Everywhere Jesus went in the course of his public min-istry, he invited people to follow him. This weekend’s gospel reading provides a good example. On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus wanted to enter a Samaritan village to preach the good news about the nearness and power of God’s reign. The Samaritan residents there rejected him because he was headed to the capital city of their bitter rival, the Jews. Two of Jesus’ disciples, James and John, want to retaliate against the Samaritans for their inhospitality, but Jesus rebukes them for advocating vi-olence and he moves on to another village. On the next leg of his journey, Jesus issues his signature invitation to those he met along the way: “Follow me.” Though these folks were attracted to Jesus and his message, they couldn’t quite accept this invitation, because it entailed too much hardship. Their replies were full of “yes…buts,” responses like “yes Lord, but let me go first and bury my father”; and “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home”; “I want to be your disciple, but I have to take care of my farm.” These represent various excuses (some more reasonable than others) people might use to decline Jesus’ invita-tion to join him and his disciples in renouncing earthly status and possessions, and in embracing a life of sim-plicity and poverty, one that proclaims the kingdom of God. The point of this exchange is to demonstrate that nothing should supersede one’s commitment to the gos-pel. Jesus uses this blunt, even shocking language, to teach us a lesson about the demands of discipleship. There are many excuses we can make to decline Jesus’ invitation to follow him. Here is a sample: “I’m too busy”; “That’s too much of a commitment”; “That’s too hard…I don’t think so”; “Nobody else is doing it.” Many Catholics today use excuses why they don’t come to Mass and participate in the life of the Church…like “Mass is boring…I don’t get anything out of it”; “I work hard all week and I want the weekend to myself”; “my kids have soccer or hockey or (fill in the blank with a sport or activity) on Sunday”; “once upon a time somebody in the Church was mean to me”; etc. The truth of the matter is that discipleship requires an “all-in” commitment that includes active participation in the liturgy and the sacraments; a routine of personal prayer; a habit of spiritual reading or study of the faith; service to the community; and promotion of the mission of Christ by witnessing to Christ and inviting others to follow the Lord. May we all make this commitment so that we can accept Jesus’ invitation to “follow me” wherever he may take us!

hosted by Our Lady of the Assumption parishioners on Sunday, July 10 in the SMG Parish Hall after the 10AM Mass. About a month later, we will celebrate the So-lemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (the actual date is August 15) with a reception hosted by SMG parishioners on Sunday, August 14 in the OLA Parish Hall after the 11AM Mass. Thanks to the efforts of Linda Beaver and our Collaborative Justice for Jesus Committee, we will be focusing on the Spiritual Works of Mercy during the remaining months of this Jubilee Year of Mercy. During the month of July, we will high-light the noble work of “forgiving all injuries.” Stay tuned for further details. Blessings to all of you in the summer days ahead!

PASTORAL PLANNINGPASTORAL PLANNINGPASTORAL PLANNINGPASTORAL PLANNING Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeThirteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeThirteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeThirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The second reading begins, “For freedom Christ set us free;” The word freedom or free is mentioned four times in just 146 words of this passage. Not a subtle message. God’s law frees us from the slavery of sin, and Jesus’ death and resurrection sets us free. What do we do with our freedom? Jesus says clearly, “Follow me;” Again, nothing subtle about this message. We, especially those who worship together each week, probably consider ourselves followers of Jesus. But are we disciples? A disciple is a person who prays daily, responds to the call to holiness that is directed to each of us, recognizes the need for Confession, has put Christ at the center of her/his life, serves the Church, and invites and helps others get to know Jesus better. If this seems like a long, demanding list, start by picking one or two practices to focus on. Build your disciple muscles one step at a time.

13131313thththth Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday in Ordinary TimeSunday in Ordinary TimeSunday in Ordinary Time During a final exam, students have an intense focus and concentration of their work. They are oblivious to time or outside noises and are totally lost in the work of the exam. Time flies by without any awareness and so many are surprised when the time is up. If only they could have the same intensity during class! Teachers would love it! Life has many distractions and so many of the good things we intend to do get lost in our “To Do” lists. Time flies by and before you know it, opportunities are missed, new demands on our time come up and we feel overwhelmed by all the things that demand our atten-tion. Setting priorities and managing time becomes more of a chore with each passing year.
Our primary work in life is to love God and love others, especially those closest to us. Making time is essential to marriage and family life. Dinner together, time to talk and time to be together to play, pray and do things is essential. Having a plan—yes, a schedule—for these things does not take anything away from them, but ra-ther guarantees that you will stay focused on each oth-er. Don’t take it for granted. Time will be up before you know it!
