FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK Happy August! As we begin what is often considered the last vacation month of the year, we say farewell to Deacon Richard Ramm who has been the parish Administrator for going on nine years. Deacon Richard is moving into retirement, where “vacation months” will matter no more! On behalf of our parish, I extend a hearty “THANK YOU!” to Deacon Richard who has juggled numerous duties in caring for the Cathedral plant, including our aging school building and the leasing of it to the Washoe County School District as a charter school. I am grateful to Deacon Richard who has been of help and support to me as I step into those duties and who will be available to me if questions arise in the future. May you be blessed in your retirement, Deacon Richard, and may you be strengthened as you continue your diaconal ministry at St. Albert’s and in the greater community of Reno! Thank you for your dedication over these years to Saint Thomas Aquinas Cathedral.

Today we begin what is often referred to as the “Bread of Life Discourse” in the Gospel of John. Over the next few weeks we will hear this discourse and the dialogue between Jesus and the crowds listening to Him, in-cluding those who would be his disciples. The evangelist John introduces his listeners to Jesus’ proclamation that He is the Bread of Life, clearly a teaching on the gift of the Eucharist to all believers. The very word, Eucha-rist, which means thanksgiving, expresses our awareness of the presence of Jesus Christ to us in a unique and wonderful way when we receive from his table. As the gospel unfolds we learn that when Jesus calls his disciples to eat his body and drink his blood, it becomes a stumbling block to some who were listening to him, even some who were already his disciples. “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” they ask. Today, too, some can get stuck on a literal understanding of “flesh” and cannot see beyond the forms of bread and wine. Yet we believe that while the “form” of bread and wine remains the same, Jesus becomes present to us in the changed “substance” (thus, transubstantiation). These are philosophical terms that express a reality greater than human experience, a mystery that lifts us into intimate union with Jesus Christ.

This is a good time for us to reflect on Holy Communion and the call for all the baptized to receive from the table of the Lord. Some people come to Mass but do not receive Communion. Perhaps they were taught that you must “go to confession” (or celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation) before receiving Communion. That is only the case if someone is in a very serious state of sin. Some also were taught that if you are divorced you can no longer receive Communion. That is only true if someone is divorced and remarried outside of the Church. Our general teaching is toward receiving Communion, not away from it. When you are struggling with an issue in your life that is a time when you most especially need the strength of the Eucharist. We teach and believe that there also is forgiveness of sins in the Eucharist itself, our prayer during the Mass demonstrates that as well. If you believe that there is something preventing you from taking Communion, please contact Fr. Lucio or myself so that we can talk about it. Communion is not a reward for good behavior, it is an opportunity, a gift freely given, to grow ever closer to the Lord Jesus Christ who desires that all receive his body and blood.

Next Sunday, Bishop Calvo will be with us at the 9:30 AM Mass for my formal installation as Rector at the Cathedral. My role became official when Bishop Calvo appointed me, so we will now celebrate that in its ritual form. All are invited to the installation Mass and to a barbeque later that day, starting at noon, which will be host-ed by the Knights of Columbus. I hope to see you there. Some have asked, what does the word “rector” mean? A Cathedral is the official parish of the bishop of a diocese, it is where his chair resides (“cathedra” means chair). Thus, the bishop is the official pastor of the Cathedral. However, a bishop also has the duty to oversee the entire diocese and so typically cannot attend to the day to day pastoral and administrative needs of the Cathedral and its parishioners. Therefore, a rector is appointed to do that in similar fashion to a pastor in any parish. I ask for your prayers as I move forward as rector, that I may be a faithful servant to the will of God and the good of our community. Fr. Chuck
