Confession of Sin: James 1:13-15 Rev. Curt StraeterLet no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Assurance of Pardon: Hebrews 4:14-16 Rev. Curt StraeterSince then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Proclamation of the Word: “Forgiveness and Faith for the Impossible”Rev. Curt Straeter

Luke 17:1-10

Sermon Text 1 And he said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come,

but woe to the one through whom they come! 2 It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin. 3 Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, 4 and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”

5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” 6 And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

7 “Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? 8 Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? 9 Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? 10 So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’”

Sermon NotesLuke 17:1-10

“Forgiveness and Faith for the Impossible”

Despite the inevitable mess of our sin, Jesus Christ enables forgiveness and increases faith.

I. Jesus' Exhortations on Temptation and Forgiveness

II. Plea for Faith

III. Jesus' Response to the Plea

Small Group / Discussion questions:

1) Who in your life might you need to seek forgiveness from for putting stumbling blocks in their way because of your own sin?

2) How would you quantify your own degree of faith? Is it a mustard seed, or do you still feel far off? How does our sin also affect how we feel about our faith?

3) How does pride or self-dependency get in the way of God-dependency? How do Jesus' words that crush pride function to increase faith?

Page 9: Welcome [assets.forestgate.org]assets.forestgate.org/2020-05-17bulletin.docx · Web viewAnd the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this

*Closing Song: “The Servant King”Author: Graham Kendrick © 1983 Thankyou Music (Admin. by Capitol CMG Publishing) CCLI Song # 78897

From heav'n You came helpless babeEnter'd our world Your glory veil'dNot to be served but to serveAnd give Your life that we might live

This is our God the Servant KingHe calls us now to follow HimTo bring our lives as a daily offeringOf worship to the Servant King

There in the garden of tearsMy heavy load He chose to bearHis heart with sorrow was tornYet not my will but Yours He said

This is our God the Servant KingHe calls us now to follow HimTo bring our lives as a daily offeringOf worship to the Servant King

Come see His hands and His feetThe scars that speak of sacrificeHands that flung stars into spaceTo cruel nails Surrendered

This is our God the Servant KingHe calls us now to follow HimTo bring our lives as a daily offeringOf worship to the Servant King

So let us learn how to serveAnd in our lives enthrone HimEach other's needs to preferFor it is Christ we're serving

This is our God the Servant KingHe calls us now to follow HimTo bring our lives as a daily offeringOf worship to the Servant King
