Welcome.Sun Stud is proud to present an outstanding lineup of stallions for the 2018 breeding season, including the addition of two stars for tomorrow: National Defense and Thronum .
A Champion 2YO with devastating speed, National Defense won his maiden by 6 lengths before going on capture his Group One by 4.5 lengths and is a son of incredible speed source, Invincible Spirit, also sire of boom stallion, I Am Invincible.
Thronum, meanwhile, is a Group Two Australia Stakes winning sprinter and Group One William Reid runnerup by the all-conquering Snitzel, a rapidly emerging sire of sires. And what a family … Thronum is closely related to Winx’s sire, Street Cry and Shamardal, who have over 230 stakes winners between them!
Sun Stud also welcomes back 8-times Champion Victorian sire, Bel Esprit, where he’ll be joined by his Queensland stablemate for the past couple of seasons in Love Conquers All, a Champion Australian First Season Sire.
Others highlighting the roster in 2018 are leading first season sires, Fighting Sun and Fiorente, the phenomenal Magnus (top 15 Australian sire), Black Caviar’s only full brother at stud, Moshe, brilliant 2YO, Ready For Victory, whose first weanlings have really caught the eye and Champion Victorian First Season Sire, Squamosa.
We likewise await the first foals of dual Group One winner, Palentino, who covered an outstanding book of mares at Sun Stud in 2017.
Over the next 50 pages or so, you will find something for every breeder and, importantly, Sun Stud will again offer payment upon live foal for all stallions.
Good luck with the season ahead … there is nothing more rewarding than breeding a winner and we look forward to following your success, both in the sales ring and on the racetrack.

It ’s little surprise that FIORENTE is so quick out of the gates with his first-crop of runners, particularly given that the Melbourne Cup/Australian Cup winner was regarded as the ‘Fast Stayer. ’ Rated 125 by Timeform and winner of over $6.2 million in prizemoney, FIORENTE also won the 1600m Group Two Feehan Stakes and was Group One-placed in the 1400m All Aged Stakes.

New to Victoria in 2018, LOVE CONQUERS ALL was leading Queensland First, Second and Third Season Sire, while – in 2015/16 – was Champion Australian Sire by winners. The best indication of how much they have trained on, 76% of LOVE CONQUERS ALL’S first crop runners are winners and 9% are stakes horses to runners! And with the likes of Savanna Amour , I ’m A Rippa , Mr Marbellouz and a big crop of 2YOs on their way, there is plenty of Love to go around.

NATIONAL DEFENSE made a huge impression from day one, winning on debut by 6 lengths. The flashy bay then showed he was the superior juvenile on the continent by capturing the prestigious Group One Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere by 4.5 lengths and it came as little surprise when he was named Champion French 2YO and rated 118 by Timeform.
Importantly, NATIONAL DEFENSE is by Champion European Sire, Invincible Spirit (108 stakes winners), whose son, I Am Invincible is one of Australia’s most exciting stallions.
NATIONAL DEFENSE covered an outstanding opening book of mares at the Irish National Stud earlier this year.

