Wellbore Cleanup Tools and Displacement Chemicals

Introduction

Since the first oil well was drilled in the late 19th century, there has been an ongoing battle with debris and residue hindering well completions and production. Debris and residue generated from drilling, milling, and perforating can accumulate within the riser, BOPs, casing and liner strings during the completion of a well. This extraneous material not only has the potential to interfere with the installation and performance of the completion and workover systems, but it can also damage the formation. It is critical to remove all debris and residue in the wellbore and displace the drilling fluid to clean completion brine before the well is completed.

Baker Hughes provides a comprehensive portfolio of products and services for wellbore cleanup and displacement including reliable and effective wellbore cleanup tools and a full range of displacement fluids. With decades of experience in completions, displacement, and wellbore cleanup, Baker Hughes has the engineering capability to design the right solution for your well. Furthermore, we have the global infrastructure to support your operation, and our experienced field personnel perform each wellbore cleanup and displacement job safely and efficiently to reduce completion risk and maximize production for each and every well.

Casing and Liner Cleaning SystemEfficiently remove wellbore debris and displace fluid in one trip

The Baker Hughes casing and liner cleaning and displacement solution performs multiple casing and liner operations in one trip, saving operating time and cost and eliminating risk associated with additional runs. This optimized system can perform cement drilling, liner top dressing, casing and liner cleaning, polished bore receptacle (PBR) polishing, and fluid displacement operations. We recommend combining our mechanical wellbore cleanup (WBCU) system with Baker Hughes fluids and chemicals to enhance system performance.

A typical bottomhole assembly (BHA) for casing and liner cleaning is primarily composed of two subassemblies of tools from the Baker Hughes X-Treme Clean™ portfolio. Depending on well characteristics, tools can be selected from either the Baker Hughes Extended Performance (EP) or Extreme Performance (XP) platforms.

A typical upper assembly includes a wellbore filter, casing brush, downhole magnet, circulation valve, casing scraper, and top dress mill. This upper assembly is used primarily for casing cleaning. The filter validates the cleanliness of the well by filtering any fluid while pulling out of hole. A Baker Hughes downhole magnet removes any ferrous debris from the wellbore and the circulation valve boosts annular flow rates at the liner top. The casing scraper and top dress mill remove tough debris from the casing inside diameter (ID) and dress off the liner top.

A typical lower assembly is primarily for liner cleaning and consists of a casing scraper, downhole magnet, casing brush, PBR mill, and a mill or bit. The scraper and brush remove tough debris and thoroughly clean the casing ID. The PBR mill removes any debris from the PBR extension ID, while the bit on bottom cleans or mills over tight spots and restrictions.

This mechanical WBCU system can be configured with other downhole assemblies to effectively complete cement drilling operations in one trip.

In addition to the mechanical components of the system, Baker Hughes provides world-class displacement chemicals for casing and liner cleaning applications. The MICRO-PRIME™ system is the premier displacement technology offered in the industry. Composed of PRIME™ 100 and PRIME 770 additives, the MICRO-PRIME system is a blend of specially selected surfactants that work synergistically to clean and water-wet all downhole surfaces. BAKER CLEAN™ 5 and BAKER CLEAN 6 systems also work in tandem to provide a clean wellbore and are approved for use in the North Sea. The WELL WASH™ system of products can be used for oil-based mud (OBM), synthetic oil-based mud (SOBM), and water-based mud (WBM) to effectively clean the wellbore before completion operations. Wellbore Cleanup and Displacement Solution for Shallow WaterOptimize completion with high-performance, integrated, one-trip WBCU system

A successful wellbore cleanup (WBCU) and fluid displacement is the first step to an optimum completion. Particularly in an offshore well, debris that is not removed from the wellbore, including from areas such as the blowout preventer (BOP) stack and liner top, can cause problems and operational risks during completion. Baker Hughes provides a comprehensive WBCU and displacement solution, including mechanical tools, fluids, and services.

The Baker Hughes X-Treme Clean™ Extended Performance (EP) WBCU and displacement system for shallow water applications cleans risers, BOPs, casing, and liners. It can also perform liner top dressing, cement drilling, liner-top integrity testing, fluid filtration, and fluid displacement. Field-proven for more than a decade, this system can efficiently and reliably accomplish WBCU, displacement, and a variety of jobs in one trip, saving operating time and cost.

