    Hi Brandy

You know Im in England for a year because my parents are working in London. So Im doing my 12th

grade at Horn Park School. But its kind of weird here they call it the Sixth Form. In England, people

can leave school when theyre 16. Many people stay in school longer until they're 18. Ive made

some really good friends and Im having a great time. They're all studying for exams called A levels,

which they take when theyre 17 or 18. But I miss the States. Im really looking forward to going to

Concord College with you next September. There are some great internships. Check out the website.

    Keep in touch.

    Best

In Welcome to Britain, Megan gets help and advice on film-making from David. In the UnitedKingdom, there are many ways to learn how to make films. An organisation called Skillset helps

to provide courses for young people who want to learn about film-making. David took one ofthese courses and here is his description of it.

Because Im still at school, I took courses at the weekend. I went for eightSundays to a studio in central London. They had really good equipment and

great tutors. I had a day each on shooting and directing, lighting, sound, scriptwriting, production management and editing and then on the

last weekend we shot and edited our own film. That was the bestbit for me. We were in small groups and we got a lot of excellent

advice from real film-makers people who make films during theweek and then teach people like me at the weekend. After doing this

course, I have now got enough experience to help Megan.

Shakespeare at the moviesAlthough he died nearly 400 years ago, Shakespeare has provided material for

hundreds of films and television programmes in the last 100 years.

Romeo and Julietis one of Shakespeares most popular plays. In fact, the

famous musical West Side Story was based on this play. In the film, which

won 10 Oscars, Romeo and Juliet became Tony and Maria in rival street gangs

    in New York City.

In 1997, Leonardo di Caprio and Clare Danes starred as the hero and heroine in

the tenth film based on Shakespeares playRomeo and Juliet. This version was

unusual it was a musical directed by the Australian director Baz Luhrmann.

Another popular film, based on a fictional account of Shakespeares life, was

Shakespeare in Love. In 1999, Gwyneth Paltrow won the best actress Oscar for

    her performance in this film.

Altogether, according to Guinness World Records, there are more than 420 films or

TV programmes based on Shakespeares work. So 400 years after his death, he still

has a big influence on what we see.

4 How many computers have there been in your house in the last five years?

5 Have you ever taken a phone for recycling?

6 Have you ever taken a computer for recycling?

Technology changes so fast that many people buy newmobile phones on a frequent basis, every two years

or so. Government statistics in Britain show that 70%of owners change their phone within 18 months. Its

the same with computers most are changed after about three years. So there is a mountain ofuseable, but slightly out of date equipment. What can be done to recycle all these machines?

In the last few years in the UK, several charities have started collecting computers frombusinesses which no longer need them, erasing all data from them, cleaning them up and sending

them to countries in the Third World. One of these charities, Computer Aid International, has sent10,000 PCs a year for the last nine years to schools, colleges, hospitals and clinics in more than

100 countries. In the last four years, another British company, Digital Links, has distributed morethan 70,000 computers in 22 countries across Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. This

has given 1.5 million people their first access to Information Technology.

These are just two examples of how reusing equipment can bring benefits to children and adults

who would not otherwise have the opportunity to use a computer at all.

    Dont throw it away!

Megan reported that London Fashion Week gives a lot ofopportunities to young designers. Well, its certainly true for

Christopher Kane. In 2007, Christophers first professionalcollection was a big success at London Fashion Week.

Christopher was born in Scotland and moved to Londonat the age of 18 to study at Central St Martins College of

Art and Design. For his final college show at the age of 22, he won the important Harrods DesignAward. After this, Christopher was offered a job by Donatella Versace but he declined, saying he

preferred to do his own thing. However, he works for Versace as a consultant.

Many fashion reporters say that Kane is the next big thing in British fashion. His first collectionswere extremely popular both with the public and with celebrities Victoria Beckham went out and

bought one of his dresses when he refused to lend her one. Christophers designs for the HighStreet fashion store Topshop sold out very quickly. The future certainly looks bright for him.

People have celebrated birthdays since 2000 BC, so its a 4,000-year-old tradition. Most people in Europe celebrate by sending cards and giving presents. Many also have

a birthday party for family and friends. They often have birthday cakes, balloons andsometimes special childrens entertainers.

Some birthdays are special your first one is very important to your family, but youprobably wont remember it. Thirteen is important to a lot of young people because they

officially become teenagers and are not children any more. Eighteen and 21 are otherimportant birthdays as you are then an adult in most countries.

After about the age of 30, many people prefer to stop counting the years. Its funny

when youre young, you want to be older, then as you get older, you want to be younger! If you reach your 100th birthday in the United Kingdom, you get a telegram fromthe Queen to congratulate you.

    Happy Birthday!