N A T I O N A L D E F E N S E
Invincible Spirit and sons have sired 10 stakes winners out of Danehill line mares, nine at Group level. National Defense should be good with Danehill, as he is out of a mare by Kingmambo, whose dam is a Northern Dancer/Graustark cross, where Danehill is a Northern Dancer/His Majesty (brother to Graustark) cross. The Danehill Dancer branch, which gives inbreeding to the Danzig/Sharpen Up cross, has been particularly good with two Group winners out of mares by Danehill Dancer, and two Group winners out of mares by his son, Choisir. This suggests mares by Mastercraftsman (a parallel Danzig/Mr. Prospector cross to National Defense) and Starspangledbanner.
Invincible Spirit and sons also have Group stakes winners out of mares by Danehill sons, Exceed and Excel (sire of Helmet, who gives inbreeding to the family of National Defense); Catbird; Oratorio; and Redoute’s Choice (sire of Snitzel, Stratum, Not A Single Doubt, Al Samer – a parallel cross to the dam of Kingmambo, the broodmare sire of National Defense), Beneteau (who brings in Fairy King, a three-quarters brother to Nureyev), Bradbury’s Luck and Nadeem. Other sons of Danehill that can be considered are Commands (a brother to Danewin), Danzero, Al Maher, Blackfriars, Danasinga, Dansili, Darci Brahma, Elvstroem, Fastnet Rock, Holy Roman Emperor, Keeper (who looks particularly interesting), Lion Hunter and Rock of Gibraltar.
There are several stakes winners by Invincible Spirit and sons out of mares by other Danzig line stallions, including Champion Shalaa out of a mare by War Chant; Champion Brazen Beau out of a mare by Snadee; a Group stakes winner out of a mare by Anabaa; and a stakes winner out of a mare by Langfuhr. Crossed back over their own Green Desert branch of Danzig, Invincible Spirit and sons have sired Group One winner Hellbent out of a mare by Volksraad, a Group stakes winner out of a mare by Oasis Dream, and stakes winners from daughters of Desert Sun and Desert Prince.
National Defense is out of a mare by Kingmambo, a strain that has combined extremely well with Sadler’s Wells – the cross gives a combination of the three-quarters brothers Nureyev and Sadler’s Wells. The cross of Invincible Spirit and sons with Sadler’s Wells line mares has produced 17 stakes winners, including Group One winner Charm Spirit from a daughter of Montjeu (sire of Authorized, Pour Moi and Tavistock) and Group stakes winners out of mares from Teofilo and his sire, Galileo (effectively a reverse cross to Kingmambo, and also sire of New Approach), as well as stakes winners out of mares by High Chaparral (sire of So You Think), In the Wings (sire of Singspiel) and Batshoof. Other sources of Sadler’s Wells that could be tried here include Blevic (by Scenic), Barathea (sire of Tobougg, who could fit well here) and King of Kings.
Fairy King is a brother to Sadler’s Wells, and there is a stakes winner by a son of Invincible Spirit out of a Fairy King mare, and two stakes winners by Invincible Spirit out of mares by Fairy King son, Encosta de Lago, who could be brought in through Northern Meteor (who is from the same family as Nureyev and Fairy King), Manhattan Rain and Delago Brom. Other sons of Fairy King include Shinko King, Helissio and Falbrav.
There are 13 stakes winners on a cross of Invincible Spirit and sons with mares from the male line of Nureyev (a three-quarters brother to Sadler’s Wells and Fairy King). National Defense already has Nureyev through his broodmare sire, Kingmambo, but there are 63 stakes winners, eight Group One, with inbreeding to Nureyev, where one source is Kingmambo. On this cross there four stakes winners, two Group One, out of mares by Pivotal (who could be brought in through Captain Rio and Excellent Art, both reverse crosses to Kingmambo); there is a trio of Invincible Spirit line stakes winners out of mares by Fasliyev (a reverse cross to Kingmambo); two stakes winners one Group stakes winner out of mares by Peintre Celebre (a reverse Nureyev/Raise a Native cross to Kingmambo, with the Kingmambo through the similarly-bred Mr. Prospector and
Analysis by Alan Porter of Pedigree Consultants

