Wollondilly is a popular destination for visitors, yet the name is often unfamiliar until memories stir with the mention of more prominent features such as Razorback Range and Burragorang Valley or towns like Picton, Appin and Warragamba.

Wollondilly is surrounded by spectacular, natural beauty and rural pastures. Its 2,560 square kilometres stretch from Yanderra in the south, Appin and Menangle in the east, Warragamba in the north with the Nattai wilderness, Yerranderie and Burragorang Valley to the west.

We know that some of you prefer jumping out of a plane at 10,000 feet rather than kicking back with a good book and a roaring fire. So we’ve done the hard work for you.

The question is… What type of explorer are you?

Heritage is a strong drawcard with visitors beginning their visit to the area at the Old Picton Post Office Visitor Information Centre to collect maps, information and local advice. The town boasts a modern shopping centre and a vibrant collection of main street businesses including a variety of gift shops, cafés, restaurants, pubs and clubs. The Picton Walking Tour offers a chance to view a large number of heritage buildings, bridges and tunnels.

Thirlmere is today home to Australia’s largest Rail Heritage collection: Trainworks. Thirlmere Lakes National Park is a popular destination for bushwalkers and nature enthusiasts. Lakesland and Mowbray Park boast many stone fruit orchards and vegetable farms and is home to Mowbray Park Farmstay offering horse riding and accommodation on a real working farm.

In Tahmoor, don’t miss Mermaid Pools in Bargo Gorge and a convenient one stop shopping centre which offers everything visitors to the area will need.

Bargo is the gateway to both the Nepean and Avon Dams, which offer breathtaking scenery and picnic facilities.

Warragamba is a quiet retreat nestled by the side of Sydney’s iconic Warragamba Dam. There is a Visitor Centre, picnic grounds and viewing platforms. The village itself is a fascinating heritage legacy of the grand post-war construction era during which the dam was built. Surrounding areas offer visitors glorious scenic drives in real farmland surrounds with an abundance of deer farms, nurseries, equestrian studs and vegetable growers prospering in this agricultural belt on the outskirts of the city.

The Oaks offers a great cluster of shops and is the perfect place to stretch out amongst the blissful surrounds over a cup of your favourite coffee.

Oakdale is a strong stone fruit growing area and Nattai is the gateway to the Burragorang Valley lookout over the Blue Mountains wilderness.

The Burragorang Valley makes up a large portion of the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains National Park. Access to the valley is restricted due to the provision of water supply for Sydney. Yerranderie is a must see destination for nature lovers and can be accessed by either Wombeyan Caves or Oberon Stock Route Road which is off the Goulburn / Oberon Highway.

The village of Menangle has deep links to the country’s agricultural heritage, being the home of the Macarthur Family’s ‘Camden Park Estate’ - a ground breaking Pastoral Company – a first for Australia’s agricultural beginnings.

The Menangle village has a 6km radius, with 37 listings on the State Heritage Inventory, along with 10 historic houses – an historical asset that befits the area’s humble beginnings when it was known as ‘The Cowpastures’, discovered by cows that had escaped confines in Sydney after travelling with the First Fleet in 1788. Menangle is an ideal place to plan an adventure of discovery.

Camden South, Cawdor, Mt Hunter and Glenmore are mainly rural and residential locales, but if you know where to look they too can offer a few unique surprises.

Settled in 1811, Appin was one of theearliest villages in the colony. The rugged beauty of Wollondilly is a feature of the drive between Appin and Douglas Park, through Broughton Pass and crossing the Cataract River at Broughton Pass and the Nepean River at Menangle Weir. Douglas Park is a true country village boasting St Mary’s Towers Monastery, one of the oldest oldest complexes of heritage buildings in the Shire.

Wollondilly is full of passionate locals, who have all fallen in love with the lifestyle of our region.

We’ve curated some stories that give insight to their lives and their passion.

It was a business assignment in 1986 that brought Blair Briggs to Sydney. In his native New Zealand, Blair designed energy and water efficient irrigation systems for agriculture. Seeing room for improvement in Australian practices, he crossed the Tasman to share his team’s advancements with the world.

A decade later, his roots now firmly planted in Australia, Blair established an organic Nashi orchard in Cowra. While his farming experience had been limited, Blair learned what it really took to design efficient, living systems and to see them thrive.

