Welcome to Trinity

Greetings and Prayer

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name! Bring an offering, and come into the courts of the Lord!Worship the Lord in holy splendor;tremble before the Lord, all the earth!

Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!The Lord has established the world, it shall never be moved. The Lord will judge the peoples with equity.” Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it!Then shall all the trees of the wood sing for joy before the Lord, who comes to judge the earth. The Lord will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with his truth.

1. My county, ’tis of thee,sweet land of liberty,

of thee I sing;

1. My county, ’tis of thee,sweet land of liberty,

of thee I sing;

WORDS: Samuel F. Smith, 1832

land where my fathers died,

land of the pilgrim’s pride,from every mountainside

let freedom ring!

2. My native country, thee,land of the noble free,

thy name I love;

2. My native country, thee,land of the noble free,

thy name I love;

I love thy rocks and rills,thy woods and templed

hills;my heart withrapture thrills,

like that above.

3. Let music swell the breeze,

and ring from all the treessweet freedom’s song;

3. Let music swell the breeze,

and ring from all the treessweet freedom’s song;

let mortal tongues awake;let all that breathe

partake;let rocks their silence

break,the sound prolong.

4. Our fathers’ God, to thee,author of liberty,to thee we sing;

4. Our fathers’ God, to thee,author of liberty,to thee we sing;

long may our land be bright

with freedom’s holy light;protect us by thy might,

great God, our King.

Gracious God, even on this day of worship, we remember sins that are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive our world for that which we prefer not even to see.Forgive our nation for that which we prefer not even to discuss.Forgive our church for that which we have failed to do as the body of Christ.

Forgive each of us for any harm we have done and for any good that we have failed to do.Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open us to a future in which we can be changed; and grant us your grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

First Gospel ReadingMark 1: 1 - 8

The beginning of the good news[a] of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,“See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,  who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’”John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with[f] water; but he will baptize you with[g] the Holy Spirit.”

Second Gospel ReadingMark 6: 14-29

King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some were[b]saying, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him.” But others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.”For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod[c] had married her.  For John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

And Herodias had a grudge against John, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When Herod heard John, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him.But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. When his daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.”

And he solemnly swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.”  She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the baptizer.”Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her.Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s[f] head. He went and beheaded him in the prison,

brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother.  When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.

THANKSGIVING AND COMMUNIONTHANKSGIVING AND COMMUNION

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVINGTHE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Let us give thanksto the Lord our God.

It is right to give ourthanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comesin the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ.

By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.

On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples and said:

“Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said:

“Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

And so,in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us,

as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

Christ has died;Christ is risen;Christ will come again.

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine.

Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.

By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world,

until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet.

Through your Son Jesus Christ,with the Holy Spiritin your holy church,all honor and glory is yours,almighty Father,now and forever.Amen.