Several tools compose this downhole assembly. Typically these tools are selected from the X-Treme Clean EP platform of WBCU tools. However, tools can also be selected from the Extreme Performance (XP) platform when more challenging conditions are encountered. The clean bore riser brush cleans the inside diameter (ID) of the riser, and the debris is captured in the integrated boot basket. The BOP jet sub increases the fluid velocity and jets the cavities in the BOP stack. Wellbore fluid is filtered in the multitask wellbore filter, which is also used to verify the cleanliness of the fluid. The stabilized, nonrotating Baker Hughes EP ULTRA-CLEAN™ casing scraper removes mud, cement sheath, and any additional scale without damaging the casing ID. The EP ULTRA-CLEAN casing brushes are also stabilized and use nonrotating brushes, and they clean the casing ID to remove scale, rust, mud, and cement residue effectively without causing damage.

The Baker Hughes EP Grabitz™ magnet collects ferrous debris from the wellbore. The J-type circulation swivel or full-function valve boosts the annular velocity of the downhole fluid to effectively remove debris from the wellbore. It is typically run above the liner top where there is a change in casing size.

The Baker Hughes EP ULTRA-CLEAN casing scraper with integrated dress-off mill is used immediately above the liner top, cleaning the casing ID and dressing the liner top. This operation helps the installation of seal assemblies following the WBCU operation. The wellbore test packer or inflow test packer performs a liner top integrity test during the wellbore cleanup and displacement run.

Baker Hughes also provides world-class displacement chemicals to suit every application. The MICRO-PRIME™ system is the premier displacement technology offered in the industry, and is used to clean and displace water-based mud (WBM), oil-based mud (OBM), and synthetic oil-based mud (SOBM). Composed of PRIME™ 100 and PRIME 770 additives, the MICRO-PRIME system uses Baker Hughes proprietary Mesophase microemulsion technology with a blend of specially selected surfactants that work synergistically to clean and water-wet all downhole surfaces. The PRIME 770 additive is solvent-free and is formulated to perform in high density brines. The BAKER CLEAN™ systems—BAKER CLEAN 5 and BAKER CLEAN 6—also work in tandem to provide a clean, water-wet wellbore and are approved for use in the North Sea. The WELL WASH™ system of products can also be used for wellbore cleanup of WBM, OBM, and SOBM in less complex wells before completion operations. DISPLEX™ modeling software can be used to help plan and troubleshoot displacement operations.

Baker Hughes has extensive WBCU and displacement experience globally. Based on your specific well conditions, we design optimum, fit-for-purpose WBCU and displacement programs that deliver flawless performance.

Wellbore Cleanup and Displacement Solution for Deep Water and UltradeepwaterEnsure successful debris removal and displacement operations in extreme conditions

A successful wellbore cleanup (WBCU) and fluid displacement is the first step to an optimum completion. Particularly in an offshore well, debris that is not removed from the wellbore, including areas such as the blowout preventer (BOP) stack and liner top, can cause problems and operational risks during completion. In deepwater and ultradeepwater applications, the risks associated with debris within the wellbore have become even more significant due to the immense costs of operating in these environments. Baker Hughes provides a comprehensive WBCU and displacement solution including mechanical tools, fluids, and services.

The Baker Hughes award-winning X-Treme Clean™ Extreme Performance (XP) one-trip WBCU and displacement system is designed for deepwater and ultradeepwater applications. It includes tools for riser and BOP cleaning, casing and liner cleaning, liner-top dressing, cement drilling, liner-top integrity tests, fluid filtration, and fluid displacement. It can perform all of these operations in a single trip, saving operational time and cost and reducing nonproductive time (NPT).

The X-Treme Clean XP tools feature higher-than-drill-pipe torque and tensile strength, large flow area, and highest allowable rpm ratings for the most effective WBCU in challenging deepwater environments. The XP riser brush and boot basket clean the riser by brushing the inside diameter (ID) and capturing debris in the integrated boot basket. The BOP jet sub increases fluid velocity and jets the cavities in the BOP stack. Wellbore fluid is filtered and debris is collected in the XP multitask wellbore filter. Additionally, the filter can be used as a key point indicator to verify the cleanliness of the wellbore fluid.