“ “
Alydar); and a Group stakes winner out of a mare by Stravinsky; there are also stakes winners out of mares by Soviet Star and his son, Starcraft (sire of Star Witness).
Topsider is similarly-bred to Nureyev, Sadler’s Wells and Fairy King, and there are three stakes winners by Invincible Spirit out mares from the Topsider line, and this line might be found in Australia through Air Express (by Salse) and Fraar. From the Storm Cat branch of Northern Dancer, Invincible Spirit and sons have sired six stakes winners, including Group winners out of mares by Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg and Turffontein); Giant’s Causeway and Tale of the Cat. There are also two stakes winners out of mares by Giant’s Causeway son, Shamardal (a reverse Northern Dancer/Mr. Prospector cross to National Defense, and himself sire of Lope de Vega). From the Nijinsky II branch of Northern Dancer, Invincible Spirit has been exceptional with mares carrying Green Tune and his sire, Green Dancer (sire of Senor Pete). There is also a stakes winner out of a mare by Ali-Royal and two from daughters of that horse’s sire, Royal Academy (sire from Bel Esprit). Invincible Spirit and sons have outperformed opportunity with Last Tycoon line mares, getting four stakes winners, two including a Group One winner out of mares by Marju, and another out of a mare by O’Reilly. It would also be possible to introduce Last Tycoon through Iglesia and his son, Written Tycoon.
Invincible Spirit and sons have done extremely well with Mr. Prospector line mares, getting more than 30 stakes winners. National Defense is a product of this cross, but breeding a stallion back over his own broodmare sire line often works well. From the Gone West line, he has Group One winner Kingman out of mare by Zamindar, and a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s brother, Zafonic (sire of Iffraaj, who is bred on the same cross as Kingmambo and Xaar). The Gone West line can be introduced through Grand Slam (broodmare sire of an Invincible Spirit line stakes winner), Elusive Quality (sire of Sepoy and Elusive City) and Mr. Greeley.
The Machiavellian branch of Mr. Prospector has been exceptional with Invincible Spirit, producing nine stakes winners, including two Group One winners out of mares by Machiavellian himself, as well as Group stakes winners out of mares by Medicean (sire of Dutch Art) and Vettori, which would also encourage trying daughters of Street Cry (sire of Street Sense and Street Boss) as well as mares by Almutawakel and No Excuse Needed. Classic winner Lawman is by Invincible Spirit out of a mare by Gulch (sire of Thunder Gulch); there are two stakes winners, one Group from the Invincible Spirit line out of mares by Hussonet; there are four stakes winners, one Group One, out of mares by Seeking
the Gold, and another out of a mare by that horse’s son, Secret Savings (sire of Dash For Cash); and a Group stakes winner out of a mare by Mujtahid (by Woodman, also sire of Hawk Wing, Hector Protector and Timber Country); a stakes winner out of a mare by Miswaki (sire of Umatilla); and a stakes winner out of a mare by Forty Niner, the sire of Distorted Humor. Mares by Fusaichi Pegasus also appeal here. Invincible Spirit and sons have a strong affinity for Halo line mares, the cross having produced Group One winner Yosei out of a mare by Fuji Kiseki, and a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s sire, Sunday Silence (also available in Australia through Tayasu Tsuyoshi and Genuine), and there is also a stakes winners out of a mare Southern Halo, the sire of More Than Ready (himself sire of Sebring).
Halo is a Hail to Reason line horse, and from the Roberto branch of that line, there are three Invincible Spirit line stakes winners out of mares by Kris S. and sons, including a stakes winner out of a mare by Dr Fong. This would suggest daughters of Prized and Brocco, and if they could be found, mares by Arch (whose dam is a close relative to Green Desert, the grandsire of National Defense) and his son, Blame.
The Invincible Spirit cross with mares from the Rainbow Quest branch of Blushing Groom has produced seven stakes winners, including Champion Moonlight Cloud, out of a mare by Spectrum, and two Group One winners out of mares by Rainbow Quest, which suggests trying mares by Quest For Fame and his son, Viscount. There are also two Invincible Spirit line stakes winners out of mares by Pursuit of Love, by Groom Dancer, another son of Blushing Groom, and it could be worth trying the Rahy branch through Fantastic Light.
Invincible Spirit son, I Am Invincible has Group One winner Viddora out of a mare by Colombia, a son of Zabeel, and a brother to Octagonal (sire of Lonhro, himself sire of Pierro and Denman) and Group winner Houtzen out of a mare by Zabeel son, Reset. There is also a Group winner by a Green Desert line stallion out of a mare by Don Eduardo, a three-quarters brother to Octagonal.
There is a trio of stakes winners out of mares from the Warning line, two Group from a mare by Diktat (sire of Dream Ahead) and another from a daughter of Charnwood Forest, both these horses carrying Sadler’s Wells who will be very good here. It may not be an easy strain to find in Australian, but Invincible Spirit and sons have an extremely profitable relationship with Ahonoora line mares, with 10 stakes winners, including five Group winners, one Group One, out of mares by Indian Ridge, and a Group winner out of a mare by Inchinor. We can also note that Invincible Spirit sired I Am Invincible out of a mare by Canny Lad, the sire of Hurricane Sky.

A stakes-winning 2YO on debut at Flemington, READY FOR VICTORY raced in the Golden Slipper at only his second start and was beaten less than 2 lengths. READY FOR VICTORY would be Group placed 4 times as a 3YO, including the Group One Caulfield Guineas, and leading trainer Mick Price said he was a “star in the making”. Based on his outstanding first crop of foals – rising yearlings – he will make his mark, particularly as a son of noted sire of sires in More Than Ready (sire of 185 stakes winners, including Group One Sire, Sebring)

“Thronum was a high class performer, had brilliant speed and was tough. What’s more, he had the ability to lead quality fields and carve out exceptional sectional times.– Hall of Fame trainer , David Hayes
“
“He (Thronum) was a treat to ride and he had a big heart… once getting out in front, he proved hard to run down. That (Group Two) Australia Stakes was a terrific run and he only just got beaten in the (Group One) William Reid, after copping plenty of pressure, with some very good horses behind him.
– Leading jockey, Mark Zahra

Thronum is by Champion Sire and rising sire of sires in SNITZEL , whose success in 2017/18 has been phenomenal with 26 stakes winners and over $28 million in progeny earnings … an Australian record. Snitzel now has over 80 stakes winners of $110 million.
Apart from brilliant speed and being a son of Australia’s best sire in Snitzel, Thronum is also closely related to SHAMARDAL (left) (116 stakes winners) and Winx’s sire, STREET CRY (117 stakes winners).