With his engineering background, he was a thinker and a problem solver. This quest for improvement was not without its hurdles. Since the surge of European farming methods in the 1800s, Australian agricultural practices have expanded and evolved. In earlier times, resources were scarce and unreliable. The scale of farming we see today was unimaginable. Critics say that current models come at the cost of efficiency and sustainability.

But it need not be that way. For Blair, modern agriculture is about connecting with our past and drawing from what we know. The challenge of developing more innovative practices is one he and his team at Mowbray Park are ready to face.

“Farming is part of the solution,” says Blair. When he joined Mowbray Park in 2007, he was ready to focus on the opportunities in modern farming.Today, the farm is on the cutting edge of agriculture, with a focus on sustainability. The farm is equipped with the latest in spray

irrigation technology. Aquaponics systems circulate nutrients and fresh water between fish and plants. Strategically-designed ‘cluster plantings’ reduce the energy needs of horses during the cold.

Across the globe, people are responding to Mowbray Park’s vision. Blair routinely travels to Asia to inform and educate about his work on the farm. Mowbray Park serves international tourists and regularly hosts student groups and families who want to reconnect with rural Australia.

Blair also hopes to teach children where their food comes from, treating visitors to a full paddock to plate experience. From the sheep shearing sheds to the century old silos, Mowbray Park delivers a complete snapshot of agricultural life.

“Our task is to find the missing links to our agricultural past,” says Blair. To any visitor, Mowbray Park’s mission is clear. Blair and his team have become leaders in their field. They have demonstrated that alternative agricultural options can still be viable.

And while the farm exudes a complex history, the future for Mowbray Park is every bit as exciting.

How does a modern farm balance sustainability, self-sufficiency and tradition?

That is the mission for Blair Briggs of Mowbray Park.

It’s all about fun at the award winning Mowbray Park Farm. Loads of activities only 9km from Picton which is just 1 hour from Sydney.

Mowbray Park is one of the largest agricultural tourism farms in the Sydney basin, offering everything from day visits to farm stays and even birthday parties. It’s a great day out for the whole family. We’ve all been to zoos and seen the exotic and the unusual but this is what a real farm looks like and we can show you how it all works.

As well as having a great time all visitors to Mowbray Park Farm leave with a greater understanding of modern agriculture.

The team at Mowbray Park place emphasis on sustainable practices and they lead by example, making sure the health and safety of their animals is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. This is demonstrated in Mowbray Park’s Horsemanship Camps which focuses on Natural Horsemanship. This is about the relationship between human and horse. These camps suit 8 – 16 year olds and they run each school holidays for five

days.

You can visit Mowbray Park Farm for a day, overnight or a whole weekend.

As well as supervised farm activities, horse and pony rides, you can swim, play tennis, go canoeing, discover the wetlands area, try archery even throw a boomerang.

There is sheep shearing, whip cracking, hayrides, animal feeding, camp fire nights and bush dances. If you’re up for it bring your mountain bike, or your running shoes, our 9km track is just one more thing to do at Mowbray Park Farm.

On many of the walking tracks in Wollondilly Shire no mobile phone coverage is available. We advise that you let someone know that you will be taking one of these walks. The following risks may be encountered when accessing these walking tracks and persons doing so partake at their own risk – uneven ground, slippery surfaces, insects, snakes.

Robert Sloss is more than just an avid bushwalker; he is a generous and go-getting member of the Wollondilly community. Whilst walking along Tahmoor’s Bridging Track with his dog, Rosie, following closely behind, he speaks of the passion he has for bushwalking and his admiration for Wollondilly.

Robert became involved in bushwalking in 1949 at the age of 13. Amongst his portfolio of achievements are mapping and leading a bushwalk from Mittagong to the Nattai Valley. He forged over 30 new bushwalks and has published 12 comprehensive bushwalking guide books of Wollondilly and its surrounding areas. Additionally, Robert is a pioneer for the Wollondilly community, voluntarily giving his time to maintain the aesthetics and accessibility of the tracks, so these bushwalks can be enjoyed by Wollondilly’s tourists and locals. He strongly advocates for people to take up bushwalking for a good way to exercise,

to meet friends and to try something new.

Fortunately, Wollondilly is gifted with an abundance of tracks suitable for beginners, in areas such as Appin, Bargo, Picton and Thirlmere. These tracks are not only easy for the bushwalking novice, they are also naturally beautiful.

Robert particularly recommends that beginners to bushwalking try Thirlmere Lakes, one of the safe yet beautiful bushwalking tracks that Wollondilly has to offer.