The XP casing scraper is nonrotating and is used to remove mud, cement sheath, and any additional scale without damaging the casing ID. The stabilized and nonrotating XP casing brush further cleans the casing ID to remove scale, rust, mud, and cement residue. The XP magnet collects ferrous debris from the wellbore. The circulation valve boosts the annular velocity of the downhole

fluid to effectively assist circulation and displacement in the wellbore. A liner top dress mill and polished bore receptacle (PBR) mill can be used to dress off the liner top and clean the PBR in the same trip. If needed, the wellbore test packer or inflow test packer is used to perform a liner-top integrity test during the WBCU and displacement run. The Advantage™ torque and drag program can be used to simulate the torque and tensile in the bottomhole assembly and drillpipe to ensure a successful operation.

Baker Hughes displacement spacer systems are designed to optimize the WBCU process and minimize waste generation when displacing drilling fluids before the completion process. For deepwater applications, Baker Hughes recommends using the MICRO-PRIME™ or BAKER CLEAN™ displacement systems for these demanding applications.

Our MICRO-PRIME fluid spacer system is advanced detergent technology composed of specially selected surfactant blends designed to maximize the WBCU process. This innovative design uses the Baker Hughes proprietary state-of-the-art Mesophase microemulsion technology to clean and water-wet all oily surfaces, even at high levels of oil- or synthetic-based mud contamination. The MICRO-PRIME system uses a transition weighted spacer designed to efficiently displace water-based mud (WBM), oil-based mud (OBM), or synthetic oil-based mud (SOBM) out of the wellbore while initiating the cleaning process. This is followed by a solids-free, Newtonian brine cleaning spacer to completely remove all oil- and water-wet surfaces.

The BAKER CLEAN displacement system also provides superior performance and is yellow-rated for use in the North Sea. The BAKER CLEAN system uses a multifunction viscosified, solids-free brine cleaning spacer to clean, water-wet, and carry out dispersed solids from the wellbore. MICRO-PRIME and BAKER CLEAN spacer technology, along with our proprietary DISPLEX™ modeling software, allows operators to maximize wellbore cleaning efficiency while reducing risks associated with challenging completion operations.

One-trip BOP and Riser Cleanup SystemReduce risk by efficiently cleaning the riser and jetting the BOP system

The Baker Hughes blowout preventer (BOP) and riser cleanup system performs specific BOP cleaning and debris removal operations that are essential to a clean riser and an efficiently functioning BOP. This operation is necessary because debris lodged in the cavities of the BOP stack can prevent the operator from maintaining well control if a kick is encountered.

The dedicated BOP and riser cleanup system uses a specific configuration of Baker Hughes X-Treme Clean™ wellbore cleanup (WBCU) tools. Depending on well characteristics, tools can be selected from either the Extended Performance (EP) or Extreme Performance (XP) platforms. The system is composed of a riser brush and boot basket, BOP jet sub, downhole magnets, wellbore filter, and a mule shoe or bullnose.

The riser brush is used to clean the riser inside diameter (ID) and collect debris. When the BOP jet sub is used in the string, the BOP cavities can be cleaned to ensure its functionality. The filter or surface junk catcher is included approximately three joints beneath the BOP jet sub to collect any debris removed from the BOP as well as to filter the wellbore fluid. Baker Hughes downhole magnets remove any ferrous debris from the wellbore. Finally, a mule shoe or bullnose is typically run on the bottom to facilitate the stabbing of the string and tools into the BOP and casing.

Contact your Baker Hughes representative or visit www.bakerhughes.com/wbcu to find out how our one-trip BOP and riser cleanup system can help you reduce risk by efficiently cleaning the riser and jetting the BOP system.