One of the most exciting entries to the Australian stallion ranks in 2018, THRONUM has the pedigree and performance to succeed. A multiple winner at 2 and stakes winner at 3, Thronum won the Group Two Australia Stakes and also ran 2nd in the Group One William Reid Stakes, beating home Blue Diamond winner, Catchy and other Group One winners She Will Reign , Secret Agenda etc. A son of the all-conquering Snitzel , THRONUM is closely related to leading sires Shamardal (116 SWs) and Street Cry (117 SWs).

From the Northern Dancer line, we can note that Snitzel has outperformed opportunity with mares from the branch of Fairy King – a brother to Sadler’s Wells – getting two Group One winners out of mares by Encosta de Lago (sire of Northern Meteor, Manhattan Rain and Delago Brom) and Group winners out of daughters of Falbrav and Shinko King.
Branches of Sadler’s Wells that have already worked under Snitzel are El Prado (broodmare sire of Snitzel Group One winner Heavenly Blue) and Singspiel (broodmare sire of three Redoute’s Choice line stakes winners), with El Prado being available through Medaglia d’Oro and Artie Schiller. There are two Redoute’s Choice Group winners out of mares by Sadler’s Wells son, Barathea (sire of Tobougg).
Carefully selected daughters of Galileo – either ones that are out of speed mares, or that who themselves had good form at a mile or less – could be interesting as he is a parallel Northern Dancer/Mr. Prospector cross to Thronum. Galileo sons, Teofilo and New Approach might also work. Faster daughters of High Chaparral could likewise be considered.
From the Northern Dancer branch of Nureyev – a three-quarters brother to Fairy King and Sadler’s Wells – Snitzel is sire of the brilliant Russian Revolution out of a mare by Stravinsky (whose dam is a reverse Blushing Groom/Mr. Prospector cross to Carson City, who is in the broodmare sire line of the mare) and Group winner Muraaqeb out of a mare by Starcraft (a son of Soviet Star, and himself sire of Star Witness). There are also Redoute’s Choice line stakes winners out of mares by Peintre Celebre, Fasliyev (a parallel Northern/Mr. Prospector cross to Thronum); Spinning World (sire of Thorn Park), who is from the family of Redoute’s Choice; and Captain Rio (a parallel Northern /Mr. Prospector cross to Thronum).
Topsider is very similarly-bred to Nureyev, Sadler’s Wells and Fairy King, and he appears in the pedigrees of three Snitzel line Group stakes winners, two Group One, including Snitzerland and Group winner Sooboog, who is out of a mare by Topsider son, Fraar. Mares by Topsider grandson, Air Express, might also be considered.
There are two stakes winners by a son of Redoute’s Choice from mares by Perugino – a close relative to Sadler’s Wells, Fairy King and Nureyev – and he and his son, Testa Rossa, might be worth considering.
Snitzel is sire of Group One Wandjina and Group winner Dances On Stars out of mares by Last Tycoon. Sons of Redoute’s Choice have sired four stakes winners out of mares by Last Tycoon son, Iglesia (sire of Written Tycoon). There is also a Group winner out of a mare by Last Tycoon son, O’Reilly.
Snitzel appears to have an extremely strong affinity with mares by General Nediym, getting eight stakes horses, six Group, including Group One winner Sizzling and Group winner Menari.
The broad Redoute’s Choice/Storm Cat cross has been a very successful one, and Snitzel has two stakes winners, one Group, out of mares by Tale of the Cat and a stakes winner out of a mare by All Bar One (by Hennessy, sire of Johannesburg, both broodmare sires of Redoute’s Choice line stakes winners). There are two Group One winners by Redoute’s Choice out of a mare by Catrail. Mares by Giant’s Causeway should do well, and his son Shamardal (sire of Lope de Vega), is not only a parallel Northern Dancer/Mr. Prospector cross to Thronum, but also gives inbreeding to classic winner and outstanding tap-root mare, Helen Street, the granddam of Shamardal, and third dam of Thronum.
A Group Two winning and Group One performing sprinter, Thronum, is by Champion Sire Snitzel, from the immediate family of outstanding stallions Street Cry and Shamardal.

