Cosmetics vs Cosmeceuticals
Examples of Cosmeceuticals
• AHAs
• BHAs
• Retinoids
• Vitamins
• Enzymes
• Botanicals
• Antioxidants
• Growth Factors
• Barrier Repair
• Cell Signaling
Functions of Cosmeceuticals • Mosturisers: increase GAG, improve
barrier function
• Exfoliators: decrease corneocyte
cohesion, increase cell mitosis, digest
dead cells
• Antioxidants/anti-inflammatories: prevent
oxidative stress and inflammation
• Cell Communicators: stimulate collagen
and GAG production, muscle
contraction, growth factors, cell repair
mechanisms etc.
• Correct skin conditions: acne, pigment,
wrinkles, photodamage

Science of Skin Aging
Signs of Skin Aging
• Lines & wrinkles
• Sun damage & pigmentation
• Dull, sallow complexions
• Rough skin
• Dry skin
• Sagging/elastosis
• Skin thickening - stratum corneum
• Thin skin - epidermis
• Inflamed skin
Oxidative Stress –
the Major Cause of Skin Aging!
• Oxidative stress is damage caused to cells by reactive oxygen
molecules, most notably – free radicals
• Oxidative stress is the same natural process that causes metal
to rust and apple slices to turn brown
• Oxygen is a toxic, pollutant, mutagenic, bi-radical, dangerous,
poisonous, gas!
• Oxygen is absolutely necessary for all aerobic organisms in the
production of cellular energy
• Oxygen – the double edged sword – both the Boon and the Bane
of life!
What are Free Radicals?
“Agents of Aging” • Free radicals are unstable molecules with
unpaired electrons that must return to a stable state
• Free radicals damage and destroy essential
skin components such as phospholipids and
collagen
• Free-radical damage expresses itself as aging!
• The main source of free radicals is the oxygen
molecule!
What are ANTIOXIDANTS?
• Antioxidants are molecules that protect cells from oxidative stress
• Antioxidants work by neutralizing or scavenging dangerous free radicals
• Biological Antioxidants
COSMECEUTICALS Those antioxidants
required by the human body (e.g. Vitamins
A, C, E & Pro-A) either made by the body,
acquired through diet, or by external
application to the skin
• Bioengineered Antioxidants
SUPERCEUTICALS® mitochondria-
targeted antioxidants (e.g. Idebenone)
relieve oxidative stress by entering the
respiratory chain; the only antioxidants that
fight both intrinsic and extrinsic aging

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
• AHAs were the first molecules to start the cosmeceutical
revolution
• AHAs are still the best cosmeceuticals for skin
normalization and basic anti-aging skin health & fitness
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs):
Derivation
AHAs are members of a food group
of naturally occurring organic acids
typically derived from fruits and foods
Advanced AHA Benefits
All Skin Conditions will benefit from AHAs
• Maintenance of healthy skin – proper skin fitness
• Normalizes skin renewal rate
• Hydrates the skin from within – stimulates HA
• Increases epidermal thickness
• Increases dermal proteins (collagen and elastin)
• Photodamage & Skin discolorations: Hyperpigmentation– evens skin tone
• Fine lines & wrinkles – decreases visible signs of skin aging
• Acne & problem-prone skin: improves complexion
• Scarring
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
Mechanism of Action
• Think of the stratum corneum as the
roof of your house
• Dead skin cells can be UP TO 80
layers thick!
• Think: burnt toast!
• Exfoliation is essential to healthy skin--
FACE and BODY
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
Mechanism of Action
• AHAs work by two main mechanisms of action - they are
natural chemical exfoliators and potent moisturizers
• The result of topical AHA use is skin NORMALIZATION – a
return of the skin to “normal” moisture content and proper
exfoliation rate – back to basic skin fitness and health
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
Moisturization
• AHAs are true moisturizers, capable of improving the skin’s natural
ability to bind moisture by increasing glycosaminoglycan (GAG)
deposition in the epidermis and dermis
• Typical moisturizers prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by
forming an occlusive barrier on the surface of the skin
With Typical Moisturizer Dry Skin With AHA Use
Hyaluronic Acid: HA
Essential Skin Glycosaminoglycan (GAG)
• The Skin’s natural ’Moisture Retention’ Substance
– Binds 1,000 times its own molecular weight in water: skin ’sponges’
• Critical ’Extra Cellular Matrix’ (ECM) medium for cell mobility
– Tissue Differentiation
– Wound healing
• Rapid Anabolism and Catabolism in Skin
– 48 hr half-life
– Anabolism naturally induced by presence of
lactic acid, the cell signal agent for HA
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
Why is pH Important ?
• Skin surface pH is between 4 and 6.5 in healthy people
• Skincare products with a pH below can be very irritating for the skin
• Low pH is not necessary to deliver optimal product results
Acidic Normal Skin Water Basic
0 4 6,5 7 14
When performing professional peels, a more acidic pH will dramatically
reduce the contact time - reducing the irritation value
PRIORI®’s Advanced AHA
Advanced AHA - Advantage

• Lactic is natural to the body
• Lactic is a superior moisturizer

• Lactic is the ”cell signal” AHA
