Pastor’s Notebook

January 29, 2012

Dear St. Michael Parishioners:

Our annual observance of Catholic Schools Week begins today. Many students look forward to this week

each year because it includes enjoyable events and special treats. It is also a time for us to celebrate the en-

during value of Catholic education and focus on the gift that it provides to America’s young people. During

Catholic Schools Week we reach out to the community to build awareness of what our school has to offer.

We thank all those who work hard every day to make our school excellent – students, parents, faculty, staff,

volunteers, community supporters, and local and national leaders.

One of the most important roles of families is to prepare our children to lead

fulfilling lives of love and service to their families, their communities, and the

Lord. That is why the 2010 Catholic School’s Week theme is particularly fitting.

“Catholic Schools Faith. Academics. Service” which celebrates the fact that

Catholic Schools are an added value to our nation. Because of our traditionally

high academic standards supported by strong moral values, Catholic schools

and their graduates make a significant contribution to American society.

Check the attached schedule of events to see what we’ve planned for the

week. Please encourage family and friends to consider a Catholic education

for their children. I think they will be impressed by the attitude, behavior, and

accomplishments of the students they observe.

On behalf of the parents, students, faculty and staff of St. Michael School, I

would like to thank you for your prayers and support of our parish school.

Through your dedication and commitment you make our school an excellent

example of how Catholic schools provide dividends for life.

Yours in Christ,

Jack Nelson

Principal

A note from the Pastor...

My dear Sisters and Brothers,

As I leave for my sabbatical, I want you to know that you will be in my prayers daily. I begin my time with a

silent retreat in Mesa, Idaho. I will be praying for you as I journey. Know that I will miss you and look for-

ward to when I will be with you again. May God bless you and keep you.

In Christ, I love you,

Fr. Jim

REFLECTION MOMENT In today’s Gospel we hear proclaimed the begin-

ning of Jesus’ public ministry. He teaches. He heals. All are amazed. By their baptism, Christian stewards realize they are called to do the same in

their lives. They are called to be the light of Christ each day. As we bring closure to the begin-ning of this new year, now is a good time to ask the Lord to fill our hearts with courage and faith, so that we too may publicly minister in his name;

that we may be liberated from our insecurities and fear so that we can share the Gospel authori-tatively and work to heal at least one wounded

relationship in the coming months ahead.

Alpha continues...

There is still a place for you to ask your questions,

or bring your friends who have questions.

Alpha continues to gather every Wednesday

evening, 6:15, in the Parish Center Multipurpose room.

Everyone comes for different reasons, from different

backgrounds, but with similar questions. At Alpha we share a

meal, watch a video and have a lively discussion.

If you are interested in coming, please contact Kathleen at

the Parish Office, (360) 292 7115.

WINTER STORM UPDATE

The parish experienced extensive landscape damage at our Downtown, Westside, and Cemetery campuses during the

recent snow/ice storm. Many of our deciduous trees were damaged beyond repair. The good news is that our buildings

had only minor damage.

Because of the severity of the snow storms, we were not able to have our parking lots cleared and we want to thank

everyone for their patience and understanding. Those companies that do snowplowing were overwhelmed by re-

quests for services and unable to plow our sites, even though we started calling three days before the weekend. As of

this past Wednesday, the Westside Chapel parking lot was still inaccessible and we were able to contract to get it

cleared. For those of you that lost power in your homes or business you know first hand how frustrating it is to be sub-

ject to conditions beyond your control. It is also important to remember this storm was the worst we have experienced

in the past 40 years.

Catholic Schools Week 2012 “Catholic Schools Faith. Academics. Service”

Sunday, January 29, 2012 – Friday, February 3, 2012

We begin our annual observance, a national celebration of Catholic school education. Daily, for six days, we will gather

in unity to share knowledge, enjoy each other’s company, and honor those who help our school to provide the aca-

demic excellence and spiritual values that make it special.

By focusing on the basics and expecting excellence, a Catholic education prepares your child for the future – in fact, a

higher percentage of Catholic education students go on to college. But Catholic education sheds light on more than

just science or math. It helps instill the self-esteem, respect, for others, and real spirituality that tomorrow’s adults will

need to create a brighter future.

Change the world -

One person at a Time

It is so easy to fall into the trap of being overwhelmed. How often in our lives do we fall into this trap? Whether it’s because of issues with our spouse, our siblings or our boss, life can sometimes be overwhelming.

I sometimes feel that way when I look at issues our society faces over and over again.

Take for instance, the issue of abortion and same-sex marriage. I am befuddled by the completely twisted morality and rationali-zation of many people in our country. Murder is murder and just because two consenting adults want something doesn’t make it morally acceptable.

I am pleased to say that thousands of people gathered this past Tuesday to take a stand. Good will only prevail over evil when good people refuse to stay silent. On this past Tuesday, our voices were heard and they will continue to be heard until the murder of our unborn is no longer tolerated in this amazing coun-try! If you fail to stand for something, you will fall for anything. Stand with us and the Teachings of the Church!
