OGP Report 476Recommends changes to Well Control
Training Post-Macondo
5-Level Training Programme
Progressive Training
Role-Specific Training
1- Awareness
Designed for:
Personnel with a non-critical, secondary interest role in well control/well
intervention.
Assessment:
A 4-hour classroom based training course or an interactive online self-
study module of equivalent content to be completed in one year. No
examination required.
Role-Specific Training
2 – Basic/Introductory
Designed for:
All those working in roles which may directly contribute to the creation,
detection or control of a well influx.
Assessment:
A 20-hour introductory classroom course, or as on-the-job mentoring or
an interactive online self-study module of equivalent content to be
completed within one year and to be repeated every five years. To be
verified by a pass or fail examination.
Role-Specific Training
3 – Driller/Operator
Designed for:
Anyone expected to shut-in a well such as Driller, Assistant Driller and
equivalent positions in well services or intervention operations.
A Level 2 course should be successfully completed before taking Level 3.
Assessment:
A minimum 28-hour classroom and simulator based training, not
including examination time, designed for specific operations – drilling or
intervention followed by a pass or fail examination. Valid for two years.
Role-Specific Training
4 – Supervisor
Designed for:
Wellsite supervisory and office based personnel that are primarily
involved with the well design and operational decision making process.
A Level 3 course should be successfully completed before taking Level 4.
Assessment:
A minimum 28-hour classroom and simulator based training, not
including examination time, designed for specific operations – drilling or
intervention. Followed by a pass or fail examination, including practical
assessment on a simulator. Valid for two years.
Role-Specific Training
5 – Well Engineering
Currently under review.
In addition to attending Level 4, all personnel with a key role in well design will
have the option to attend an additional training course. This training should
include an understanding of well design safety margins and potential
weakness.
Current thinking is that Level 5 will be a modular format, with modules covering
both drilling and well intervention topics.
This training level should be verified with a pass/fail examination and once
achieved need not be repeated.
Crew Resource Management (CRM)
CRM will consist of team-based exercises using either a simulator or a test-
well, where actual or created well control incidents can be worked through.
It is expected that this will take place in the intervening year between taking the
Level 3 & 4 course and examination and repeated every two years.
There will be no pass/fail examination but crew members will be observed and
reports written on the individuals’ ability to work under pressure & problem
solve, work in a team and demonstrate leadership skills. Development plans
will be suggested in relation to the observations made.
Competency –
Learning Management System (LMS)
In the long term, the LMS will be the engine that drives Well Control training.
My understanding is that this will be Computer Based Training (CBT) which will
allow candidates to update their well control skills regularly on-line, both at
work and during field breaks.
Candidates will still be required to attend a four-day course (plus one for the
examination) every two years. Rather than a formal syllabus, the content will
be based on resolving individual issues from the on-line material and exploring
additional material like: HPHT, deepwater, kicks while cementing etc.
This will be linked to an individual’s competency profile.
