CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: Friends in Christ:Let us confess our sins to God our Father and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.

We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do.

C: God of peace, you brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the great Shepherd of the sheep.

Equip us through his blood, which sealed the eternal covenant, with every good thing we need to do your will, and work in us what is pleasing to you.

Peter and John before the council

R: The first Reading for the fourth Sunday of Easter is written in Chapter 4 of Acts, beginning at Verse five.

elders, and the teachers of the Law of Moses met in Jerusalem. 6The high priest Annas was there, as well as Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other members of the high priest's family.

Acts 4:5-12 7They brought in Peter and John and

made them stand in the middle while they questioned them. They asked, "By what power and in whose name have you done this?”

told the nation's leaders and the elders:

9You are questioning us today about a kind deed in which a crippled man was healed. 10But there is something we must tell you and everyone else in Israel.

well because of the power of Jesus Christ from Nazareth. You put Jesus to death on a cross, but God raised him to life. 11He is the stone that you builders thought was worthless, and now he is the most important stone of all.

R: The Second Reading is written in Chapter 3 of First John, beginning at Verse 16.

1 John 3:16-24 16We know what love is because Jesus

gave his life for us. That's why we must give our lives for each other. 17If we have all we need and see one of our own people in need, we must have pity on that person, or else we cannot say we love God. 18Children, you show love for others by truly helping them, and not merely by talking about it.

1 John 3:16-24 19When we love others, we know that we

belong to the truth, and we feel at ease in the presence of God. 20But even if we don't feel at ease, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.

1 John 3:16-24 21Dear friends, if we feel at ease in the

presence of God, we will have the courage to come near him. 22He will give us whatever we ask, because we obey him and do what pleases him. 23God wants us to have faith in his Son Jesus Christ and to love each other. This is also what Jesus taught us to do.

scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

Offering prayer

C: Eternal loving Shepherd, your Son laid down his life for us,

his sheep. Help us to follow him by loving and serving the people around us. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCHM: Please keep us alert, loving God, to

the extensive needs of those around us, and guide us in how to best employ our time and gifts to express your love for them.

God our holy Friend, please save your people.

Good Shepherd, C: guide and inspire us.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCHM: While we eat well, some scavenge

for scraps; while we drink purified water on tap, some plod a long way to obtain muddy water to carry back to their families.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCHM: While we go to bed in comfortable

surroundings and sleep peacefully, some sleep under bridges, shelter in shop doorways or cemeteries, and have old newspapers for their blankets.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCHM: While we have a faith to sustain us;

much love to nurture us, and a hope to draw us forward in confidence, there are many without faith, love or hope, and some who are planning suicide.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCHM: While we have a land that, no matter

where we travel, we can always call our home, there are a multitude of refugees made homeless by racism, war, or natural disaster.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCHM: While we have physicians to treat

even our minor ailments, and well equipped hospitals for more serious ailments, there are millions without even the most basic medical services .

PRAYER OF THE CHURCHM: God of justice and compassion, we

do not understand all the reasons why some must suffer while others live a comfortable existence, but we do know that you are on the side of health and happiness.
