PSLE - a placement exam
• Need to reflect the relative achievement level of pupils within their peers.
• Places pupils into different courses according to their academic ability
• Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice.
20
The PSLE Aggregate Score
• Is a sum of scores
• Incorporates performance of pupils in all 4 subjects
• Allows pupils to be ranked fairly
Can raw scores be used?
NO !
Why Not?
• Different subjects have different levels of difficulty
• So are the spread of marks from the average mark, i.e. the standard deviation (spread = standard deviation)
MEASURE OF
S P R E A D
Narrow Wide
A need for standardisation of the raw scores
Transformed Score or T-Score
What is a T-Score?• It gives the relative position of a pupil’s
performance as compared to the performance of all the other pupils in that subject
• The raw mark obtained in the exam only shows how good the pupil is in that subject, not how good he is as compared to others
How is the Aggregate Scorecalculated?
By adding the T-Scores of the 4 subjects
What about Subject-based Banding?
• Pupils taking foundation subjects and other combinations, other than 4 standard subjects, are not shortchanged.
• The raw marks obtained in the exam by these pupils are also converted to T-score

Direct School Admission (DSA)

Entering a secondary school
PSLE/S1 Posting Exercise DSA
• Based on a student’s PSLE score• Most students enter secondary
schools this way
• Based on a diverse range of talents and achievements in specific academicsubjects or non-academic areas, beyond what the PSLE recognises
• Allows students to access school programmes to develop their talents
36
Changes to the DSA
All schools allowed to take in up to 20% of S1 non-IP intake
through the DSA
All schools to stop using general academic ability tests to select
students
Schools may offer DSA in more areasCheck the MOE DSA website in May for latest info on participating schools and DSA areas
Schools may stop using general academic ability tests to select students
Check schools’ websites for selection requirements

Students can apply online, through a single form

2019 DSA Exercise(2019 P6 Cohort)
Moving to an improved DSA
More choices and opportunities for students
2017 DSA Exercise(2017 P6 Cohort)
37
What is the timeline for a typical DSA-Sec Exercise?
May
DSA exercise starts. Apply through schools.
July
Shortlisting and selection by secondary schools. Each secondary school has different selection criteria for its categories and programmes. Schools will inform you of the selection outcome by Aug.
Indicate up to 3 ranked choices if you have more than 1 offer
October
You will know whether you have been allocated to a school through the DSA, at the same time you receive your PSLE results.
Late-November
38
Is the DSA right for your child?
Yes, if you have talent in an area which a school offers the DSA in
And are passionate about and committed to developing your child strengths in that area in that school
Talent
Passion
Commit-ment
39
Which school should he/she apply to?
• Look for a school whose programmes match his/her interests and talents
• Schools are looking out for students whose interests and talents they can develop further.
• Get the latest information about what each school offers by:• Visiting the MOE’s DSA website (will be updated by early May
2018): https://www.moe.gov.sg/admissions/direct-admissions/dsa-sec/overview
• Visiting school websites
• Attending schools’ Open Houses
40
Other important questions to ask
• Is your child able to cope with the school’s academic curriculum?• Learn more about the school’s academic standards
• Consult primary school teachers and your parents
• How many schools should he/she apply to? • Instead of applying to many DSA schools, what matters more is
choosing 1 or 2 schools that are just right for him/her. Remember every application takes time and effort.
41
What are the possible DSA outcomes?
• CO - Confirmed Offer Your child has a place reserved in the school as long as he/she qualifies for a course the school offers [i.e. Express, Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical)].
• WL - Waiting List This means he/she will only be considered if other students with Confirmed Offer choose not to go to that school during the School Preference stage. Allocation will be based on students’ rank on the school’s Waitlist.
• Unsuccessful If he/she is unsuccessful in all his/her applications, but still wish to enter the schools you applied for in the DSA, he/she can consider them again during the S1 Posting Exercise based on your PSLE results.
42
If I have a DSA Confirmed Offer, does it mean that his/her PSLE results will not matter?
• His/her PSLE results will still be used to determine the secondary school course you are eligible for [i.e. Express, Normal (Academic), Normal (Technical)]
• Even if he/she have a confirmed offer, he/she must qualify for a course offered by the school to be successfully admitted through the DSA.
43
Example: Jane has a DSA confirmed offer given by Achievement Secondary School, which offersthe Express Course only. However, Jane’s PSLE results qualify her for the Normal(Academic) course. Hence, Jane will not be able to go to Achievement SecondarySchool and will take part in the S1 Posting Exercise.
Multiple Pathways beyond Primary School
Catering to Students’ academic Strengths
• By 2018, all secondary schools offering the Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical) course will offer Subject-Based Banding.
• Students can take subjects in which they have done well at a higher academic level.
It is not about XXX school or XXX grades
• Encourage your child to find his Purpose
A Purpose will motivate them.A Purpose will keep their priorities straight
A Purpose will develop their potentialA Purpose will give them power to live in the present
A Purpose will them evaluate their progressJohn Maxwell
Purpose•Purpose is long term and there are many routes and ways to fulfil it.
•Failing a test, not getting into a course does not throw your child off.
•Don’t sweat over small stuff and do not be swayed by non-essentials
Purpose
Purpose produces persistence, perseverance and creative solutions
Purpose will serve as an internal compass and anchor, no matter what obstacles come in the way.

General Discipline @ YTPS
Yew Tee Primary SchoolReflective Learners, Gracious Citizens
A comprehensive description of the rules and regulations adopted at YTPS
is given in the Student Handbook. (pg 19-26)
Students who are booked four times for late coming will be issued a
letter of warning followed by a call to their parents. Late coming offences
will be recorded into School Offences Module (SOM) records and student’s
conduct grade will be affected.
‘FASHION’ Checks are carried out twice per term to ensure students comply
with school’s dress code & hairstyles. A student’s conduct grade may be
affected if they fail to keep in FASHION. As such, the school hopes to work
closely with parents to reinforce this.
The school adopts a holistic approach to discipline and the consequences
that follow to offences committed is a restorative one rather than a punitive
one.
Parents need to acknowledge on the Student Handbook (pg 26) that they
are aware of the school rules and that they have gone through them with
their child/ward.

How Can You Support Your Child?
PARENTS AS PARTNERS IN ART EDUCATION
What you can do?
Parents and families can complement children’s learning and development at home
by helping children make connections between what goes on in school and at
home to enrich their learning experience beyond the classroom. You could:
• encourage your child to talk about his/her experiences, express his/her
thoughts and feelings and explain how he/she solves problems and overcomes
challenges
• take time to engage your child in play/art making together
• refrain from judging when your child shows you his/her art.
• tell your child how happy you are to see his/her art and how it makes you feel.
Encourage him/her to keep creating art that he/she loves.
• Where possible, bring your child to visit local art exhibitions/art shows or go
on a sculpture walk to gather new ideas and be inspired!