One-Trip Wellbore Cleanup and Sandface Completion System for Non-Cemented LinersReduce NPT and completion costs

The Baker Hughes X-Treme Clean™ wellbore cleanup (WBCU) and sandface completion system for non-cemented liners lets you set the lower completion, perform a liner top integrity test, clean the wellbore, and displace drilling fluid to completion fluid in the wellbore in a single trip. Nonproductive time (NPT) is minimized and the cost of a successful completion is lowered because the system reduces the number of trips to clean and complete a well.

Traditionally, two trips are required to clean and complete an openhole non-cemented liner and to perform a sandface completion. In the first trip, the packer setting area is cleaned, the downhole fluid is displaced, and the wellbore fluid is filtered. In the second trip, the sand screen with liner hanger is deployed. In some cases, a trip to perform a liner top integrity test is run after the lower completion is set.

This system is composed of two subsystems. Depending on well characteristics, tools can be selected from either the Extended Performance (EP) or Extreme Performance (XP) platforms.

The WBCU subsystem consists of a downhole magnet, casing scraper, casing brush (optional), wellbore filter, circulation valve, and a wellbore test packer.

The lower completion subsystem run with the WBCU subsystem consists of a Baker Hughes liner hanger, liner hanger setting tool, fluid loss control valve, and standalone screen or slotted pipe.

While running in hole, the WBCU tools act purely as a conduit for deploying the lower completion. At the required depth, the liner hanger is set and the setting tool is released from the liner hanger. Integrity tests are performed. The packer setting area is then cleaned by the nonrotating scraper, minimizing any damage to the casing inner diameter (ID). Fluids can then be circulated and displaced with Baker Hughes completions fluids.

The circulation valve is activated to boost the annular velocity and facilitate circulation above the liner top. When pulling out of hole, the downhole magnets collect metal debris and the wellbore filter removes any solids from the downhole fluid, bringing them to surface.

Contact your Baker Hughes representative or visit www.bakerhughes.com/wbcu to find out how our one-trip WBCU and sand screen completion system for non-cemented liners can help you reduce NPT and completion costs.

VACS Technology for Post-Perforation and Sump Packer CleaningRemove burrs, clean the sump packer, and verify cleanliness in one trip

Combining Baker Hughes field-proven vectored annular cleaning system (VACS™) technology and other wellbore cleanup and fishing tools, this system effectively removes perforation burrs, cleans the sump packer, and verifies the cleanliness of the sump packer in one trip. VACS technology has been ensuring successful cleanup operations and reducing nonproductive time (NPT) since 1993.

Baker Hughes VACS technology is a highly effective tool used to recover objects and debris such as bit cones, bearings, sand, and metal shavings from the wellbore and carry them to the surface. It creates suction force at the tool base when fluid flows through the jet nozzles, pulling in loose debris or junk from the well into the tool basket.

A typical bottomhole assembly (BHA) in a post-perforation sump packer cleaning operation is shown on the left. The BHA may include either the standard VACS debris basket or modular VACS G2 system. In a typical operation, the BHA is run into the hole at a controlled speed, breaking circulation regularly to prevent premature plugging of the tool. When the bottom of the BHA is above the top of the viscous pill or perforation, circulation is broken and working parameters are recorded, including pump pressure, pick-up and slack-off weight, and torque. Pumping begins, slowly washing down and rotating when needed. The assembly is circulated to ensure sufficient hole cleaning and pulled out of the hole, and the magnets and VACS or VACS G2 tool are inspected for debris.

The one-trip deburring, cleaning, and sump packer cleanliness verification capability offers significant savings in time and cost. The VACS wellbore cleanup system is designed to operate and perform with other Baker Hughes wellbore cleanup and fishing tools, offering even more flexibility. And the time involved removing perforation burrs, cleaning sump packers, and verifying the cleanliness of the sump packer is considerably shortened. Using Baker Hughes VACS technology over other cleanup methods ensures that you receive the most reliable and cost-efficient solution for your well.

With the Baker Hughes VACS wellbore cleanup system, you can realize the benefits of quick, effective cleanup operations. Contact your Baker Hughes representative today or visit www.bakerhughes.com/vacs to find out how our VACS technology can help you reduce NPT and achieve maximum production and profit.

