Petrel2009andPetrel2010. ChangeshavebeenmadeinrelationtothetemplatesthatdescribehowaWellSection

looks,aswellasthelocationofitemsonaWellSection. ThisTIPS&TRICKSshows:1)howtocreatebasic(andnot

sobasic)WellSectionsinPetrel2010,2)wheretheelementsarenowlocated,and3)theuseoftemplatesinthe

newversion.

OneofthebiggestchangesinPetrel2010istheuseoftemplates. Inordertoshowthesechanges,wewillbuild

multipleWellSectionsandadditemstothemby:

Addingwells Changingtheorderofthewells Addinglogs Changingtheorderofthelogsandtracksinthesection Colorfillingbetweenthelogandatrackboundary Placingmultiplelogsinonetrack Colorfillingbetweenthelogsinthetrack AddingWellTops Colorfillingbetweenthetops UseofTemplates(bothPetrelsuppliedandUserdefined)

Creating a Well Section

1. To create a well section, click onWindowNew well section window

2. YouwillthenseeapaneltoSelectnewwellsectiontemplate. Youcancreateanewtemplateoruseapreviouslyexistingtemplate. Ifyouhavecreatedoneormoretemplatesbefore,theyareavailableto

chooseagainorPetrelprovidessomepredefineddefaulttemplates. TemplatesusedinPetrel2009are

convertedandsaved,adoptingthenameofthewellsection,thensequencing1,2,3,etc.

3. ThetemplatesmayalsobefoundnearthebottomoftheTemplatestabinthefolderWellsectiontemplates.Fornow,letschoosetocreateanewtemplateandusethedefaultname(inthiscase;Wellsectiontemplate2).

4. ClickOKandthenewemptyWellSectionappearsinthegraphicsareaandalsoatthebottomoftheWindowstab.

TherearethreemethodsforaddingwellstoaWellSection: ClickingonthewellsintheWellsfolderand Clickingonthewellsina3Dwindow. AddingwellsintheWellSectionSettingsDefinitiondialogusingthehorizontalbluearrow. Highlight

click

the

horizontal

blue

arrow

and

they

are

added

to

the

bottom

of

the

well

list

for

thesection.

Fornow,letsclickonthewellsintheWellsfolder. Wewilllookatanothermethodlater.

1. ExpandtheWellsfolderuntilyoucanseethewells

2. Inthisexample,IclickedonthewellsC1,C2,C3andC7inthatorder. ThewellsappearinthatorderintheWellsection. Also(thefirstchangefromPetrel2009),thewellsappearintheSettingsdialogfortheWellsectionundertheWindowstab. BringuptheSettingsandgototheDefinitiontabandyouwillseethewells.

3. Tobebetterabletoseewherethewellslierelativetoeachother,opena3DwindowanddisplaytheWellsalongwiththeWellsectionfencefromtheWellsectionintheWindowstab.

4. IcanseefromtheWellsectionfencethatabetterorderforthewellswouldbeC7C1C2C3. Tochangetheorder,returntotheWellSectionSettingsDefinitiontab,andhighlighttheC7well. UsetheUp

arrow

on

the

left

to

move

it

to

the

top

of

the

list.

1. Addinglogstoawellsectionisasimpleprocedure. SimplyexpandtheWellsGlobalwelllogsfolderandclickinfrontofalogtoadd. LetsaddtheGamma,PorosityandNetNonnetlogs. Onewellinthesection:

Wehavenowaddedtothetemplatealso. TherearemultiplewaystoopenthetemplateSettings:

2. Bringupthetemplateusingoneoftheabovemethods. IfPetrelasksyoutoUpdatethecurrenttemplate,clickOK. UndertheWellsectiontemplatesettingstab,youcannowseethelogtemplates. Theseshowthetracksinthewellsectioninorder.

3. ChangethetrackordertohavethedepthtrackbetweenthePorosityandNetNonnettracks. DothisbyclickingonAutomatic(Thisshowsthedepthstyle(SSTVD,TVD,TVT,etc.)dependingonwhatthesectionis

in)andusingthedownarrow tothelefttoplaceitinthecorrectposition.

Color-fill the logs

Now,letscolorfillbetweenthelogsandthetrackedge.

1. ClickontheCreate/editcurvefill iconontheFunctionbar2. Clickinalogtrackonthesideofthelogcurveyouwantfilledwithcolor.

Andthetrackisfilledwithcolor. Thecolorcomesfromthetemplatesettingsforthattypeoflog.

3. Also,filltheotherlog. Notethatallthewellsinthesectionhavetheirlogsfilled.

4. Ifyoudontwantthecolortogototheedgeofthetrack,putthecursoratthepointinthecolorfillwhereyouwantthecolortostopandclickagain.

Allofthisinformationaboutlogcolorisstoredinthetemplate.

1. Create another well section by clicking onWindowNew well section window

2. Again,youwillseeapaneltoSelectnewwellsectiontemplate. Oncemore,letscreateanewtemplatecalledinthiscase:Wellsectiontemplate3.

IfyoucheckShowsettings,thetemplatesSettingsdialogopenswhenyouclickOK.3. ClickOKandthenewemptyWellSectionappearsinthegraphicsareaandalsoatthebottomofthe

Windowstab.

wellpathoftheobject. Selectioncanbe

difficultifthewellpathsareverythinorthere

PipewidthlargerunderWellsSettingsStylePathinordertobeabletoaccuratelypickthewells). Asyoupickthewells,you

shouldsee

them

appear

in

the

Wellsectionand

alsohavetheWellsectionfenceappearinthe3Dwindow.

thesection,deleteitfromthesectioninthe

Wehave

generated

two

sections

with

templates

and

experimented

with

Petrel

supplied

templates.

This

is

just

a

sampleofwhatcanbedoneinWellSectionsinPetrel2010. Thegoalherewastoshowsomeofthenewthingsthat

canbedonewithtemplates,sincethestructureanduseofthesetemplatesareoneofthemajordifferences

betweenPetrel2010andpriorversions. Thesechangesmaketemplatesapowerfultoolthatiseasytouse(once

youhavelearnedhow). TheyaresavedtothePetrelprojectjustlikeallotherdataissaved. Templatescanbe

movedfromoneprojecttoanotherusingFileReferenceprojecttoolwhichmakesthemeasytotransferfromoneteammembertoanotherorfromafinishedprojecttoanewone.