Analysis by Alan Porter of Pedigree Consultants
Snitzel has four stakes winners from the Deputy Minister branch of Northern Dancer, and that includes a Group winner out of a mare by Dehere, and two stakes winners out of mares by French Deputy.
Snitzel has been exceptional with Roberto line mares, getting 11 stakes winners on the cross. The Red Ransom branch has been particularly good, including four stakes winners, three Group out of mares by Red Ransom himself. In addition, Snitzel’s Group One winner Estijaab is out of a mare by Red Ransom son, Charge Forward (whose second dam is by Valid Appeal a three-quarters brother to the third dam of Snitzel), and Red Ransom son, Domesday (from the immediate family of Redoute’s Choice), is broodmare sire of Snitzel Group One winner Trapeze Artist. This cross could also work through All American.
Snitzel has also done well with mares from the Kris S branch of Roberto with Group winner Odyssey Moon out of a mare by Arch (sire of Blame), Group stakes winner Estonian Princess out of a mare by Prized, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Brocco. Snitzel also has Group stakes winner Perignon out of a mare by Narita Brian, a son of Japanese Roberto stallion, Brian’s Time (a close relative to Dynaformer).
Snitzel has outperformed opportunity with the Sir Tristram line with six stakes winners, all at Group level. He has four Group winners from the Zabeel branch, including one out of a mare by Octagonal. Mares by Lonhro should do well, as should daughters of Pierro. It would also be possible to consider daughters of Reset, Don Eduardo and Savabeel, although it would be important to concentrate on faster representatives of these lines. From other branches of Sir Tristram, Snitzel also has Group winners from daughters of Marauding and Hula Town.
Roberto and Sir Tristram are from the Turn-to male line, and, from another branch of that line, Redoute’s Choice and sons have outperformed opportunity with More Than Ready who might also be introduced through Sebring whose broodmare sire, Flying Spur is a parallel Danzig/Mr. Prospector cross to Thronum.
Snitzel has a very strong relationship with Mr. Prospector line mares in general, getting 18 stakes winners on that cross. This includes a stakes winner out of a mare by Street Cry (sire of Street Sense and Street Boss), and this strain would be very interesting here, giving inbreeding to classic winner Helen Street, the dam of Street Cry, and third dam of Thronum. Street Cry is a son of Machiavellian, also sire of No Excuse Needed and Vettori.
Snitzel has done very well with the Woodman branch of Mr. Prospector, getting Group one winner Sweet Idea and Group two winner Showtime out of a mare by Timber Country, stakes winner Bouzy Rouge out of a mare by Bahhare, and Group two winner French Emotion out of a mare by Woodman himself. Woodman is also sire of Hawk Wing, Hector Protector and Woodborough.
Snitzel has enjoyed great success with Gone West line mares, including a Group winner out of a mare by Mr. Greeley, and three stakes winners, one Group, out of mares by Elusive Quality. Among sons of Elusive Quality is Elusive City and Sepoy who both look attractive here being reverse crosses to Thronum. Grand Slam is a Gone West whose dam is bred on a similar cross to Danehill, and is out of a mare by El Gran Senor (who is from the family of Redoute’s Choice). Iffraaj is a Gone West grandson who is a reverse Northern Dancer/Mr. Prospector cross, and is by Zamindar, the sire of Xaar.
From the Gulch branch of Mr. Prospector there are Snitzel stakes winners out of mares by Gulch and Thunder Gulch (who looks a good fit here). There are two Snitzel stakes winners out of mares from the Forty Niner line, out of mares by End Sweep (sire of Trippi) and Gold Fever, and another son, Distorted Humor, would work well, especially as he is very similarly-bred to Fusaichi Pegasus (both reverse crosses to Thronum), another who is broodmare sire of a Snitzel stakes winner. Snitzel has a stakes winner out of a mare by Mr. Prospector grandson, Umatilla, a half-brother to the dam of Redoute’s Choice, and there is also a Group one winner by a son of Redoute’s Choice out of an Umatilla mare. Snitzel also has stakes winners out of mares by Varick and Jade Hunter. Redoute’s Choice has worked with mares from the Unbridled branch of Mr. Prospector, which suggests Unbridled’s Song.
From only six runners out of mares by Success Express and his sons, Snitzel has sired Group one winner Shamus Award and Group one placed Scratch Me Lucky out of a mare by Success Express, and Group winner El Divino out of a mare by Al Akbar.
Verglas stood in Australia, and his granddam is a three-quarters sister to the granddam of Stravinsky, the broodmare sire of Russian Revolution. Verglas is from the Kenmare line, and this has outperformed opportunity under Redoute’s Choice line stallions, including stakes winners out of mares by Kenmare himself, Metal Storm and Keltrice.