VACS Technology for Packer Plug or Bridge Plug Retrieval Retrieve plugs and remove debris from the wellbore in one trip

Baker Hughes vectored annular cleaning system (VACS™) technology is a reliable method to retrieve plugs from the wellbore in the most cost-effective way. It cleans and collects debris on top of the plug and retrieves the plug with the retrieval tool in one trip. The improved flow path through the use of a triple-connection bushing/ported sub/skirt makes this possible.

VACS technology is commonly used to recover objects and debris such as bit cones, slips, hand tools, bearing, sand, and metal shavings from the wellbore and carry them to the surface. It creates suction force at the base of the tool when fluid flows through the jet nozzles, pulling in any loose debris or junk from the well into the tool basket.

A typical bottomhole assembly (BHA) in a packer plug and bridge plug retrieval application is shown on the left. When the retrieval tool is just above the packer plug, circulation ensures hole cleaning while shakers and filtration units are monitored. The plug is released, and the packer plug is pulled out of the hole. The magnets and VACS or VACS G2 tool are inspected for debris.

The one-trip cleaning and retrieving capability offers significant savings in time and cost. It is designed to operate and perform with other Baker Hughes wellbore cleanup and fishing tools, offering even more flexibility. And the time involved—cleaning and retrieving a packer plug or a bridge plug—is considerably shortened. Using Baker Hughes VACS technology over other methods ensures that you receive the most reliable and cost-efficient solution for your well.

With the Baker Hughes VACS wellbore cleanup system, you can realize the benefits of quick, effective cleanup operations. Contact your Baker Hughes representative today or visit www.bakerhughes.com/vacs to find out how our VACS technology can help you achieve maximum production and profit.

Wellbore Cleanup for Whipstock Preparation and Casing Drift SystemEnsure successful deployment of the whipstock to lower risk

The Baker Hughes wellbore cleanup (WBCU) for whipstock preparation and casing drift system cleans the casing inside diameter (ID) at the depth where the anchor is to be set. It identifies and removes tight spots from the casing ID or troublesome areas before whipstock deployment to ensure the whipstock can be deployed to the kickoff point. This clean setting area is essential to ensure a successful setting of the whipstock anchor and minimize completion risk.

This system is composed of a Baker Hughes X-Treme Clean™ downhole magnet, X-Treme Clean casing scraper, flex joint, string mill, and window mill. The downhole magnet is used primarily to remove any ferrous debris from the wellbore. The casing scraper removes tough debris from the casing ID. Tight spots and restrictions are removed by the string mill as it breaks up debris collected on the casing wall. The mill or bit assists those tools in initially removing any tight spots or restrictions and in gauging the casing.

Circulation Control JointProvide simple and reliable circulation solution

The Baker Hughes circulation control joint is a multipurpose tool that provides a means of establishing circulation at a predetermined hydraulic pressure. It can be used as a pump-out, kick, run-in, or drain sub by varying the particular control washer/rupture disc/restriction plug combination.

The standard circulation control joint has an inner bore profile that forms a seat for restriction plugs fitted with a bit nozzle. The control washer and bit nozzle inner diameters (IDs) can be varied to obtain the correct relationship between mud flow and pressure drop to burst the rupture disc and establish the desired flow rate. The circulation port can be resealed at any time by removing the standard restriction plug (short fishneck) and inserting an extended (long fishneck) restriction plug. Both restriction plugs can be recovered with slickline using a restriction plug spear.

ULTRA-CLEAN Casing ScraperClean wellbore with minimum wear to casing ID

The Baker Hughes X-Treme Clean™ EP ULTRA-CLEAN™ nonrotating casing scraper is used to remove mud or cement sheath, rust, mill scale, paraffin, and similar substances from the casing inner diameter (ID). This is especially important in precompletion stages where tight tolerance equipment will be run. These scrapers are also a very effective component of the bottomhole assembly (BHA) when making gauge runs.

XP Multi-Cycle Ball-Activated Circulation Valve Conduct mid-string circulation during drilling and wellbore cleanup

The Baker Hughes X-Treme Clean™ XP multi-cycle ball-activated circulation valve is a hydraulically-activated tool that enables mid-string circulation during wellbore cleanup, fluid displacement, and drilling. The valve can be used in deepwater cased hole displacement and wellbore cleanup to boost annular velocity to improve debris removal and perform blowout preventer cleaning. In drilling operations the valve can be used to clean debris or to spot chemicals or lost circulation material (LCM). Because it is hydraulically activated, the valve is also suitable for scenarios where mechanical operation is not feasible.

