These are the words that begin eachSundays service at Unity Temple UnitarianUniversalist Congregation. Shortly

    afterwards, the Congregations Covenantbegins:

Love is the doctrine of this Congregation. Thesearch for truth is its sacrament. And service is ourprayer.

Many people are unfamiliar with theUnitarian Universalist religion. Senior ministerRev. Alan Taylor explains. We focus on lifebefore death. The central question for us is not

What do you believe? but instead How shallwe live?

What binds us together is our sharedcommitment to living our values of respect, compassion, integrity, service, creativity, andcourage. We aim to cultivate a communitywhere all can grow and support one another inliving our values.

We are a house of worship where everyoneis encouraged to come as you are. We wonttell you to change who you are, but we willchallenge you to live with honesty, withcourage, with hope. We will challenge you to

connect with others and with the spirit of life, which many of us, though not all of us, callGod.

We strive to live up to this simple ideal: Wewill care for you and call upon you to care forothers.

We offer a full religious education programfor children during both our services headedby Rev. Emily Gage, our Minister of FaithDevelopment. Our Music Program, led byMartha Swisher, is renowned.

At Unity Temple, we are more than just afabulous building. We are a vibrant communityand spiritual home striving to support itsmembers to faithfully live our shared values.

Fair Oaks Presbyterian ChurchYouth mission trip travels to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation

As the dog days of summer rolled intoOak Park, seventy teenagers and adultleaders from Fair Oaks Presbyterian

Church climbed aboard two buses and rolled

out of town. For a week in July the churchs

youth group traveled to the Pine Ridge

Indian Reservation to be of service to this

    economically challenged Native American

population. Painting and repairing low income

housing and being youth volunteers at a local

club for area children were activities that

gave the Fair Oaks youth group opportunity

to extend outreach to the people of this

    underserved community.

The teens had a variety of experiences, but

all were moved and sobered by working with

the people of Pine Ridge, whose futures are

dim. With alcoholism and drug abuse beingprevalent, unemployment at Pine Ridge hoversbetween 80-85% of the population.

Fair Oaks Church is committed and veryactive in its ministry to youth. One of thelargest ministries at the church is the afterschool Wednesday Logos program where over100 children and youth gather at the churchto participate in Bible study, Worship Skills,Recreation and Play, and Family Meal Time. Theheart and focus of Logos is building Christianrelationships and seeing all people as children

    of God.

Weekly Sunday school is offered for childrenand adults, as well as multiple 34 weekDiscipleBible studies.

we ALL need a spiritual home

    T

en years ago, the final act of many 9/11victims was one of love. Facing the

unthinkable, their parting gesture wasto reach out to family and friends knowingthat in the end relationships are what mattermost.

For many people in todays uncertain world, the need for relationships a communitywhere we are known and loved includesa spiritual home. Adults and children alikeneed a place where lives are shaped by love, hope, service, and forgiveness. Sadly, toomany places of worship have not been alwaysbeen expressing fear instead of hope, andintolerance instead of love.

This is NOT the case, however, at St.Christophers Episcopal Church in OakPark, where we are committed to the greatcommandment that Jesus quoted from theHebrew Scripture. You shall love the Lord yourGod with all your heart, with all your soul, withall your mind, and with all your strength, saidJesus, and you shall love your neighbor asyourself.

We are committed to peace and unityamong people, much as people around theworld were the day after9/11. Many reachedacross boundaries of faith, race, and class to

connect not onlywith family and friends, but with perfect strangers. Jews, Muslims,Christians, atheists, and agnostics were

together in their shock, and quite honestly, filled houses of worship to capacity for weeks

after that fateful day. There was a sense of unity that helped us

survive those first days of trauma, and althoughten years later the context has changed, ourneed for communities of love and supporthas not. The economy is fragile, politicalcooperation diminished, and resources forcrisis response are drying up. We need eachother more than ever need honorable values, places of accountability, and a chance to makea better world together.
