Welcome to Ukraine!
Ukraine is known for being the ‘bread basket of Europe’. Thanks to the country’s size and its widespread fertile black soils, Ukraine has very favourable production conditions, especially for arable crops, such as wheat, barley, rye, buckwheat, oats, sunflower, flax, and soy. Ukraine has much more than this: thousands of square kilometres covered with natural woodlands provide excellent growing conditions for a wide range of medicinal and aromatic plants, mushrooms, and wild berries. According to data from the Organic Federation of Ukraine, around 400’000 hectares of agricultural land is organically certified, relating to 175 organic farm operations.
Given these abundant natural resources, it is not surprising that Ukraine is attracting interest and growing in importance as a supplier of organic produce; for both export and domestic markets, which have shown steady growth in recent years. Thanks to its competitive production structures and its proximity to Central and Western Europe, it is expected that there will be a strong further growth in organic exports from Ukraine in the coming years, especially of cereals, sunflower seeds, soy, and wild collection products. The current political and economic crises in Ukraine don’t hamper this development trend. Rather, the devaluation of the Ukrainian currency has had a positive impact on organic conversion and profitability, as organic supply from Ukraine has consequently become more competitive in the international market.
Ukraine’s second presence with its own country pavilion at the Biofach 2015 is an important step toward visualizing the organic potential of this large country. Nevertheless, the eight exhibiting companies reflect only a small range of the organic produce that Ukraine is offering. Thus, the Ukraine country pavilion representatives will be pleased to inform and discuss with you about other possibilities to collaborate with organic producers from Ukraine. Furthermore, the Organic Business Directory of Ukraine, which was issued in 2014, will provide you with useful sector contacts.

Ukraine’s Organic Sector at a Glance
ExportMost Ukrainian organic companies are export oriented. The main buying countries are within Europe, including: Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Poland, UK, Austria, Italy, and Hungary. Smaller volumes are also exported to the US, Canada and to Asian countries. Overall, organic exporters from Ukraine benefit strongly from improved market access due to the reduction of the trade barrier for Ukrainian exporters through the recent Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine. The main organic exports from Ukraine are mainly agricultural commodities (i.e. cereals, oil crops, pulses) and wild collection products (i.e. berries, mushrooms, nuts, herbs). Organic exports from Ukraine grow every year. In 2014, the biggest organic export volumes were achieved with wheat, spelt, millet, rye, maize, flax, sunflower, soy, lupine, pumpkin seeds, mustard, blueberry, walnuts and birch sap.
Certification bodies involved in the certification of export-oriented products in Ukraine are Organic Standard, ETKO, ABCert, SGS, ICEA, Suolo e Salute, Austria Bio Garantie, Ecocert, Ceres, and Control Union.
Domestic marketThe domestic market for organic products is rather young in Ukraine. Organic specialty shops started to operate in the big cities from 2008 onwards and bigger
retail chains have also started to sell organic products through their outlets in recent years. Although organic products have gained more shelf space in general, the range of organic products available on the shelves for consumers is far from the full assortment. The most advanced product ranges relate to grocery and dairy product categories. Consumers can currently access the following organically certified products produced within Ukraine: different vegetables and salads, pumpkins, different seasonal fruits and berries, grapes, meat, milk, eggs, mushrooms, herbs, nuts, honey, groats, flour, flakes, pasta, jams, syrups, juices, oils, tea, spices, bakery, dairy and meat products. Imported organic products to Ukraine include baby food, tea, coffee, sugar, spices, fruits, vegetables,
organic products, and BIOLan Ukraine Association of Organic Production Stakeholders. International charitable organisation “Information centre “Green Dossier” has gained relevance in sharing “organic information”. VIP Group and QueS consultancy body are significant actors with regard to market and export promotion. At the regional level, Ecoterra Lviv city NGO is an important actor to promote organic in the Carpathians. Organic Standard, the only Ukrainian certification body, is a key actor in the sector. The number of individual organic producers, processors, traders, and retailers is increasing continuously and they play an important role in business and market development.

At this stage, there is still a low level of consumer awareness of organic products within Ukraine. Experts expect a strong growth of the organic market in Ukraine once the political and economic situation improves.
Organic standards and certificationThe most popular standard among organic operators in Ukraine is the EU organic standard, i.e. Council Regulation (EC) 834/2007 and Commission Regulation (EC) 889/2008, which is used for both export and for the domestic market. Depending on the target market, also other standards are applied, including NOP (US), Bio Suisse (Switzerland), Bioland (Germany), Soil Association (UK), KRAV (Sweden), Naturland (Germany).
Altogether, there are 19 private internationally accredited certification bodies included in the official list of approved certification bodies for Ukraine by the European Union Commission (EU Regulation 1235/2008, Annex IV). The only Ukrainian certification body is Organic Standard: all others are foreign. One more certification body, is active in the south-west regions of Ukraine, but not being listed there.
Organic stakeholdersThe Ukrainian organic movement is represented by a number of stakeholders. The most important organic associations include the Organic Federation of Ukraine, Organic Ukraine Union of producers of certified

Company profileGaleks-Agro was founded in 2008, after its owner visited Biofach and was convinced to build up an organic business in Ukraine. From the beginning, the company’s purpose has been to produce and trade high quality organic agricultural produce for export. Galeks-Agro’s core business relates to cereals and leguminous crops although the company established its own organic dairy processing unit (Organic Milk Ltd) in 2014. The integration of animal husbandry aims to further improve soil fertility and sustainable production practices.
The company is certified according to the Standard Equivalent to Council Regulation (EC) 834/2007 and the Commission Regulation (EC) 889/2008 by Organic Standard certification body, and is approved by Bio Suisse. Galeks-Agro’s production unit covers almost 6’000 hectares of organic arable lands in the Novograd-Volynskyi district of the Zhytomyr region in north-western Ukraine. The company currently exports its organic cereals mainly to Switzerland, Germany and Hungary.