In cased hole displacement and wellbore cleanup applications, the circulation valve can be run as part of the complete X-Treme Clean wellbore cleanup system. In drilling applications, the valve is typically run in the bottomhole assembly above under-reamers and measurement while drilling (MWD) tools.

The valve provides three flow modes: to the bit, to the ports only, and flow split through bit and ports. In run-in position, all flow is directed through the bit. Depending on your application, the tool’s secondary flow path can be reconfigured by first dropping the right-sized ball. For example, during drilling operations, if LCM is to be spotted, the tool can be activated to the port open-only position to avoid any flow through the debris-sensitive measurement devices below the circulation valve. If there is a need to boost annular velocity for debris removal, a different-sized ball can be dropped to activate the tool while maintaining a split flow path. In this configuration, some of the fluid will exit the ports while some will continue through the bit.

To operate the valve, a ball is dropped from surface to shift the internal sleeve, opening the ports for circulation. Depending on the size of the ball dropped, the tool’s flow path to the bit will either be closed off or left open. Dropping a second ball returns the internal sleeve to its run-in position, sealing off the ports and allowing circulation through the tools. All balls are stored within the circulation valve in the integrated ball catcher sub, eliminating the need for additional catcher tools to be run in the string.

This tool has multiple cycles and is limited in cycles only by the capacity of the integrated ball catcher sub. The tool also has a full internal flow path that allows smaller balls to be circulated through for activating or deactivating any tools below. Additionally, the circulation valve is designed with high torque and tensile ratings, making it ideal for deepwater and ultra deepwater operations.

XP Downhole MagnetRecover metal debris from wellbore with high-strength magnets

The Baker Hughes X-Treme Clean™ XP downhole magnet for deepwater, deep, and deviated well applications contains high-strength magnets that collect metal from the wellbore fluid and recover it to the surface. It removes ferrous metal debris left in the wellbore such as debris from window cutting, packer milling, or junk milling. It can be used by itself, with blowout preventer jet subs for blowout preventer cleaning, with VACS™ tools for downhole debris collection, or with other casing cleaning tools such as circulation subs, scrapers, brushes, and multi-task wellbore filters for wellbore cleaning and displacement.

The downhole magnet features one-piece mandrel design without any internal connection. The tensile and torque ratings of the tool are higher than those of the tool joint, which allows the tool to be used in deepwater wells, deep wells, or deviated wells in which higher tensile and torque ratings are required.

The high-temperature, high-strength magnets and unique magnet arrangement provide extraordinary metal debris capturing and carrying capability that is many times higher than a conventional tool, even in a high-pressure/high-temperature (HP/HT) well. The design lets metal debris tightly collect in the space between the magnetic bars, which allows adequate circulation area between the tool outside diameter and casing inside diameter. The robust replaceable magnet bars can withstand harsh downhole environments and allow easy assembly, replacement, and tool cleaning.

The stabilizers at both ends of the tool centralize the tool and allow more effective circulation in the deviated wells. Allowing drillpipe to rotate up to 150 rpm could significantly increase cleaning efficiency and would also allow the tool to be used in the drilling or milling applications in which a high rotational speed is required.

The tool also provides large inside diameter and annulus flow areas. It allows more effective circulation and displacement operations.

XP Full-Cycle Ball-Activated BOP Jet SubEnsure BOP cleanliness while maintaining well control

The Baker Hughes X-Treme Clean™ XP full-cycle ball-activated blowout preventer (BOP) jet sub is used to clean the valves in the BOP through high-rate jetting. It can be run with a wide variety of Baker Hughes tools to perform one-trip well cleanup.

The jet sub uses a dual-piston design adapted from the full function valve. The tool is run into the hole in the closed position, allowing circulation through the bottom of the string. After all other necessary operations are completed, a ball is dropped down the drillstring to the lower piston. Additional pump pressure shears the lower piston, allowing circulation through the side ports and nozzles to the annulus. This function allows for effective cleaning of the BOP stack.

