AboutIrelandThe Republic of Ireland (or Poblacht na hEireann, in Irish), has a population of more
than 4.4 million with Dublin having more than 1.1 Million. It has with a land area of
around 70,273 km and it’s one of the least densely populated countries in Europe.
The Country has a relatively mild climate with average temperatures ranging on
average from 7 °C (45 °F), in January to 22 °C (72 °F) in July. The official languages
are English and Irish, although English is predominant.
Ireland has made a significant contribution to world literature. Modern Irish fiction
began with the publishing of the 1726 novel ‘Gulliver’s Travels’. Other writers of
importance are Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker (author of the 1897 novel ‘Dracula’) and
James Joyce, who published his most famous work ‘Ulysses’ in 1922.
Irish traditional music has remained vibrant and retains many traditional aspects. It
has influenced various music genres, such as American country and roots music, and
to some extent modern rock. Ireland has also produced many internationally known
artists: The Corrs, The Cranberries, U2 and Damien Rice.
Irish cuisine was traditionally based on meat supplemented with vegetables and
seafood. The potato eventually formed the basis of many traditional Irish dishes.
Ireland is famous for the full Irish breakfast, which involves a fried meal consisting of
bacon, egg, sausage, pudding, and fried tomato.
Gaelic football and hurling are the traditional sports of Ireland as well as most
popular spectator sports. Soccer is the third most popular spectator sport and has
the highest level of participation.
Irish people are well known worldwide for their warmth and their hospitality which
welcomes everyone.
AboutDublinDublin is the capital city of Ireland and also the largest. The English name is
derived from the Irish name Dubh Linn, meaning “black pool”. It is a primate city
with an urban population of over 1 million, containing almost 25% of the country’s
population. Dublin is situated near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast, at the
mouth of the River Liffey, and at the centre of the Dublin Region.
Originally founded as a Viking settlement, it evolved into the Kingdom of Dublin
and became the island’s primary city following the Norman invasion. The city
expanded rapidly from the 17th century and for a brief period was the second
largest city within the British Empire and the fifth largest in Europe. After the Act
of Union in 1800, Dublin entered a period of stagnation, but remained the eco-
nomic centre for most of the island. Following the partition of Ireland in 1922, the
new parliament, the Oireachtas, was located in Leinster House. Dublin became
the capital of the Irish Free State and later of the Republic of Ireland.
Similar to the other cities of Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Waterford, Dublin is
administered separately from its respective county and has its own city council.
The city is currently ranked 29th in the Global Financial Centres Index and is listed
by the GaWC as a global city, with a ranking of Alpha, placing Dublin among
the top 30 cities in the world. It is a historical and contemporary cultural centre
for the country, as well as a modern centre of education, the arts, administration,
economy and industry.
EDUCATIONDublin is the primary centre of education in Ireland, with three universities and
many other higher education institutions. There are 20 third-level institutes in the
city. Dublin was European Capital of Science in 2012.
