Structured into four Parts, the Part One of the Catechism of the Catholic Church deals with the profession of faith. It is further divided into articles and chapters. Interesting topics are: the mystery of God, the Revelation of God, the transmission of Divine Revelation, the Sacred Scripture, and man’s response to God which is sectioned, “I believe” and “we believe” and the title, “the Credo”. In different articles, the Credo is detailed. There are articles devoted to the mystery of Incarnation, and saving Act of Jesus- birth, ministry, suffering, death, Resurrection, Ascension, and His second coming. This is followed by the treaty on the Holy Spirit, the mystery of the Church. There are Chapters devoted to the Communion of Saints, and Mary, Mother of Christ the Mother of the Church. This part draws special attention with the treaty on the forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the Body and the life everlasting. Of interest for the curious minds of today are: the chapters on Particular Judgement, Heaven, Purgatory ( final purification), Hell, the Last Judgement. This part concludes with the Hope of the New Heaven and the New Earth. The topics mentioned above are not new to us. Many a time we take them for granted as if we are already very familiar with and there is nothing new to find. We can have two approaches: we can read from the beginning to the end in a sequential manner; or we can choose topics of special interest the meditatively read for a thorough understanding. To our surprise, there may be two effects in either way of reading the book. The first effect is that topics we thought we already knew well, will disillusion us to the awareness that there are more nuances to the issues beyond what we already were convinced of. The second effect is that the reading gives us a better clarity and a transparent certainty about what we believe and what we have already incorporated into the rationale of our devotional and spiritual life. In short, if we read the Part One of the Catechism, we will feel very comfortable to be a Catholic in this age. We will see that what we believe in came from the teachings of the Lord. We will see how the Holy Spirit inspired and guided the church leaders to define those tenets of our faith and preserved it from contamination due to the concerted efforts of mundane forces down the ages. After evening family prayer, or on special occasions, it is edifying for families to read certain portions of the catechism as a family together and discuss their influence on our thoughts and actions as Catholic today. God bless you all..

From the Pastor’s Desk / Del Escritorio del Padre

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, © Copyright © J. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Apart from the period from Thanksgiving through Christmas, the summer is a favored time for family reunions. We trace family trees and recall our origins. Worship has a family tree as well, and the way we celebrate today has been influenced by various styles and customs through the centuries. We are Western Christians of the Latin Rite. By far, we are the most numerous Western Christians, but there are other ritual families as well. The Archdiocese of Milan in Italy follows the Ambrosian Rite, Toledo in Spain preserves the Mozarabic Rite and the Arab language, and Lyons in France is home to the Gallican Rite. Other liturgical families, such as the Celtic in Ireland and the Sarum in England, faded away after the Reformation. Until recent times, members of some ancient religious orders such as Carmelites and Trappists followed a pattern of Mass that varied slightly from the plan observed in Latin Rite parishes.

Isn’t the Catholic Church the same everywhere? Not at all. It never has been! The existence of so many liturgical families in the West reminds us that unity, not uniformity, is what the Church seeks to achieve among her children. We are united in faith, but wonderfully diverse in rituals, ceremonies, languages, customs, and spirituality. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

USING OUR TIME WISELY

A jar of honey lasts practically forever. The oldest jar of honey ever discovered was over five thousand years old. Honey is quite different from market-fresh produce, then; because most fruits and vegetables last only a few days, we treat them carefully. At this time of summer, we rush to find recipes for cherries and cucumbers so we won’t waste a single one. We wouldn’t feel that same urgency about honey.

In our own way, we are as delightful and fragile as ripe produce. Today’s readings urge us not to spoil, but to make good use of our limited time on earth. Ecclesiastes reminds us that because God provides for us now and always, we can manage our daily affairs without anxiety. Saint Paul encourages the Colossians to keep thoughts of heaven in everything they do, and Jesus himself asks us to treasure not earthly wealth, but God alone. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

USANDO NUESTRO TIEMPO SABIAMENTE

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