After the BOP jetting operation is performed, a second ball can be dropped to shear the upper piston, sealing the circulation ports and directing all flow through the drillstring below. This allows for enhanced well control by allowing the operator to seal off flow to the annulus at any time during operation. Furthermore, a positive lock feature prevents the sleeve from shifting open in case a well kick does occur.

VACS Debris BasketCapture debris downhole in one trip for reduced NPT

The Baker Hughes vectored annular cleaning system (VACS™) debris basket captures debris downhole. It can be used in a variety of applications such as post-perforation sump packer cleaning, one-trip packer milling, and one-trip plug and packer retrieving. VACS technology has an outstanding record of success in saving time and costs through more than a decade of use in wellbore cleanup (WBCU) and fishing operations.

The VACS debris basket consists of a jet bushing, a drive sub, several joints of washpipe, triple-connection bushing, Baker Hughes screen joints and bushing, and a diverter tube and cap. As conventional circulation pushes fluid through the jet nozzles, the VACS system produces a suction pressure at the base of the debris basket. This induced pressure differential pulls any debris from the well into the debris basket.

The VACS debris basket is ideal for keeping small debris from accumulating inside a subsea blowout preventer stack, reaching surface where it can damage rig equipment, or becoming suspended in fluids. The VACS system requires low pump rate, minimizing impact to the formation.

VACS Junk CatcherEffectively recover large junk from the well bottom with high-power system

The Baker Hughes vectored annular cleaning system (VACS™) junk catcher is extremely powerful in large junk or debris retrieval or fishing operations involving bit cones, chains, tools, and other large objects. The field-proven Baker Hughes VACS portfolio has demonstrated reliability through more than a decade of successful operations.

The VACS junk catcher operates on the principle of convective acceleration to recover junk from the well bottom. Fluid exiting the ports of the jet bushing creates suction at the base of the tool, pulling in any loose debris from the well bottom into the debris chamber, where it is held by the tool’s junk catchers. An optional ball-drop feature allows circulation through the tool to clean the top of the fish before reverse circulation is begun.

The VACS junk catcher is placed at the bottom of the workstring. The one-directional finger catcher design ensures that large junk is fully secured in the tool until disassembly. The junk catcher can be used with other Baker Hughes tools such as magnets and circulation subs to enhance operations in fishing and wellbore cleanup applications. It requires low pump rate, minimizing impact to the formation.

Contact your Baker Hughes representative or visit www.bakerhughes.com/wbcu to find out how our high-power VACS junk catcher can help you effectively recover large junk from the well bottom.

PRIME 770 Displacement Chemical

MPA-50 Performance Activator

MPA-100 Performance Activator

The MICRO-PRIME™ system is a high-efficiency displacement system designed to improve cleaning effectiveness, especially in deepwater wells drilled with synthetic-based mud. This system is a proprietary surfactant blend and contains no organic solvents. Unlike conventional solvent-based products, the MICRO-PRIME system has the ability to “solubilize” oil to the extent that the oil and the water-based spacer co-exist as a single phase, which results in highly efficient cleaning and water-wetting of the casing/riser surfaces.

Wellbore Cleanup Tools and Displacement Chemicals

MICRO-PRIME High-Efficiency Displacement and Cleanup Chemicals

Section 7

PRIME 100 Displacement ChemicalRemove synthetic and oil-based residue from wellbore surfaces

The PRIME™ 100 proprietary surfactant blend is used as part of the Baker Hughes MICRO-PRIME™ displacement system to clean synthetic- or oil-based mud residue from downhole surfaces while leaving them in a water-wet state. The following is a standard sequence of a MICRO-PRIME displacement train: 1. Base oil spacer (optional); 2. PRIME 100 weighted/unweighted viscosified transition spacer; 3. PRIME 770 solids free cleaning spacer; 4. Viscosified tail spacer; 5. Clear completion brine.