In Robert’s eyes the vast range of bushwalking tracks; the Shire’s natural beauty; and relaxed rural feel are what make Wollondilly special.

Robert Sloss Publications have their genesis in the three 1988 Bi-centenary 7 day celebration bushwalks, from Katoomba to Mittagong, a distance of 140km. Constant requests for maps and notes for this walk resulted in the publishing of the Ensign Barrallier Guide Book. Having been bitten by the literary bug the Author then set out to record all the known tracks in the bushwalking areas between Blaxland and Nowra. He has discovered near forgotten walks as well as creating over 18 new walks.

The Upper Nepean dams offer the opportunity to walk across the dam walls for impressive views of the lakes upstream and gorges downstream. Each of the dams have beautiful viewing areas, and offer picnic areas with drinking water, barbeques, play equipment and toilets.

Cataract Dam is located on the Cataract River, a tributary of the Nepean River, just below the junction with the Loddon River. By June 1903 much of the area to be submerged had already been cleared of timber.

For the first time in Australia, pre-cast moulded concrete blocks were used in construction for the upstream face of the dam. They were hauled to the site from an open factory on the banks of the Loddon River. Cement and other supplies were delivered to the site by steam tractors hauling trailer trains over rough roads from Campbelltown, about 28 kilometres away.

The dam was completed in 1907 and cost about $1.3 million. When Cataract

filled to capacity for the first time in January 1911, it soon became clear that the spillway should be widened to prevent any risk of floodwaters overtopping the dam wall. This work was completed in 1915. In 1968 a large flood saw the water level climb 1.5 metres overnight reaching 75 millimetres below the walkways across the wall. About 150 million litres of water was discharged out of the old spillway.

Circa 1838 /39: Built by the families of John Wild of “Vanderville” and Major Russell of “Orthez” for their servants and families, it is constructed of local timber. Archival photos show the church to have been originally L shaped but it had to be extensively renovated in 1923 due to damage by white ants. The church was renovated again in 1983 by The Oaks Historical Society volunteers. The cemetery contains some interesting headstones, included that of First Fleeter, Henry Kable, and caskets removed from Burragorang Valley before it was flooded for the Warragamba Dam.

THE HISTORIAN

27

The air is clean, the water fresh and clear. Yet deep below the city’s premier water reservoir rest the

vil lages that Sydney forgot.

Lost to the modern world were farms, shops, an historic church and homes were abandoned in the 1950s to make way for one of the most ambitious projects in Australian history: Warragamba Dam. Burragorang embodied classic Australiana, unspoiled in its isolation from greater Sydney until it was submerged in 1956.For tourists, the valley conjures images of tin-roofed farmhouses, stern hills and drovers. The villages had a rustic charm untouched by the city rush.

Legend has it that the church doors heaved inwards as water engulfed the valley. From the Burragorang lookout in Nattai, some claim they’ve seen the church spire peeking through the shallows. But while myth and mystery prevails, where does legend end and real life begin?

Although most structures were destroyed, all was not lost to the deep, explains Trish Hill, President of The Oaks Historical Society. “All evidence suggests that most of the structures, including the church, were dismantled or demolished before the flood.

“But many things were relocated. The old church bell is now at the Wollondilly Heritage Centre and Museum in The Oaks,” says Trish, who volunteers at the museum. The museum is also home to a timber and slab cottage, a replica of a typical home in the valley before the flood.Today, stone remnants from the church are scattered throughout buildings in neighbouring regions. But what has become of the graves?

“A lot of people forget to ask about that!” says Trish. “Many of the graves and headstones were excavated. Some went to St Matthews at The Oaks and some to Camden.”

But while the pioneering spirit of the Warragamba lives on, few pause to remember the great sacrifices of the venture. Steadfast residents did not go down without a fight. The feat that tamed the Australian landscape also stripped countless families of their homes and communities. A Burragorang Valley Defence League was formed to argue the case against damming the valley, but the deal had already been done.

“In the end, property owners received poor compensation. They had little security for the future,” says Trish.

The ‘Thirlmere Rowing Club’ was set up to honour the nearby Thirlmere Lakes and ask the question, “where do the rowers go now?” With no water to row in or even take a swim, the Thirlmere Rowing Club was established to give everyone somewhere to relax, pay tribute and remember what the Thirlmere Lakes once was. Take a quiet moment to reflect and raise a glass, here’s cheers to the Thirlmere Rowers.
