This year the staff have been hard at work redesigning the curriculum to make it more relevant and engaging for the children. You might notice that some of our topics have changed and it is now called ENQUIRY. We believe that the children will benefit from

this type of learning by having more ownership, posing their own questions and

leading explorations.

On the school website, you will find a copy of the Year 3 Long Term Planning and I will also have copies available for you to take home with you if you would like one.

This academic year, we are introducing ‘Big Questions’ to our curriculum and learning. Each topic that Rowan class will learn about is based around a ‘big question’ which we will endeavour to try and answer as a class by the end of the topic. The ‘big questions’ Rowan Class will consider are…Term 1 – Do prehistoric people look like Fred Flintstone?Term 2 – What did the Romans do for us?Term 3 - Why does an earthquake make the earth shake? Why are there volcanoes in the sea?Term 4 - Where is the best/most important/most interesting country/continent to visit?' Term 5 – Would you rather a cactus in the desert or a penguin in Antarctica? Term 6 – Is it a kind of magic?

Important information For Term 1, PE lessons will take place on Monday and

Thursday afternoons: this will change throughout the year so please ensure that your child has a PE kit in school every day.

• In Year 3, your children will learn about a range of mathematical concepts and build on their existing learning from previous year groups.

• The long term maths plan on your tables details the topics from the national curriculum that Year 3 will be learning and in which order.

• It is very important that pupils learn their times table facts up to 12x12 ahead of their multiplication test in Year 4.

• TT Rockstars is a fantastic resource that allows children to learn their times table facts in a fun and engaging way. Children will be rewarded for regular use of TT Rockstars at weekends and out of school hours.

• We will be doing a range of multiplication activities throughout the year in class to support this further.

• All English lessons are linked to the enquiry of the term

• In Year 3, the children will be supported in increasing the length and quality of their written work. We will be focusing on developing and broadening vocabulary and their use of punctuation.

• We will also be continuing to develop their editing and proof reading skills using purple polishing pens.

• We have a lesson dedicated to Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar three times a week as well as short daily coverage of key Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar skills needed to compose their own work.

• We will be looking at a range of texts from a variety of genres, including Roman mythology, information texts, Stig of the Dump, explanation texts and poetry.

• We have lessons solely on Guided Reading 2-3 times a week. This is an opportunity to delve deeper into a text, focusing on inference, prediction and searching for evidence. The children are invited to have their own discussions around a text and share their opinions, providing reasons for this where possible.
