In Need of Some Inspiration…

Don’t think you’re fit enough to ride a bike? Think again…

“I have only been on one led ride but I have definitely felt the benefits already! I think it helped immensely that we had a very supportive and informative instructor, Chris, who was completely non-judgmental and encouraged me from start to finish. I would have never have taken up biking on my own so this has opened up a new active hobby. I also met new people and discovered new sides to the town that were unknown to me”. Tasneem.

“In order to get to work I have to walk 2.3 miles which takes around forty minutes. I can cut the amount of travel time in half if I bike. It’s also useful to help keep my stamina up and stay fit and healthy. As well as being a good way to spend time with mates and do something a little more active than playing video games and going out drinking. Moreover I wanted to try something new and hadn’t ridden a bike for three years”. Anonymous.

Huddersfield students pedal to combat exam stress

Students at the University of Huddersfield and Kirklees College are calming their nerves by taking up cycling and walking to the exam room, as part of the charity Sustrans’ Active Travel project.

Page 5: Welcome! · Web viewHuddersfield Active Travel Summer News Letter Welcome! In this edition Get Back Into Cycling with ‘Try Cycling’ and Our Innovative Loan Bikes Know Your Travel

The group organises regular cycle rides to the College and University, as well as lunchtime events to give students a breath of fresh air during the intense exam period, while this month students at Huddersfield joined a walk to work challenge.

Sarah Starkey, a student at University of Huddersfield said: “I am quick to get stressed but the rides helped to keep my mind off exams and left me feeling happy afterwards. I want to get more confident on a bike and hope to ride to university next year.”

Michael Beasley, a student at University of Huddersfield said that cycling helped him get fitter and deal with stress better. “I have gained muscle and lost weight and I generally feel better about myself mentally. It has helped with the stress of work and I have got better control over stress.”

Chris Wilson, Sustrans’ Active Travel Officer in Huddersfield said: “Exercise is a great way to control nerves during exam time and get you mentally prepared, but it can be difficult to fit in during a busy period.

Cycling to university or college means students can integrate some exercise into their travel time and some fresh air before sitting in the exam room. We have a variety of events to encourage active travel to the university, as well as cycle rides for leisure at other times. Non-students from the city are also welcome too.”

Cycle Through Huddersfield? Proposed Route ConsultationThis is sent on behalf of Kirklees Council’s Investment & Regeneration Service

The below map of Huddersfield Town Centre shows the routes that the council will focus on developing with the funding that the West Yorkshire Combined Authority has recently secured through the “Cycle City Ambition Grant 2” (CCAG2) from Department for Transport.

The concept of these route corridors has been drawn up in discussion with the ‘Infrastructure’ sub-group of the Cycle Kirklees Consultation Group (CKCG). At this stage the plan is simply identifying routes for further consideration. The level of treatment and whether any routes are one- or two -way needs to be determined though the design process, in consultation with the Infrastructure sub-group.

If you have any comments please bring them to the CKCG meeting this Thursday evening or feed your comments direct to the Infrastructure Group, the contact for which is John Lewis [email protected]

John will be presenting this information at the meeting, and it will be for the Infrastructure sub-group to liaise with the wider CK Consultation Group as work progresses.
