FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK Happy Veteran’s Day weekend! The origin of this day lies following World War I and was initially called

“Armistice Day”. Coinciding with the anniversary of the armistice (truce) on November 11, 1918. In 1938 legislation was passed that November 11 was to be “dedicated to the cause of world peace & to be hereafter celebrated and known as Armistice Day.” The legal holiday honored World War I Veterans. There was hope that it would be the last “world war”. Sadly, that was not to be the case and after World War II and the Korean War, legislation was passed to change the name to Veterans Day, honoring American veterans of all wars. In practice, this day typically is expanded further to include the acknowledgement of all veterans. Mindful of the roots of this day and through many conversations with veterans over the years, I think the best way we can honor veterans is to strive for world peace. Pope Saint Paul VI was noted for saying, “If you want peace, work for justice.” May we always strive for respect and dignity for every person living in our land and throughout the world and may we always strive for dialogue and non-violent means of resolving differences and disputes everywhere. THANK YOU, VETS!

This weekend please give a warm welcome to Fr. Anthony Ngyuen, C.Ss.R., speaking on behalf of Unbound for poor children and elderly people in great need. See the bulletin insert to learn more about the good work of Unbound. Fr. Anthony’s presence is giving me an opportunity to get away for the weekend, but I have supported Unbound for many years. Welcome Fr. Anthony!

As you listen to Fr. Anthony and the needs of those in foreign countries whom we can help in big ways even with just a little money each month, I would like to call your attention to another need that isn’t for money, but for your time and presence. The city is again in great need for shelter for the homeless. You may recall last year that not only was an overflow facility utilized but an overflow to the overflow needed to be established. The same is true this year, and probably with even greater numbers, as our lack of afforda-ble places to live continues to loom. The “overflow to the overflow” will be a large, heated tent placed on the tarmac near the men’s shelter on Record Street. Like last year, it will rely on volunteers to staff it, mostly from church and temple groups throughout the city. Able people of faith step up to make this happen so that people on the streets do not have to suffer (or, literally, die) by exposure to the very cold and sometimes wet winter months. The tent will open next Friday, November 16, and will continue every night through February or March. Hours each night are 8:30 PM--5:00 AM. I am looking to form at least one team, hopefully more, who will share the night watch, at least 3 at a time, in 3 shifts. Thus, each team would be comprised of 9 people. If enough groups in the city step up, we only will have to cover two or three nights each month. The good people of Temple Sinai already have committed to covering December 24 or 25, since, as Jews, those are not observant holy days for them as they are for Christians. Please do pray about this crucial project and pray whether you might be able to participate. If you can help, please call or email me. I would like to have a brief meeting about this on Wednesday evening, November 21 at 5:30 PM in Righini Hall. It would be helpful to know how many can help prior to that time. Thank you for your prayers.

One of the reasons for our homeless population is the lack of affordable housing. Next Sunday, Novem-ber, 18th, at 10:45 AM in Righini Hall, we will host a speaker who will share his story about being on the streets and his struggle to keep his job and find housing. Please plan to come, listen and learn. Awareness is the 1st step to bringing forth change. For this concern and for all who are homeless, we recall Jesus’ words in the Gospel of Matthew, “what you do for the least of these, you do for me”.

Blessings to you all this 32nd week in Ordinary Time.

SENIOR MINISTRY NEWS As we approach the holidays, the Senior Ministry is once again planning for its Annual Wish Tree Program. This program depends on the mercy of our fellow Chris ans to help others. Last year we were able to gi 43 less fortunate seniors. Our goal this year is to gi 60 or more. If you know a senior, 65 or older, who may be coping with loneliness, medical, financial, family issues, etc., and would be responsive to receiving a Christmas gi through the ministry we would love to hear about them. We all know that the joyous Holiday Season can be very difficult for some. Hence, it is our hope that in some way this program is able to reach out & afford them the confidence that there are people who care about them. The “Wish Tree” will be placed in the main lobby of the Cathedral on Friday, November 23th. More details in next week’s bulle n. Remember: The Li le Thri Shop islocated at 94 E. Glendale next to Juicy’s. We’re open Tuesday thru Friday from 11:00 AM—5:00 PM & Saturday from 10:00 AM—5:00 PM. We have received dona ons in the past few weeks of new, gently used and an que items which might include just the gi (s) you have been searching for. A , T S

Venga a nosotros tu reino Señor'.
