to work with the Rector or Vicar to ‘promote the mission of the Church in its parish’ (under the terms of the Parochial Church Councils Measure, passed in 1956). In reality this means that we are responsible for the care and maintenance of the church building and its contents, and for raising sufficient funds to keep the church open, heated and lit, and helping to plan worship and other outreach activities. The PCC consists of a Chair, who is usually the Rector, the Churchwarden(s), and a Treasurer and a Secretary and other ‘lay’ (non-clergy) members, including our Methodist friends, who are elected from the ‘electoral roll’ annually. The PCC meets around four times a year in the Methodist schoolroom or village hall. Since I became Secretary, the agenda of the Slingsby PCC has been dominated by the ‘Tower Appeal’ Together we submitted over 130 grant applications and organised numerous fundraising events (the Chocolate evening was a particular favourite of mine!) Whilst this was exhausting, it was a great opportunity to get out of church and into the village hall, the sports field and the pub, and we are so grateful for the fantastic support and help we received from so many Slingsby residents in meeting our target earlier this year. Hopefully the Tower is now secure, and we can turn our attention to providing better facilities for those using and visiting the church, such as toilets and a kitchen!

At the moment, the Slingsby PCC is also heavily involved in finding a new Rector for the ‘Street parishes’ within the Benefice (which includes Appleton and Amotherby, Barton-le-Street and Coneysthorpe and Hovingham and Scackleton). The recent creation of a new ‘Joint PCC’ for the whole Benefice will hopefully enable us to support a new incumbent more effectively, whilst retaining separate control over parochial church fabric and finances.

There is no doubt that the rural church faces a huge series of challenges in the future, but the PCC has been really heartened by the affection for, and interest in, the church we have witnessed over the past couple of years. We have just founded the ‘Friends of Slingsby church’ to try and put the building on a more secure and sustainable foundation in the future, and hope that our friends will join us for a series of upcoming events such as the ‘big church clean’, car boot sale, Apple Day and Local History lectures.

If you would like more information about becoming a ‘Friend of Slingsby church’, joining the electoral roll or simply getting more involved in the life of the church in Slingsby, please do get in touch with us!

Open Gardens, Slingsby, July 14th 2013.

A lot of hard team work, beginning in May with digging, planting, clipping and then ending with baking at 4.0 am on July 14th., went into the preparations for the Open Gardens this year in Slingsby.

Photo Brian Clarke The day was organised by the Village Hall committee to raise funds to replace the windows in the village hall. What a successful day we had – the sun shone all day, people wandered around the village admiring the 12 gardens on display, and enjoyed a delicious light lunch or cream tea (or both) in the village hall. ‘What an essentially English way to spend a lovely Sunday summer’s afternoon – beautiful gardens and then tea and cake’ I heard one young visitor comment.

Financially the day was a success as we made £1012.40, and the committee wishes to thank all the participants who opened their gardens, all the helpers who provided the food and most of all, all the visitors who enjoyed our delightful village.

Giving Nature a Home

The RSPB needs your help to give nature a home.

Earlier this year a group of 25 conservation and research organisations published The State of Nature report, which painted a picture of how well our wildlife was doing. Sadly, the news was not good with six out of 10 plants and animals in the UK having declined over the past five decades. These include hedgehogs, garden butterflies, bees, sparrows and starlings.

But while the UK’s wildlife is not in the best of shape, the good news is we can all do our bit to help it thrive once again. As part of its Giving Nature a Home campaign, The RSPB has come up with a list of loads of different things you can do in your garden to help wildlife.

If you are feeling lazy, then why not give your mower a rest and leave an area of your lawn to grow wild. This will provide homes for lots of bugs and mini-beasts, which in turn are great food for birds. Making logs piles and growing flowering plants are also easy ways to attract insects like bees, while the more adventurous of you

Editor Keith

Contemplating his retirement in April 2015. The plan, so far, is for David to coordinate with his new co-editor on the production of The Triangle and for Keith to continue selling advertising space, invoicing and gathering in the loot and to produce the Yellow Pages.

What skills do you need? As you can see The Triangle is produced with the basic ‘word’ programme. No fancy ’Publisher’ for us. So nothing special needed there. You will be very well supported by your delivery team, who also collect the annual subs on their patch. Keith will continue with his deliveries, if required, covering The Lawns, Church Lane, High Street and Malton Road. David is a demon photo shopper. Give Keith or David a ring to pop round for a chat. It’s fun and if you are like me , a frustrated artist, laying it out is very satisfying.

Famous Last Words

“Don’t let it end like this. Tell them I said something.”

Pancho Villa

Mexican revolutionary ‘Pancho’ Villa was ‘hated by thousands and loved by millions.’ Born Doroteo Arango, he adopted the name of a dead gang leader after killing his sister’s rapist. General ’Black Jack’ Perishing, one of many men who pursued him in vain, once told U. S. President Woodrow Wilson, “Villa is everywhere and nowhere.” Perishing was wrong. When he was finally shot to death by his enemies, he was in Chihuahua.