PRIME 100 surfactant is added to either a weighted or unweighted viscosified transition pill based in fresh water. This transition spacer is viscosified with one of the biopolymers in the Baker Hughes XANPLEX™ family of viscosifiers, and serves as the push pill when displacing invert emulsion fluid systems from a cased wellbore and riser. To create a weighted transition pill, barite should be added to achieve the correct density rather than using a soluble salt.

The PRIME 100 viscosified transition spacer initiates the cleaning and water wetting process during invert emulsion drilling fluid displacements. As part of a completely formulated transition pill, the PRIME 100 spacer is rheologically compatible with base-oil spacers that may precede the pill, and synthetic- or oil-based drilling fluids being displaced. Despite a high concentration of barite in some formulations, the PRIME 100 viscosified transition spacer removes >95% of the oily debris from casing and risers at both low and elevated temperatures. The subsequent PRIME 770 solids free cleaning spacer finalizes the cleaning and water wetting process.

Recommended TreatmentThe applied concentration for PRIME 100 surfactant blend in a weighted or unweighted viscosified transition push pill depends on the type of invert emulsion system being displaced. A concentration ranging between 8% and 10% by volume is typically required for synthetic-based drilling fluid displacements. However, when displacing oil- or mineral-based drilling fluids, the recommended field concentrations of the PRIME 100 surfactant blend in the viscosified transition spacer is between 4% and 6% by volume. As with most oilfield applications, laboratory testing is recommended to more closely identify the treatment level.

It is recommended to use these displacement chemicals in combination with the Baker Hughes mechanical WBCU system to enhance cleaning performance.

PRIME 770 Displacement ChemicalRemove synthetic and oil-based mud residue from wellbore surfaces

The PRIME™ 770 proprietary surfactant blend is used as part of the Baker Hughes MICRO-PRIME™ displacement system to remove residual debris during the displacement of invert emulsion systems from casing and risers while leaving them in a water-wet state. The following is a standard sequence of a MICRO-PRIME displacement train: 1. Base oil spacer (optional); 2. PRIME 100 weighted/unweighted viscosified transition spacer; 3. PRIME 770 solids free cleaning spacer; 4. Viscosified tail spacer; 5. Clear completion brine.

The PRIME 770 cleaning spacer system is primarily used as the Newtonian cleaning and wetting fluid during invert emulsion drilling fluid displacements. This cleaning spacer should be preceded by the PRIME 100 viscosified transition spacer and followed by a viscous tail spacer based in brine. The PRIME 100 spacer initiates the cleaning process while the viscous tail spacer carries any remaining dislodged debris to the surface. The PRIME 770 solids free cleaning spacer is pumped in turbulent flow to clean any residual oily debris not removed by the preceding PRIME 100 viscosified transition pill. Additionally, this cleaning spacer will complete the water wetting process of downhole surfaces.

Recommended TreatmentThe field concentration for the PRIME 770 surfactant blend in a MICRO-PRIME solids free cleaning spacer depends on the type of invert emulsion system being displaced. A typical treatment concentration of the PRIME 770 surfactant blend into a brine is 10% by volume.

It is recommended to use these displacement chemicals in combination with the Baker Hughes mechanical WBCU system to enhance cleaning performance.

DISPLEX is also an excellent planning tool that assists in managing rig time, selecting pill volumes, minimizing spacer interfacing, controlling filtration costs, and delivering cleaner wellbores in open-hole completions.

Proprietary DISPLEX software works by modeling the displacement of drilling and completion fluids. These

simulations identify potential problems during a well’s planning phase, providing the completion fluid

engineer with a convenient tool to make appropriate modifications before pumping starts. Capabilities

include:

Determining fluid displacement flow dynamics in 3D wells Visualizing survey data and 3D well paths Importing survey data from text (ASCII) or PDF files Modeling forward or reverse circulation Provides time and pressure report of all fluids and spacers during displacement Calculating free-fall and back-filling (U-tubing) Deepwater capabilities that allow for choke, kill, and boost line in the displacement Performing circulation sub and flow bypass simulations Calculating equivalent circulating density and pressures at various depths versus time Projecting pipe eccentricities Creating cleanup tool visualizations Visualizing fluid displacement/flow-patterns

Applications High-rate, high-productivity wells All deepwater projects Open-hole applications
